The rapper, whose new song Anaconda is a testament to the tuchus, was a special guest at the Alexander Wang show and helped pump up the models backstage before the designer unveiled his spring/summer 2015 collection.

Vogue was on hand to film Minaj as she conducted a twerking tutorial with four models. The videos, which aerobics queen Jane Fonda herself would be proud of, show the singer, wearing new season Wang – whose label she cites in the song – instructing the women how to shake, straddle and squat like she does in the film clip for her new single which continues to top the charts around the world.

While locally the ditty is sitting pretty at number eight on the ARIA charts, the accompanying music video has been viewed more than 140 million times on YouTube in less than four weeks. Anaconda samples 1992's booty praising tune Baby Got Back by Sir Mix-a-Lot and includes the lyrics, "He could tell I was missing no meals. He like my sex appeal, he don't like 'em bony he like something he can grab".

Needless to the say the leggy and lithe models, seemingly lacking Minaj's core strength, struggled to master the moves. According to fashion media in the US, the impromptu dance lesson at New York Fashion Week is the best representation of the song's decree: "This one is for my b--ches with a fat a--".

Miley Cyrus also got into the swing of things at the Wang after party and showed how her hip flexors opened by twerking, albeit topless, with guests. Some attendees were not impressed, including Paris Hilton.

"She [Minaj] is the queen twerker. I have never twerked in my life, so if I were to learn from anyone it would be from her," Hilton said.

Outspoken fashion blogger Bryan Boy was more concerned with models being made to work out.

"One of the models was so thin she couldn't even carry her Balenciaga heels. I mean, she couldn't even lift her shoe," he told New York Magazine of the videos.
