It was a departure from his usual formal attire of shorts and suit jacket, plus he also downsized his trademark wide-brimmed Vivienne Westwood hat to a khaki paper boy cap. He was accompanied by his wife Helen Lasichanh who looked similarly casual wearing a leather jacket over a dress that resembled a table cloth from a CWA meeting.
Kanye West, who presented the Happy singer with his trophy which is, according to the CFDA, "given to an individual whose style has made a significant impact on popular culture on an international stage", also wore denim to the black tie, red carpet affair and was unusually chipper, offering photographers a smile and even threw the peace sign.
His wife Kim Kardashian, who presented the Eugenia Sheppard Media Award to Instagram, showed off her pregnancy style in a sheer black dress punctured with eyelets and decorated with feathers by Proenza Schouler.
Unlike Rihanna at last year's event when she wore a nude slip made from more than 200,000 Swarovski crystals, Kardashian wore full briefs under her custom-made gown.
Designer Jack McCollough said he was made aware the reality star was pregnant at her first fittings several weeks ago and told Style.com she is "not showing yet".
The presenter of the night, new host of The Late Late Show James Corden won many fans by skewering controversial photographer Terry Richardson, Williams and Kimye.
"Asking me to host the CFDAs is like asking Terry Richardson to host your daughter's birthday party," the British comedian told the fashionable crowd which included Vogue editor Anna Wintour, CFDA president and designer Diane von Furstenberg and "white gay men from all different areas of Manhattan".
"Kim and Kanye are both presenting this evening. I should warn you that Kanye is going to interrupt both speeches to say that Beyonce should have won both of them.
"I mean, Pharrell, dude, you can literally wear anything and make it cool. Pharrell has basically spent the last year looking like Abraham Lincoln joined Run-DMC and still looked amazing. You're just cool. You're the absolute coolest. You make everyone around you cool. You even did what we thought was impossible – you made Robin Thicke cool for a summer."
