Hamilton Island launches summer fashion

Collette Dinnigan's new collection is inspired by an imagined 70s Malibu.

It doesn’t get much better than this: sunset on the beach at Qualia Resort on Hamilton Island. No wind, pink sky, oysters plucked from the nearby ocean served with fresh limes, ice cold flutes of champagne... this was the postcard perfect backdrop for Collette Dinnigan’s Resort 2013 Collection show that headlined Audi Hamilton Island Race Week this weekend.

Titled “Malibu Sunsets” the collection was inspired by the glamourous travel set of the 1970s. Full of sorbet coloured dresses in lace, pearl beading and satin with touches of white and abstract print day wear. “I imagined this is what ladies might have worn beach side in St. Tropez or Malibu," said the designer. "Lots of lovely, frothy, floaty colour.”

Stand-outs were - a floor-length raspberry lace gown, white tiered sundress, one-shouldered pistachio cocktail frock and an almost retro colour-blocked pastel shift.

“This is the sixth time I’ve shown as part of the Audi Hamilton Island Race Week program [Dinnigan has been an Audi ambassador for fourteen years]. The location suits the ethos of Cruise perfectly - relaxed, warm and luxurious.” Resort is an important commercial season for Dinnigan because it allows her to straddle the lucrative holiday market - swimwear, cover-ups, sun frocks - alongside gowns that have made her a red carpet favourite.

Models of the moment Montana Cox and Nicole Bollard showcased print bikinis and structured one piece swimwear from the designers diffusion line CD. “It’s an affordable extension of the brand and gives consumers a great entry point opportunity. I've always shown some swim but this is a much broader undertaking with lots of style options." What does Dinnigan wear to the beach herself?

"Bikini. Definitely. Always”

Two and half months away from the birth of her second child Collette hasn’t showed any signs of slowing down launching an e-commerce platform last week. "It's been a huge job...it was such a necessary progression and vital for our international customers. Now I can see who is buying what and from where - I didn't realise I had customers in Afghanistan".

  • Nice, but the models look like they could do with a good feed...

    • I think the models look quite healthy, especially when you compare them to their gaunt looking European counterparts.

    • Seriously? I know the camera adds a few pounds so they're probably skinnier than they look here but judging just on these photos they look like perfectly fine slim women, even a little larger than I would have expected for models. What is happening to our perceptions of weight when people at a slim healthy weight are told they need "a good feed"?

  • Here we go again with attacking the models - just someone always has to make a quick judgement over photos of people they have never met before....

But i agree with SingaporeSling - i think the models looks slim, healthy and fit.

        • The first model featured in the photographs is Montana, the most recent winner of Australia's Next Top Model. She is very slim but not skeletal (very similar in build to Miranda Kerr). From memory she is a size 8 - which means that her BMI is probably slightly lower than the recommended health range, but for the modelling world, this is healthy.
