The week in fashion

The Good

Malin Akerman looked off-the-chain fabulous in this Cushnie et Ochs column gown. Perfect fire engine red, right amount of skin, right amount of sass and look at the accessories ... not a foot out of place. Top marks.

Jamie King looked like Grace Kelly in this one-shouldered, lace cocktail frock. Her look is all about elegance - sleek hair, sparkly clutch and please take notes on the shoes - this is the shape and the colour you wear with red. Jamie has managed to make this very retro silhouette modern.

The Bad

Is that a pair of vanilla-malted stockings I can see? This outfit has no redeeming features. It starts with the hair- a case of dip-dye gone wrong. Then there's the dress - cut, print and fit - a trifecta fail. Tights from her Nanna and iced with a pair of two-tone Mary Jane's. How did this happen Amy Heidemann? How?

Stop. Hammer time. Jenna Elfman is channeling the ghost of 1984 in this polka-dot meets brocade on a picnic in the Sahara smock. The shoes don't match the dress, the bag doesn't match anything - she looks like she raided the lost property bin at the local library.

The Post-Baby Bodies

Pink is awesome. I love that she looked like a real woman during her pregnancy and then took a year to look like her superstar self again. The punk chic of this body-con dress is totally cool - like its wearer - as is the ladylike version of her eponymous pink crop cut.

She had Baby Number Three just five months ago and she's back on the red carpet. Jennifer Garner has a realness about her style that is effortless and lovely. Top marks for use of post-baby draping and jersey.

The Art Installation

Just because you're dating an Olympic swimmer doesn't mean you're required to dress in theme. Model Annabeth Murphy-Thomas went to an Olympics party in London this week on the arm of boyfriend (Olympian) Ryan Lochte wearing a dress made out of left over swimsuits. She kept the aquatic theme going with a fish braid. Didn't work Annabeth. Didn't work.

  • Please, please stop using the expression "real woman". It's hypocritical and prejudicial.

    • Oh Dear. Style Files - you have two of these completely wrong; one of whom is beyond reproach and the other is successfully morphing into her early-career anti-thesis.
I do agree that the first two ladies, whoever they are, look lovely.

      • You are aware that fashion is a matter of TASTE, yes? Like music, art, entertainment and anything else without a practical function? I for one find the 'Art Installation' absolutely brilliant and think that see-through dress up there looks trashy. So what makes your personal tastes worth publishing compared to anyone else's?

        • Interesting interpretation of "right amount of skin" for the first one! Lots of boobage there!

          • Agree - I don't want to see the underside of a boob poking out of a dress ever!

          • Actually, I quite like Amy's shoes. But not the dress or hair. And Malin is showing a lot of inside boob - from the angle of that first shot, anyway.

            • What do you mean "Didn't work Annabeth" I think she looks stunning, amazing dress and at least a a little different. The hair goes beautifully. Very colourful and stylish and she was the stand out by far. So there you go, I wholeheartedly agree with GYoung, it's a matter of taste and just because you write for a fashion column, doesn't mean your taste is superior!

              • Me too! I love the swimsuit dress, it was gorgeous, elegantly-cut, artistic and eye-catching and I thought the hair looked great. Then again, as everyone has been pointing out, it's just a matter of opinion...

            • What comprises a "real woman", Paula? I'm sick of the media perpetuating harmful stereotypes about women. Which women aren't "real", just for the record? Those under or above a certain size? How elitist.

In what I assume is your attempt to appease women with that kind of terminology, you've actually insulted them.
