It appears Julie Bishop can not only handle Putin but she is proving to be fashion's best diplomat.

Back in May Bishop attended the inaugural Fashion Forum in Canberra with members of the Australian Fashion Chamber – the industry's advocacy body headed up by Vogue Australia editor Edwina McCann and Harper's Bazaar boss Kellie Hush. The focus, according to insiders, was on international trade. The heavyweights talked, Bishop listened.

Now in a joint partnership between the US Consul-General, G'Day USA and Los Angeles Fashion Week, Australian label Zhivago will make its international debut in front of a plethora of editors, stylists, celebrities and buyers at the inaugural LA Fashion Week in October.

The label, founded in 2011 by Perth-based designers Lara Kovacevich and Lydia Tsvetnenko who is the wife of millionaire IT entrepreneur Zhenya, is becoming hot property in Hollywood. The sexy and structured gowns are favourites of Kylie and Kendall Jenner and former E! host Giuliana Rancic, but the chance to showcase their wares at a fashion week (for free) is the cherry on top for this burgeoning label – an Aussie combination of Versace and Balmain.

"We feel like we've been fast-tracked but this a dream come true. Zhivago is essentially all about the LA rock chick, this will be our 10th collection that we'll show and we can't believe it as we're still essentially a team of three," Kovacevich said as the pair pinned and sewed the collection in their Perth headquarters, not too far from Bishop's Curtin electorate.

The LA showcase will coincide with the brand launching on Nasty Gal – a US-owned e-store specialising in fashion not for the faint-hearted. "We didn't take the safe approach. We've got a bold style but all the sequins, jersey, draping and our trademark shoulder pads have paid off, the US is quickly becoming our biggest market," Tsvetnenko, who is nine months pregnant, said.

LAFW will showcase designers from 13 countries and fashion director Kim Krempien, who was introduced to the label via the teams at the Australian Consulate and G'Day USA, feels Zhivago will be a highlight: "Their brand story and unique aesthetic vision are a perfect fit for the LA market. Californians are very receptive to Australian brands due to the similarities in culture and climate."

Australian Consul-General Karen Lanyon is looking forward to welcoming the ladies – as well as Tsvetnenko's five-week old baby – to the City of Angels.

"G'Day USA is thrilled to be partnering with Los Angeles Fashion Week for the first time. California is the world's eighth largest economy and LA is a hub for innovation and design. LAFW is a perfect opportunity to showcase and promote the very best of Australia's fashion and creative talents to the influential US market. In 2014 alone, Australia's textile, clothing and footwear exports to the US totalled over $50 million, making it the second largest export market for Australian fashion."

In return for her behind-the-scenes support the designers would relish the opportunity to create a look for Bishop.

"We'll keep it G-rated, but she's so fierce she would rock a shoulder pad like no other. She's welcome to join us as we celebrate in Vegas after the show."

If her clique of model mates is considered to be the Rolling Stones of fashion, Joan Smalls is the Charlie Watts.

Compared to the extroverted Cara Delevingne and Hollywood spawn Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid, she is the quiet achiever of the "Instagirls" phenomenon – a title bestowed by Vogue when she appeared on the coveted September issue last year with Delevingne, Karlie Kloss and other up and comers.

Now Smalls – one of the biggest supermodels not known to many outside of the US – is heading to Sydney next week for David Jones. The 27-year-old model, the first Latina face of Estee Lauder and a Victoria's Secret regular, will appear on the catwalk to launch the retailer's new international label, Studio.W.

Smalls successfully straddles the high and high-street fashion worlds. As well as being the face of the Studio.W she is usually seen strutting for Balmain, Givenchy, Gucci and Alexander Wang.

Prior to her Australian visit she popped into Fiji with her entrepreneur boyfriend Bernard Smith to soak up the sun on a private island. Instead of photos of vistas she posted several nude shots for her 1.1 million fans on Instagram. "This is how we do it Down Under," she wrote.

The Myer spring-summer launch had all the makings for an episode of Dynasty this week.

Wet-gel hair, temper tantrums and beautiful people preening and pouting – and that was off the catwalk.

While the 60 models showcased what could have been 200 edited looks from Alexis Carrington's wardrobe, the place to be was at the Billecart-Salmon-infused reception or a part of cosmetics king Napoleon Perdis' shiny, peacocking posse.

Meanwhile on the red carpet former Home & Away star Tessa James made her first public appearance since battling Hodgkin's lymphoma, "It's a hard thing for a woman to lose her hair, after treatment [chemotherapy] you still have the effects. I've got to rock what I've got," she said.

Myer ambassador Jennifer Hawkins was ever the professional despite her mum undergoing surgery for kidney cancer just hours before the show.

"She is incredible, I've got an incredible family and we all banded together," Hawkins said. "She is going to be fine, we are positive. I'm looking forward to getting back to be with her, with Jake after the show," she said.

Meanwhile a less dignified display was presented by Wayne Cooper who wasn't too pleased with his front-row seat along the 100-metre runway. The designer stormed up to Myer's deputy chief executive Daniel Bracken soon after the finale to complain he, like those around him, didn't see majority of the show.

"Why didn't the models come up this way?" he was overheard asking as Bracken led him back to the complimentary bar.

Iggy Azalea, the girl from Mullumbimby, hasn't returned home since she supported Beyonce in 2013, but her love of comfy undies will entice her back to Sydney next week.

However there won't be any time to have her "two feet in the red dirt" on this visit. As the face and body of Bonds, Azalea will headline a star-studded lunchtime soiree at Cafe Sydney to commemorate the iconic underwear brand's 100th anniversary with Hamish Blake, Andy Lee and fellow ambassador Pat Rafter. "Friends of the brand" Samara Weaving and Isabelle Cornish will be heading along also. She'll then head out to Miranda to meet and greet fans.

A lot has changed since her days of being in the "sugar cane" or "back lane" – as well as a new nose (surgery she admitted to in a recent interview with Seventeen magazine), she's won a swag of awards and landed a fiancé.

The 25-year-old is set to marry her beau Nick Young, the star shooting guard for the Los Angeles Lakers.

Young proposed to the rapper during his 30th birthday party earlier this year with a 10.43-carat, cushion-cut diamond, which is approximately the size of Tasmania.

Channelling sturdier versions of Jay Gatsby, the stars of the gentleman's game looked at ease in the front of the camera wearing 100 per cent wool suits – the Wallabies formal attire – and the team's downtime style staple – cotton ankle-grazing chinos. It's nice every now and then to go to a "fashion function" to celebrate comfy clothing like jeans and hoodies over a few Asahi frothies and good tunes, which is exactly what jeans and hoodies Mecca Superdry did in Bondi this week.

Together with Miss World Erin Holland and former Celebrity Apprentice star Nathan Jolliffe, the British brand – specialising in Japanese denim with an Americana feel – opened its 10th Australian store at Westfield Bondi Junction.

The highlight? The entertainment provided by Flight Facilities who are fresh off the back of successful sets at muddy musical festivals including Glastonbury and Falls Festival.
