For someone with more than 161.8 million fans on social media, not including those who subscribe to her Snapchat account, her pay-walled website and pay $4.49 per month for her app, it seems she has just as many haters if the online commentary is to be believed.

After details of her ordeal emerged, the sound of commentators on social media got louder, angrier and coated in schadenfreude not seen since the last Liberal party leadership spill.

Many called it a publicity stunt co-ordinated by the attention-seeking star, while others, more disturbingly, wished the two masked men dressed as police who stormed her hotel room had killed the 35-year-old mother of two and saved "humanity from mediocrity".

Whatever you think of her, the woman who got her break organising Paris Hilton's closet and later via a sex tape, she's now one of the world's biggest disruptors, shaking up enterprises - enterprises entrenched in sexism - like technology, television and fashion.

Showing off her life, her body and her family is at the core of her business.

She plays up to the patriarchy by commodifying her sexuality despite being torn to shreds by it. For every legitimate fan there are pockets of haters who would equally hate the industries she has successfully infiltrated and revolutionised.

Last financial year was her most successful to date. Thanks to TV royalties, endorsement deals and gaming she pocketed more than $67 million in gross earnings, according to Forbes.

Television executives would appreciate just one season of her Keeping Up With The Kardashians success.

To put the series into perspective, Seinfeld was wrapped up after nine seasons, The West Wing ran out of steam after seven and Sex and the City made only six, but the fly-on-the-wall show that documents Kardashian family life has been running for 12 seasons. Even in this era of streaming and on-demand viewing, it is still a ratings winner around the world and has spawned more than five spin-offs.

Upon the release of her Kim Kardashian: Hollywood! game she became known as a unicorn of the male dominated world of Silicon Valley. The interactive product generated more than $96 million in profits in six months following its release in June 2014.

Prior to that she landed the cover of Vogue after she charmed hard-nosed editor Anna Wintour, who went from calling Kardashian West and her husband, rapper Kanye West, "deeply distasteful" to the "#worldsmosttalkedaboutcouple" in her corresponding editor's letter.

Despite many outspoken critics, including Buffy star Sarah Michelle Gellar who tweeted that she was cancelling her subscription (something she refused to comment on when pressed in 2014), the issue fronted by the couple was one of the most commercially successful for the fashion magazine, selling more than 500,000 copies. It reportedly outperformed those featuring Beyonce and First Lady Michelle Obama by about 150,000.

Two years later and Kardashian West continues to be a democratising and profit-generating force within the insular fashion world.

Not only is she not a size zero, white woman but she also provides visibility to countless designers, including some of the revolutionary characters such as Givenchy's Riccardo Tisci and Balmain's Olivier Rousteing.

Most recently, during her ill-fated trip to Paris Fashion Week, she garnered headlines around the world after attending Demna Gvaslia's show for Balenciaga wearing little make-up and nothing but a trench coat and thigh high boots from the new collection. She previously wore a silver version which subsequently sold out on Net-A-Porter within days of her strutting the streets of New York wearing them with a sheer Maison Margiela slip dress.

This week's show was only Gvaslia's second for the house, the same designer who made the DHL logo T-shirt cool and cast "interesting characters" instead of models for his earlier work, and it made the news thanks, in part, to Kardashian West's presence.

With her voluptuous body, which she has used on many occasions to "break the internet", she has blurred fashion's definition of beauty, albeit curated beauty.

While plastic surgeons say she is responsible for the increase in requests for butt augmentation surgery and cartographers get riled up about her hijacking the term "contouring", the trickle-down effect of her persona is seeing the use of more realistic-sized models being championed by designers from high-end Christian Siriano to high-street J Crew.

Paris Fashion Week - regarded as the most important event on the fashion calendar - was long overdue for a shake up and that's exactly what she did with her skimpy dresses and ugly shoes before her abrupt departure following the break in.

She may have got a shock in Paris but the shocking truth is if you look beyond her butterfly filter there's something to admire.
