While grey was the colour of the day with many opting for monochromatic column dresses, others oozed elegance in jewel tones and shiny embellishments, here are the best and worst looks from the red carpet:

The Damages star illuminated the red rug in a white Elie Saab jumpsuit teamed with an Anna Wintour inspired bob hairstyle. Her alabaster glow and peaches’n’cream complexion were the perfect (and only) accessories needed for the all in one look.

Ange was back to her red carpet, smouldering best in a sexy Jenny Packham gown. A look we haven’t seen since her Billy Bob-vial of blood necklace wearing days which has now been replaced with vintage jewels, a fresh blow wave and a Louis Vuitton handbag in one hand and a Balenciaga clad Brad Pitt in the other.

The My Week With Marilyn star combined her quirky personal style with Valentino red to add some much needed colour to the awards ceremony. The lace capped sleeves, asymmetrical hem and her pixie crop packed a quirky punch as she made her way into the Shrine Auditorium.

The Oscar-nominated fashion lover was a bolt from the blue in a custom fit Calvin Klein column dress with eye popping bustier. Channelling Veronica Lake with her strawberry blonde tresses The Help starlet was beaming thanks to a smattering of sapphire jewels.

Blunt looked fresh, fun and flirty in a chiffon Oscar de la Renta gown. While the thigh-high split was a popular look, Mrs John Krasinski struck the perfect balance between bold and beautiful with a soft up-do and peachy pout.

Heather Morris
The Glee star must has taken style advice from her ex-boss Britney Spears and decided that a leather trimmed gown with sheer train was appropriate for an awards ceremony. The attempt at body con chic missed the mark thanks to a curly mullet ‘do and silver python peep toes.
Ashlee Simpson
Missing your formal dress from 1999? Ms Simpson wore it to accompany her new beau Boardwalk Empire star Vincent Piazza. The actress, last seen in the remake of Melrose Place, looked like a deer caught in the headlights of the paparazzi in her jewel encrusted, ill fitting Jenny Packham gown which she teamed with gothic inspired jewels and a sheer pashmina type sheath across her shoulders.
Busy Phillips
The Cougar Town star looked like she’d come straight from the beach in her Simone by Katie Nehra kaftan/dress/tent. While her BFF Michelle Williams went for chic, the comedian opted for casual - not even smart casual. While her California blonde locks shone, the side braid and boho accessories looked out of place at a major awards show.
Kristen Wiig
While it hurts to put the Bridesmaids star on the drab list, she hurt the eyes of millions by teaming a Fred Leighton choker with her Balenciaga gown. From the collar bone down she looked what an award winner should – chic with curves in all the right places but that crime against statement neckpieces should have been left at home or in the Beverly Hills 90210 wardrobe department.

Was her dress a victim of Dexter? The slashed lace or crochet look over a nude slip is better suited to dinner than a serious awards ceremony. The shape does nothing to soften the actress’s athletic frame and the patent mushroom pumps command too much attention.
