I always like reading stories about people who have worked hard to get where they are, and today’s cover girl, Sarah Harris, sounds like she’s done just that. Raised by a single mother in Mt Druitt, she attended a school surrounded by barbed wire. In year 10 she was doing work experience at Channel Seven and showed a bit of chutzpah and ended up in the newsroom. And that’s what sets her apart from some of the dolly birds on the television. Her chutzpah. She’s got an opinion and she’s not afraid to let people know what it is. She’s happy to stand up for what she believes in and for people she cares about. Good on her.
And then Jil Hogan talks to funnyman Dave Hughes – does he classify as a man-child? – and more homes on display for Solar House Day and Jamie Durie too.
Enjoy.
1. A TIME OF HEROES
John Ellicott’s book Uncommon Heroes is a nostalgic look at a time when rugby league was played on a Saturday afternoon, the players had jobs, the game was a bruising battle and muddy grounds were packed to the rafters with loyal fans. If you, too, are left wondering what’s wrong with it all sometimes you’ll enjoy this look back. Uncommon Heroes: The hard men and raw talent that built rugby league, by John Ellicott. (Hardie Grant, $29.95.)
