“We met at a time when we were both not looking for anyone,” says Zoe. Both John and Zoe were grieving for Andrew – John’s brother and Zoe’s best friend from work – who had died in a motorcycle accident. They met at his wake. “We met only for the first time then and when we met we had a hug. It was the most beautifulest hug and kindest feeling, one that whispered 'everything’s going to be ok',” she says. After the wake Zoe asked if John wanted to come out with her and her twin sister to take his mind off things and they haven’t looked back. “Since we have been together it has been so natural and not one awkward moment!” says Zoe.
Four months later they were at home in bed after a fun night out. Unprepared for the occasion of a proposal, they made do with a ring pull from a water bottle. “Because we had a few ales that night John said that I had to ask him the next morning. So the next morning I made John breakfast in bed and asked him to marry me,” says Zoe.
The wedding day
“Our wedding was more than we could have dreamed of,” says Zoe. They shared the relaxed day with 100 guests by the beach at Ocean Grove. “One highlight for me was waiting on the side of the road for my dad in the royal blue wedding car...when my dad arrived, that was when I started bawling of happiness,” she says. “So with my hand in dad's I danced down the aisle and with the biggest smile”. John had set up a shark rod in memory of Andrew beside the groomsmen, as he loved the beach and shark fishing. “Again I started crying,” says Zoe.
Zoe wore an ivory strapless gown that was tapered from the hip down. It featured a ruched bodice with diamante detailing and a corset back. She bought it online and had it altered by Melissa at Alter It in Hampton.
Instead of a traditional cake they went for an ice cream cake. “We don't like cake but love ice cream!” says Zoe. They had it made at Carousel Ice Cream and Cake in Elsternwick with the words ‘Zoe and John, Always and Forever’ written on it.
The photos were taken by Ash Vesali.
They went to Koh Samui in Thailand.
