NICHOLAS ROLAND AND KATIE ELDER
DREUX, ASCOT VALE, VIC

The meeting
Nick and Katie first met when they were working as dealers at the Crown Casino. Nick had spotted her on his way back from a break but didn’t speak to her until they were introduced by a mutual friend. He sent a message the next day to make sure she had got home safely and things progressed from there. “Being together is so easy because we complement each other perfectly. Whilst we have a number of things in commons we also appreciate and respect the things that make us individuals,” says Katie.

The proposal
Nick had planned to take Katie for dinner at Grossi Florentino for her birthday but they were closed for renovations so he booked for February instead. They had already discussed marriage and had talked about doing the proposal at the end of the year. But Katie was thinking as she got ready that it would be a great surprise if he proposed over dinner. And sure enough, he did. Katie was so excited that she grabbed the waiter’s arm and screamed “We’re engaged!”

The wedding day
Nick and Katie decided to surprise guests at their engagement party with a wedding. Of their 110 guests only 10 people knew what was happening. They took their wedding photos during the day and then went to Dreux for the engagement party and changed clothes. “It was so hard to keep the secret when the guests kept asking if we had set a date and we had to keep a straight face and just say ‘soon’,” says Katie. An hour into the party Katie and her bridesmaid snuck off to change back into her wedding dress. Nick began the speeches, and then Marry You by Bruno Mars began to play as Katie walked down the aisle. “The guests went crazy, yelling and screaming in delight,” says Katie. “The surprise was everything that we could have hoped for and more.”

The dress
Katie wore a white, off-the-shoulder gown with a ruched bodice. It came from Young Designers Gallery in Ivanhoe.

The cake
They had a tower of chocolate mud cupcakes decorated with chocolate hearts. It came from Ferguson Plarre Bakehouse.

The photography
The photos were taken by Rob Stambulic.

The honeymoon
They went to New York City.
