Making definitive decisions are often hard and sometimes take awhile. But, as soon as we do life flows faster and quickly comes together.

At least, this is the experience of Shari and Phillip Ujdur.

Unsettled at university in Canberra, Shari would drive home to Sydney every weekend. In her second year, she finally decided to try committing to Canberra.

"Little did I know that this would end my chance of ever returning to live in Sydney," she says. She took a part-time job at a Boost Juice, which was owned by Phillip's family and there she met her future husband.

After university, Shari still felt split between the two places and they spent a year and a half having a long distance relationship.

"But, I came to the conclusion that I could move with my work, however Phillip couldn't move his business."

Making the compromise is worth it though, she says.  "He makes me laugh and calms me down when I have freak out moments."

Similarly, Phillip says, "Shari brings out the best in me - she is an awesome cook and keeps me running on time. We have travelled together, worked together, laughed and cried together and we know we can make it through anything."

The proposal

When it came to popping the question, it was Phillip's turn to take his time.

After dating for six years Shari was getting restless. This was only compounded one Christmas when her sister called to wish them a Merry Christmas and tell them about several mutual friends who became engaged that day.

The conversation left Shari upset and unable to sleep.

She got up, did some washing up and when she finally went back to bed, lying side by side in the dark, Phillip asked if she really wanted a ring.

"Of course I said 'yes' and he said that he was wearing it on his little finger," she says. "I practically pushed him out of bed in an effort to get him to turn the light on and he got down on one knee and proposed. It took five months for me to plan the wedding - I wasn't wasting any more time!"

The wedding

With 250 guests and a traditional Croatian ceremony, it was a big day. But, Shari was well prepared.

Her brother, a hairdresser, did her hair and she spent the morning getting ready with her bridal party while watching 'Father of the Bride' and 'My Big Fat Greek Wedding.'

She had already rehearsed her vows so many times before that, when it came time "I jumped ahead of the priest's prompting and made everyone laugh."

She had also secretly been taking lessons in Croatian. When she gave half her speech in Croation, she received a standing ovation.

Other highlights of the day included "the beautiful speeches made by our fathers, my sister ... and our best man," as well as the "awesome band 'Zakon' who ... played until 3am in the morning. Our dance floor was always full!"
