PHILIPPA CAHILL AND CHRISTOPHER WINTERTON
ST AUGUSTINE’S CATHOLIC CHURCH, MELBOURNE AND QUEEN’S HALL, STATE LIBRARY OF VICTORIA, VIC
While Chris and Philippa actually went to the same high school they didn’t meet there. “Funnily enough, he was in the school band and played bass guitar to a solo I once sung,” says Philippa. But they didn’t officially meet until she played ‘the girl who screamed’ in a film clip that he was shooting for his band. “We started chatting at the shoot and haven't stopped!” she says. “Not a day has gone by, over the past six years that I haven't had a chuckle and a sing along with Chris.”
Quite the romantic, Chris planned a “magical” proposal with the involvement of friends and family. They were having a casual dinner with his family one night when there was a knock at the door. “Chris said: 'You better get that!'” She got up to open the door where she was greeted by Chris’ brother and a friend playing a guitar and a mandolin. There were tea lights all over the grass outside and a chair placed in the middle, put there by Chris’ parents. “Chris told me to take a seat, started playing his guitar and sung a song he'd written for me. At the end he got down on one knee,” she says. “All the while there were people riding bikes past, walking dogs...it was magical!”
The wedding day
After making their vows at St Augustine’s Church in Bourke St, they joined with their 120 guests for the reception in the Queen’s Hall at the State Library of Victoria. In keeping with the book theme, they had origami flowers made from book pages as table decorations and their invites were second hand books. “We managed to have a ball and at no point did I feel stressed,” says Philippa. “My highlight was when I hopped on the drum kit and played along with Chris to a song we'd written together. I managed to keep it a secret from my mum and best friends, somehow!”
Philippa wore the Carmina gown by Mariana Hardwick – a strapless, Art Deco inspired, slim-line gown with a dropped waist and contrasting hip sash with brooch details.
They had a chocolate mud cake from David Jones.
The photos were taken by friends - Steven Wright, Beck Page and Lauren Duiker.
They spent five weeks travelling to France, Italy, London and New York.
