FULL TIME: The Magpies hang on but not before some late drama! After Cloke's goal the ball went back to the centre before the Dons managed to edge forward after getting the centre clearance. A free was paid to youngster Luke Davis but he was just too far out from goal and his kick fell short in the goal square. Collingwood strikes late with the last two goals to win by just two points. Collingwood 1.2.10 (31) Essendon 0.4.5 (29)

A step too far ... Young Bomber Luke Davis kicks for goal after the siren.

Less than one minute to play and Cloke gets a free! He's right in front and surely will kick the goal. He does! Magpies back in front and they lead by two points. Collingwood 1.2.10 (31) Essendon 0.4.5 (29)

GOAL! Hang on, here come the Magpies. Krakouer, characterisically, finds space to dribble the ball through for a goal! Suddenly there's time. The margin has been cut to five points.

GOAL!! That man Goddard snag a major. He's having a real impact. In both games. Was it the sealer? The Bombers now lead by two goals with about eight minutes to play. Countenay Dempsey stepping up and has 10 possessions.

GOAL. Three minutes in and Jetta picks up another goal. There's a distinct feel that the Bombers have 'set' themselves for tonight. Suddenly they lead by seven points with about 17 minutes left in the match. The fans are getting vocal.

HALF-TIME: A behind right on the cusp of the main break from Harry O narrows the margin to just one point. Essendon with the slight edge. In terms of stats, the Bombers are well in front on marks and are ahead on the overall possession count. Collingwood 1.0.5 (14) Essendon 0.2.3 (15)

GOAL! Heppell pounces and puts the Bombers back in front. It's a high-quality contest. Feb Fast - in terms of speed. Michael Hibberd getting touches for the Dons, along with Goddard who is backing up superbly. Dayne Beams and Ben Johnson leading the way for the Magpies. Collingwood 1.0.4 (13) Essendon 0.2.3 (15)

GOAL! Sinclair replies for the black and white. The game is fast-paced, with a noticable drop off in pressure around the packs.

GOAL! Jett snaps truly. Fast handball from Dell'Olio. Bombers can boast the first one. They're looking pretty slick for an opening night in February. Mark Baguley with plenty of early touches for the Dons.

Now for the 'big one'. Competition heavyweights Collingwood and Essendon clash in the third and final NAB Cup game tonight. Any added bite to tonight's contest?

    Time to vote ....

FULL TIME. Magpies come away with an 18-point victory and need to quickly turn their attention to Essendon. As for the Bulldogs? Well, their pre-season campaign is cooked after two opening losses. Jarryd Blair was the leading possession winner for the Maggies with 10 touches while Cloke managed two goals out of seven (including one genuine 'super goal') for Collingwood. Clay Smith shone by snagging 14 touches for the losers. Western Bulldogs 0.4.5 (29) Collingwood 1.6.2 (47)

Collingwood's Ben Sinclair gets a firm grip on Bulldog Jason Johannisen.

GOAL! A second goal to Cloke and the Magpies are home. We're fast approaching full-time and the Maggies are out by 18 points. But as we've said before, 'super goals' can mean winning margins can be slashed in a heart-beat. Western Bulldogs 0.4.5 (29) Collingwood 1.6.2 (47)

We're approaching the final couple of minutes of this match and Collingwood leads by 12 points. Doggies will start the NAB Cup with consecutive losses (doesn't that hurt, losing two matches in one night?). Fox Footy shows the Bombers warming up again for their second match of the night. They supposedly came under scrutiny for their preparation and recovery across four days before Anzac Day last year. What will they try and manage for a one-hour break between matches?!

Halfway through the second half and Dane Swan shows his sublime skill for Collingwood. The superstar darted away from the stoppage, lent back and drilled a big goal from just outside the arc. He puts the Magpies in front. Western Bulldogs 0.4.5 (29) Collingwood 1.4.2 (35)

HALF-TIME. No more scores before the interval. No stars on the possession count with Dahlhaus, Griffen and Liberatore three Bulldogs with six touches in the half.

GOAL! A third to the Magpies close to half-time in this tight contest. Brent Macaffer, a player returning from injury, snares his goal. Bulldogs stay in front by two points. Western Bulldogs 0.3.3 (21) Collingwood 0.3.1 (19)

GOAL! A second to Giansiracusa. Not without a bit of drama. The veteran Bulldog picked up a 50-metre penalty after the Collingwood trainer walked across the mark! It made for a straightforward shot on goal. Western Bulldogs 0.2.2 (14) Collingwood 0.2.0 (12)

GOAL! Elliott gets Collingwood's second. It's not the big names who are shining early for the Pies.

An early poll question to start the 2013 footy season.

GOAL! The big Q makes his mark for Collingwood. Former Eagle Quinten Lynch runs into an open goal to make it one goal each early in this clash. For the record, Giansiracusa opened the account for the Dogs. Western Bulldogs 0.1.0 (6) Collingwood 0.1.0 (6)

Time to move onto game two. We're reliably informed the Magpies have been warming up in the car park as they prepare to meet the Bulldogs. It's still hard to get used to the strange requirements when three clubs play at the same venue on the one night. Can anyone remember those 'lightning premiership' days out at Waverley?

SIREN! And it's a big win for the Bombers by 26 points. Of course that margin in a shortened match (should we refer to it as Twenty20 footy?) is quite large. Another positive sign for the Bombers (during a time when the word 'positive' can have negative connotations!) was the possession figure next to new player Brendon Goddard - 13. Final score: Essendon 1.5.6 (45) Western Bulldogs 1.1.4 (19)

Western Bulldog's Mark Austin is spoilt by Essendon's David Hille at Etihad Stadium.

GOAL!! It's the sealer for the Bombers. A terrific snap from Cory Dell'Olio from 30 points pushes the margin back out to more than 20 points. Just a couple of minutes left. Essendon 1.4.6 (39) Western Bulldogs 1.1.3 (18)

Matthew Boyd has soared ahead of the overall possession count with 14 touches. The fantasy footy favourite again showing his capacity to snare the pill. I won't use any lines about leather poisoning. Carlisle, Goddard and Hooker with 10 possessions each for the Bullies.

GOAL! Liam Jones snags a major to keep the Doggies in touch. Fourteen points the difference and with 'nine-pointers' on offer, the margin can be cut in no time at all. A beautiful night in Melbourne. Fans are basking in the return of competitive footy. Essendon 1.3.4 (31) Western Bulldogs 1.1.3 (18)

Thirteen minutes left in the match and Essendon leads by 19 points. Goals to Bellchambers, Browne, Hardingham (a super goal) and Davey have the Dons eyeing off a victory. It's not overstated but there is a sense that the Bombers want to 'prove' something tonight. Essendon 1.3.4 (31) Western Bulldogs 1.0.3 (12). Certainly some red and black fans are making their feelings known with some placards.

In other footy action today, Andrew Wu reports that it was the sight that will have Sydney fans gushing - Kurt Tippett burning off a high-class defender out of the goal square and marking a bullet-like pass from the midfield. The only problem, of course, is it will be another four months before it can happen again. Of course he was writing about reigning premier Sydney's intra-club clash, featuring controversial new recruit Kurt Tippett. READ MORE

HALF-TIME: A pretty entertaining half of footy in this quick-fire match. Carlisle, Fletcher and Goddard all with nine touches for Essendon while Nick Lower leads the way with nine possessions for the Bulldogs. Essendon with three goals to just one (albeit a nine-pointer) for the Dogs. Essendon 1.2.4 (25) Western Bulldogs 1.0.3 (12)

SUPER GOAL! Strange to see two nine-pointers so early in a match. It wasn't deliberate from Hardingham but his tumbling effort somehow found its way between the big sticks. Bombers snatch back the lead. We've got the close one Harry.

Less than four minutes to play in the first half of game one tonight. Plenty of 'end-to-end' footy as the teams test each other out. Great to see Adam Cooney looking fighting fit ... so far anyway.
    LATEST SCORE: Essendon 0.1.3 (9) Western Bulldogs 1.0.3 (12)

Trivia buffs take note (actually don't really!). Shaun Higgins gets the Bullies' first goal and it's one from 'beyond the arc'. A SUPER GOAL! Bulldogs take the lead with one big effort. By the way, it's really strange to hear 'Goodes running out of the backline' when watching the blue, red and white versus the red and black.

GOAL! Bombers get the first major. Not a 'super-goal', just a run-of-the-mill effort after a strong mark by Bellchambers in the square. Essendon by five points.

Goddard's first touch is a turnover. I'm expecting plenty of peptide-related jokes from footy fans tonight. They won't all get published, but you can at least try! Bulldogs on the board with one behind.
    Latest score: Essendon 0.0.0 (0) Western Bulldogs 0.0.1 (1)

We're away at Etihad Stadium. Jobe Watson sitting in the coaches' box alongside James Hird. Interesting that Hird conducted a pre-match interview on Fox Footy but basically he didn't say anything. All eyes on Brendon Goddard in the red and the black.

If you're more interested in pep talks than peptides (or, more accurately, just want a run-down of which players play for which teams!) check out our guide to week one of the NAB Cup. Brent Diamond has given a run-down of the three Victorian teams in action tonight, along with the six other clubs taking to the field for competitive action this weekend. READ MORE.

    • I am not a troll, however I do stand apart from the Football mania that is ever increasingly saturating our workplaces, media outlets and public spaces, and which at certain times of the year reaches excessive and epidemic proportions.

It is my desire to assist people to see that there is more to life than the ability to put a ball through some white posts

      • Spot on Mark, but unfortunately it's all about the $$$ now a days. Not everyone has the luxury to get Foxtel. Well done AFL, you find new ways to kill this great game every year. Can't wait for the capped interchange next year then what's next? Red cards and maybe a sin bin?

    • " Under a bridge ". Ah veiled reference to a fairy tale ... however, there is no forum to vent about things ANTI ALF. As most educated people know ... AFL is a game designed as a social engineering tool... It gives some members of society a violent out let and thus helps control the population 's urge to yell and scream for no reason when someone touches a point less air filled leather ball.

The sooner it ends the better..

    • After a couple of years abroad, I've come back to learn that if you don't pay for pre season footy - you miss out. Oh well, Euro football on SBS is better anyway, Be careful AFL, you're brand is good but quickly being overtaken globally by world football.
