Live AFL: St Kilda v Richmond

FINAL SCORE: St Kilda 16.17 (113) Richmond 18.13 (121)

BEST: Richmond: Riewoldt, Maric, Cotchin, Martin, Nahas
St Kilda: Goddard, Armitage, Riewoldt, Hayes

The win over Sydney in round seven was a glimpse into their potential. The thumping of Hawthorn last week raised plenty of eyebrows. Tonight's win - against a club with which they hold a terrible recent record - prodded many footy observers wide awake. The Tigers have to be looking seriously at finals action now. Games against Dockers and Giants in next two weeks should leave them at 7-5 heading into their round 13 bye weekend. Can I grab a seat on the 'wagon?

Q4 - 32.13: SIREN!
The Tigers are home! What a victory! Richmond's first victory over the Saints since 2003. What a brilliant contest. Six goals to either team in the final quarter. Eight goals to Riewoldt for the match. This clash had a bit of everything. Numerous lead changes. Swings of momentum. A cracking game.

Q4 - 29.47: GOAL!
You guessed it? Saints this time. Armitage the scorer. The Saints stay within striking distance. There's still time ....

Q4 - 26.59: GOAL!
Riewoldt with the sealer! Surely .... That's his 8th major and they Tigers are out by 15 points. Little more than three minutes of game time. I can't remember a game quite like this for some time. It's a throwback to more free-wheeling free-scoring times of yesteryear.

Q4 - 25.01:
Back-to-back goals for the Tigers! Riewoldt and Ellis from in close. They get some breathing space. Less than five minutes to play. The stands are shaking!!!! But are there's still more twists to come in this match?

Q4 - 18.37: GOAL!
Milera for the Saints! They're back in front! A mighty game.

Q4 - 17.24: GOAL!
Jack Riewoldt finds space, marks and goals. Tigers back in front! This is a classic game with end-to-end scoring.

Q4 - 15.37: GOAL!
Gram again!!!! Saints hit the lead! Some conjective about whether there should have been a free to the TIgers in defence.

Q4 - 13.50: GOAL!
Saints are red hot! Gram slots their third in a matter of minutes! Wow we!

Q4 - 11.20: GOAL!
Consecutive majors to the Saints and Captain Riewoldt steps up. What was I saying about the Tigers looking home .......?

Q4 - 10.22: GOAL!
Saints get one back. Armitage a strong contested mark and goal. They are hanging in ...

Q4 - 7.20: GOAL!
Dusty Martin from a long way out! Sharp handball came from Nahas after a free.

Q4 - 4.50: GOAL!
Vickery with a mighty roost! The spearhead let loose with a thumping punt from beyond 50. How's that Tiger Army going now? They were merely restless pre-match. Now they've been nudged firmly and are wide awake. Tigers by 14 points

Q4 - 3.45:
Saints with the opening score of the final term - a behind to Milne from far.

It's a cracking game that can still go either way. (Jack) Riewoldt's influence was reduced as the Saints managed to double-team him where necessary. The match has ebbed and flowed but from my seat a more mature and composed Richmond outfit is set to take the points tonight. A landmark win looms. What can the Saints do to change my mind?

Q3 - 28.45: Siren!
A quarter of footy that raised more questions without answers. Saints were badly inaccurate in front of goal with 1.8. But the tempo is still with the Tigers.

Q3 - 23.30:
Saints have activated their substitute. Cripps is off (possibly hamstring soreness) and Siposs comes on. Addam Maric still wearing the vest for Richmond.

Q3 -19.05:
Deledio (22) edges ahead of Cotchin on overall possessions. Tigers are destroying them for total disposals (58+), safely ahead on both the contested and uncontested count.

Q3 - 14.38: GOAL!
Riewoldt! The other one! .... meaning the Saints captain. A great diving mark was rewarded with an excellent conversion. The Saints stay within striking distance.

Q3 - 13.12: GOAL!
Nahas on the run. A terrific roving goal and the Tigers are out by 20! 'Is this actually happening'? is the cry heard from the Army.

Q3 - 10.35: GOAL!
Richmond. The Mullet pulls down a mark and delivers. The match is turning Richmond's way.

Q3 - 9.40: If you'd missed a couple of years of AFL and spent time in the wilderness, a return to the flock tonight would offer plenty of surprises. The Saints have been liberated from the Ross Lyon lock-down model while the 'up-and-about' Tigers are a team going places. The upward curve is an attractive one for them. Richmond has silky stars in the middle, along with a handy recruit with a mullett. Footy never stays the same ....

Q3 - 1.40: GOAL!
Ellis snap goal a great start to the term for Richmond. Nine points up for the visitors.

The Tigers were always making steady progress through the early rounds without significant input from Jack Riewoldt. That may have changed tonight. Six goals against Hawthorn last week and five majors to half-time. His discovered form could be the extra ingredient which takes the Tigers into the top eight. There are still a few concerns for Richmond however. They dominated the possession count (overall disposals, handballs, uncontested possessions) yet lead by only two points. Hate to see it Tiger fans ... but there's still room for heartache tonight. Time will tell.

Q2 - 32.10: Siren!
Late Richmond goal from Deledio gives them a two-point lead. His kick from the arc came from a quick centre clearance and seemed to take only a few seconds. A run of play that is always possible at this 'fast' venue. St Kilda 9.6 (60) Richmond 9.8 (62)

Q2 - 30.32: GOAL!
Milera for the Saints. Goddard was met heavily in the middle and Montagna pounced on the loose ball. His pass found Milera unattended and the first-year player booted truly.

Q2 - 28.10:
It's been Richmond's game so far but they've fallen short on the scoreboard.

Q2 - 24.40:  GOAL!
Saad at the other end. A kick out of mid-far. It's a fast-paced electric game.

Q2 - 22.05 - GOAL!
Edwards for Richmond. He made a quick decision to throw his boot at the ball after it bobbed off the pack and towards him right in front of goal. Instinctive and smart play. Tigers out by eight points.

Q2 - 18.40 - GOAL! Jumpin' Jack!
Riewoldt rides the pack and marks in front for the Tigers. A straight-forward shot on goal and Richmond grabs back the lead. He's back in touch Riewoldt. St Kilda 6.6 (42) Richmond 6.7 (43)

Q2 - 12.50 - GOAL!
Milne makes no mistake with a shot around the body in close. Gee he's a quality small forward. Finally getting the recognition he deserves.

Q2 - 11.50 -
A great couple of minutes replete with highlights (and lowlights). Ellis sprayed one badly for the Tigers, his shot on the run hitting the placards above the Richmond faithful at the southern end. Moments later - after a great build up - Jake King was denied a certain (juggled) from a spearing Martin pass. Surely umpire you've got to reward the small blokes!

Q2 - 7.20: GOAL!
Kosy mark and goal. The Saints big man marks strongly deep in the forward line from the Riewoldt disposal beyond 50. A clever snap from trickly angle brought the Saints to within two points of Richmond. That moment of play summed up plenty about Koschitzke. Just when you think he's battling, he steps up with something surprising to remind you of his talent.

Q2 - 5.40:
Game being played between the 50-metre arcs. Intense pressure on the ball-carrier at all times and players are getting clever with their disposal ... or at least they have not choice.

A terrific fast-paced opening quarter. Koschitzke missed a soda late in the piece which would have given the Saints the slight edge. But the stats were fascinating with Richmond well on top for overall possessions, thanks to a high count of uncontested possessions and stacks of handballs. Jack Riewoldt managed 2.3 for the term in an off-target display.

Q1 - 19.15: GOAL!
Dal Santo slots one through from 35 metres. Some fascinating stats so far. Tigers accumulating a tonne of uncontested possessions, mainly through handballs across half-back, already resulting in 30 more disposals overall.

Q1 - 15.25:
Midfield match-ups are hard to pin down. Players rotating left, right and everywhere as coaches juggle contests for an advantage. One minute one player is tagging one opponent, then another. Cotchin burning it up early with nine touches.

Q1 - 12.50: GOAL!
Riewoldt (the one wearing yellow & black)! He runs into an open goal this time.

Q1 - 9.30:
Excuse the delay footy fans. Some techical woes here at Etihad Stadium. The Richmond Army is taking up too much bandwidth. It's been a frenetic start to this match. Jack Riewoldt looking sharp in one forward line and getting on the end of a few passes.

- Plenty of chatter during the week about the gentle awakening of the 'Tiger Army'. They'll probably be wide awake with another win tonight! Check out Leaping Larry's column in today's Age about Richmond fans enduring 30 years of 'bunker mentality'.

7.10pm -
The head-to-head record of these opponents is quite remarkable. The last time the Tigers took the four points was quite some time ago .... in 2003! But the last time these two teams played - early last season - it was a draw (during that quirky period when draws happened weekly). And Etihad Stadium is something of a graveyard for Richmond.

- The Saints have gone for Dal Santo, Armitage and Cripps to start on the bench, with Siposs the substitute. Richmond has Houli, King, Ellis on the pine with (Addam) Maric wearing the vest.

6.55pm -
Fans are converging on the Docklands for this unexpected match of the round. Both teams have show n sharp form in recent weeks and the contest is sure to be willing.

    • The real test is against Adelaide over there....but pencil Richmond in for the finals considering the other sides and their run home as we've done the hard yards.

I'd be happy with 9th if we miss out.....we're just going to stuff other sides up on the way there and watch out next year!!

      • Seriously, does Bruce McAvaney barrack for St Kilda???? He never says anything negative about the saints and when Richmond did something it was, "well done" and then for St Kilda, it was "He's so brilliant, what a champion..." a sports commentator I thought he was supposed to be fair???
Suck it up princess, Richmond won!!!!!!!

        • I'm a Saints fan and was there tonight, what a great game. The Tigers were really tested but hung tough in the last 10 mins and won a game they deserved to. The Tiger band wagon is rocking and rolling!!
