Saturday afternoon football saw a lacklustre Richmond take the four points against Greater Western Sydney, while tonight North Melbourne just hung on to defeat the Gold Coast Suns.

FINAL SCORE: Gold Coast 12.7 (80) North Melbourne 11.21 (87)

North Melbourne: B Harvey 4, D Petrie 2, L Thomas 2, B Cunnington, D Wells, M Firrito.
Gold Coast: G Ablett 4, H Bennell 2, B Matera, J Brennan, J Caddy, L Patrick, S Day, T Hine.

UMPIRES:  Stuart Wenn, Simon Meredith, Michael Jennings.

CROWD: 10,170

SUMMARY: The Suns did their best but in the end lack of experience and a solid forward structure cost them. North Melbourne was never completely convincing, but like Richmond earlier today, the Roos will take the win. North Melbourne won disposals, clearances, inside 50s and marks, but inaccuracy cost them a percentage-boosting win. The Suns will be pleased with their effort but will rue a missed chance for a win. They could have snatched it several times in the last quarter. They will be sore and sorry, most notably Seb Tape, who's done a knee and will have scans on Monday, and Rory Thompson, who went off late in the fourth term. North Melbourne won't be ecstatic, but they did manage to hang on for the win. Roos by 7 points.

Q4 - 32.58: BEHIND AND SIREN!! Harper misses again but it doesn't matter - it's all over. Gallant Suns go down by 7.

Q4 - 31.24: BEHIND. A handy behind for the Roos, the lead is out to 6 points thanks to the sub Kieran Harper.

Q4 - 30.34: BEHIND. Lindsay Thomas has missed from 5 metres out on a sharp angle. A goal would still be enough for the Suns. A minute to go.

Q4 - 29.10: GOAL!! Bennell gets a quick handpass in the goal square and drills it home. Margin just 4 points. Suns refusing to go down! Under 2 minutes left.

Q4 26.46: Suns are pressing, getting the ball inside 50 but they can't hold it in there. 3 and a half minutes to go.

Q4 24.53: BEHIND. Lindsay Thomas has missed from 48 metres out. North by 10.

Q4 - 22.54: GOAL!! Some poor mistakes have resulted in 50 metre penalties against them. Petrie has a shot from 40 metres out and kicks the goal. Lead back out to 9. Still 7 minutes to go.

Q4 - 20.56: BEHIND. Suns pile on the pressure and win a free, but Matera takes the advantage and kicks a behind.

Q4 - 18.15: Ablett has had so much of it he hasn't had time to change his jumper, which has been ripped and hanging off him for at least a quarter now. He is everywhere this quarter.

Q4 - 17.05: GOAL!! Brandon Matera puts another one home for the Suns from a set shot. Suns are coming, they've narrowed the margin to just 4 points with 10 minutes remaining.

INJURY UPDATE: Suns are the walking wounded and Liam Patrick has joined the list. Looks to be cramp though, he should be ok.

INJURY UPDATE: Rory Thompson is chaired off by Gold Coast medical staff. Looks like a hamstring or a calf.

Q4 - 13.17: BEHIND. Suns push forward but Liam Patrick kicks a behind.

Q4 - 11.57: GOAL!! Sam Day takes a fantastic contested mark and the Suns have responded with a goal! Margin back to 11 points.

Q4 - 10.21: GOAL!! North have all the answers. Petrie with a quick reply. He snaps from the goal square.

Q4 - 8.46: GOAL!! Bennell curls a ripped from 45 out in the left pocket. Brilliant! Suns are coming...they are only 11 points down.

Q4 - 8.01: BEHIND! Rischitelli has a shot on the run from 40 metres out but he misses.

Q4 - 5.41: GOAL!! Wells runs into goal and the Roos pull further ahead. North by 18.

Q4 - 2.59: GOAL!! Harvey again! He's kicked a beautiful goal from a difficult angle. Amazing that he could see around that bandage to kick it.

SUBSTITUTION GOLD COAST: Alex Sexton comes on for Seb Tape, who has done a knee.

Q4 - 0.42: GOAL!!! Gary Ablett can't miss tonight - he snaps another beauty and the Suns have the perfect start.

SUBSTITUTION NORTH MELBOURNE: Aaron Black handed the red vest while Kieran Harper gets a run.

3QT ANALYSIS: The Suns refuse to go away and North can't quite shake the young team. There was a bit of push and shove in the third and the Suns kicked some great goals to stay within reach. You wouldn't put a win past the Suns but North Melbourne lead them in most stats and their experience should see them take the four points.

Q3 - 32.59: SIREN. After dominating early, the Roos survive a late Gold Coast comeback to lead by 12 at the last break. Gold Coast 7.5 (47) North Melbourne 7.17 (59)

Q3 - 30.49: BEHIND. Wells has a shot on goal for North but it doesn't make the distance. It's punched through for a rushed behind.

Q3 - 29.24: GOAL!! Josh Caddy marks it where the 50 meets the boundary line and makes up for his previous mistake with an absolute beauty.

Q3 - 28.49: BEHIND. Josh Caddy has a shot from a free kick and 50 metre penalty but he hits the post.

INJURY UPDATE: Both Harvey and Bennell are back on - Harvey with one of the biggest, whitest bandages you'll see wrapped around his head.

Q3 - 25.53: GOAL!! Ablett kicks a ripper from well outside 50 to cut the margin to 18.

Q3 - 23.56: GOAL!! Thomas slams an easy one home from the goal square. Roos by 24.

INJURY UPDATE: Seb Tape is being carried off the ground after his foot was caught underneath him in a contest, wrenching his knee. Doesn't look good. Brent Harvey is also coming off with a cut to his face.

Q3 - 17.13: BEHIND. North score another behind through Adams. They lead by 18 points.

Q3 - 15.48: FREE KICK AND BEHIND. Umpire pays a free kick to Ben Cunnington following a bit of push and shove after the Thomas goal. Commentators agree it was a soft free. Cunnington misses from 45.

Q3 - 14.42: GOAL!!! Lindsay Thomas cleaned up by Taylor Hine in the pocket. Thomas gets the free, runs around and kicks a great goal.

INJURY UPDATE: Harley Bennell is off having his ankle looked at. He should be right to come back on for the Suns shortly.

Q3 - 11.03: Rushed behind to the Roos.

Q3 - 8.27: GOAL!! Some great work by Taylor Hine for the Suns. He runs to 45 and kicks a beauty. Suns peg one back.

Q3 - 7.27: BEHIND. Tarrant has a set shot but misses from the pocket.

Q3 - 6.27: BEHIND. Some great tackling by the Suns gives Patrick a chance from 40 out but he misses to the right.

Q3 - 4.38: GOAL!! Harvey with another brilliant run inside 50. He breaks a tackle and kicks a magnificent goal.

Q3 - 1.07: GOAL!!! Brent Harvey runs inside 50 and rams it home from 15 metres out. Roos extend their lead to 9.

Third quarter is underway.

HT ANALYSIS: While the game hasn't reached great heights, some individual brilliance from Gary Ablett and Liam Patrick have kept the home crowd entertained. Goals from both players were among the best of the round. North's misses may prove costly as the Suns will surely take confidence from their first half and continue to pressure the Roos in the second. Despite the Suns' pressure, North Melbourne's experience has helped them fight back when the Suns looked ready to run away with it. North are on top in possessions, clearances and tackles and will hope to pull away in the third quarter. North Melbourne by 3 at half time.

Q2 - 30.30: SIREN. Gold Coast will go into the long break pleased with that half. Although the Roos lead by 3, the Suns have been very competitive.

Q2 - 28.20: BEHIND. Petrie has a shot from outside 50 but in searching for distance he's pulled the kick.

Q2 - 24.17: GOAL!! Somehow the ball drops into Harvey's arms as he wrestles with his man at the back of the pack. He finishes nicely and suddenly North have the lead.

Q2 - 22.36: GOAL!! Firrito kicks an absolute beauty from just outside 50. Fantastic finish. Suns still lead by 4.

Q2 - 20.32: BEHIND. Greenwood has a shot in hope for North that doesn't come off. Suns by 10.

Q2 - 19.19: Suns are pressing here, North Melbourne just holding on with some good defending.

Q2 - 15.31: BEHIND. Another miss for North, this time by Gibson from 35 out.

Q2 - 13.19: GOAL!!!! Gary Ablett turns it on for the fans at Metricon with an amazing goal from 50 metres that curves back to sail through the big sticks. Franklin-esque!

Q2 - 12.02: BEHIND. North are keeping the ball inside 50 but Wells can't convert, missing from the pocket.

Q2 - 11.02: BEHIND. Another ball rushed through North's goal.

Q2 -10.09: BEHIND. Suns rush the ball through.

Q2 - 6.19: BEHIND. Petrie has a shot from 40 metres but pulls it right.

Q2 - 1.35: GOAL!! Patrick with a great goal. He carried the ball, burned off his opponent and slotted it from 40. Suns pull away.

Q2 - 0.18: GOAL!! Brennan picks up the ball as it spills from the pack and snaps a long range goal. Great work by the Suns!

Q1 ANALYSIS: Neither team was particularly impressive in the first term but the Suns showed something early to hang in there against the Roos. North Melbourne improved as the quarter progressed but inaccurate kicking let them down. The Suns are working hard but they too lacked accuracy in front of goal. Both sides need to lift in the second quarter.

Q1 - 28.00: SIREN. A fairly lacklustre quarter and North lead by 2 points.

Q1 - 26.49: BEHIND. Roos are pressing hard but not getting rewarded for effort as Leigh Adams kicks another behind.

Q1 - 25.23: BEHIND. Robbie Tarrant wins a free kick and has a shot from the opposite pocket. The kick looks good but fades late. Another behind.

Q1 - 24.19: BEHIND. Drew Petrie flies around the pack and takes an uncontested mark in the pocket. But his kick is offline - another behind for the Roos. Scores level.

Q1 - 20.37: A fantastic tackle by Liam Patrick results in a shot on goal for the Suns, but he shanks it horribly and it hits the behind post. Out of bounds on the full.

Q1 - 18.01: GOAL! Kangaroos get their first through a snap from Ben Cunnington. A fairly quick reply from the Roos.

Q1 - 15.50: GOAL!! Gary Ablett produces some brilliance, roving the ball at the back of the pack and kicking it home. Suns by 7.

Q1 - 14.20: BEHIND. Another miss, this time to North Melbourne's Robbie Tarrant.

Q1 - 12.15: BEHIND. Jared Brennan has a long-range shot and misses...again. Slow start to this one.

Q1 - 10.23: BEHIND. Kick by North Melbourne's Sam Wright is touched off the boot by Harley Bennell.

Q1 - 9.21: QUICK STAT. Suns lead contested possessions 18 - 10.

Q1 - 5.28: BEHIND. Sam Day has a shot from outside 50 but he too has missed. Suns by 2.

Q1 - 4.19: BEHIND. Jared Brennan has a shot for the Suns, but he misses to the left.

Q1 - 3.04: Gary Ablett has a shot from 50 metres out on the boundary line, but his shot is smothered.

Play is underway at Metricon Stadium.

7.35 pm: Both sides are out on the ground, not long to go now. Last time these two teams met (round 5, 2012), North won by 34 points. But times have changed since then! Both sides are under pressure now and need a win tonight.

7.02 pm: There's been a late change in the Gold Coast team for tonight's game. Campbell Brown is out and Alex Sexton comes in. North Melbourne will line up as selected. Sexton will start as the substitute for the Suns and Kieran Harper will wear the vest for North Melbourne.

FINAL SCORE: GWS 12.2 (74) Richmond 11.20 (86)

Richmond: D Connors 3, J Riewoldt 3, S Edwards 2, B Deledio, D Jackson, T Cotchin.
Giants: J Cameron 3, R Palmer 2, T Greene 2, A Phillips, D Shiel, J McDonald, J Patton, S Schulz.
Matt Stevic, Chris Kamolins, Andrew Mitchell.
7,538 at Skoda Stadium.

SUMMARY: Richmond were horribly inaccurate on a wet and grey day at Skoda. GWS fought hard but ran out of puff despite a couple of impressive fightbacks. At times the Giants looked shaky, especially getting the ball inside 50, but their hardness at the ball was impressive. Dan Connors was impressive for Richmond, sealing the game for his side in the last quarter. Richmond will go into the bye glad for the rest after this tough encounter, while GWS will take confidence into their clash with Melbourne at the MCG. In the end, the more experienced side came away with the win, but GWS can take a lot of positives out of this one. Tigers by 12.

Q4 - 28.39: SIREN. A brave GWS fell away in the last quarter to a less than impressive Richmond. The Tigers barely got away with this one.

Q4 - 27.17: GOAL!! Palmer takes a courageous mark 15 metres out. He kicks a great goal, but with 35 seconds on the clock, the Tigers have this one.

Q4 - 24.26: GOAL!! Daniel Connors is everywhere - he kicks another from a set shot 45 metres out. Tigers have pulled away, they lead by 18 points.

Q4 - 22.52: GOAL!! Connors puts it through for the Tigers after recieving a handball from Riewoldt. Tigers by 12.

Q4 - 24.21: BEHIND. Callan Ward kicks from 50 but misses. Tigers by a goal.

Q4 - 20.24: GOAL!! Sam Schulz takes a good mark in his first game, and he finishes it off with a great goal - his first in the AFL. Tigers by just 7 with 5 minutes to go.

STATS WATCH: Tigers lead the inside 50 count by a whopping 30 to 60. They also lead the contested possessions, but somehow GWS are hanging in there.

Q4 - 16.04: BEHIND. Third behind in a row for Richmond as GWS rush it.

Q4 - 15.13: BEHIND. Dustin Martin misses for Richmond. Tigers can't put GWS away. 11 points the margin.

Q4 - 14.41: BEHIND. Nahas somehow finds some space and has a shot but he's missed badly.

Q4 - 11. 40: SUBSTITUTION TIGERS. Batchelor off, O'Hanlon on.

Q4 - 7.09: SCREAMER AND GOAL!! Jeremy Cameron takes a fantastic mark and then puts it through for the Giants. Mini-comeback mounting for GWS!

Q4 - 3.55: SUBSTITUATION GIANTS. Whiley off, Schulz on.

Q4 - 5.01: GOAL!! Toby Greene kicks a great goal from deep in the pocket. Could the Giants still be a chance here? Tigers by 15.

Q4 - 2.49: BEHIND. Edwards dribbles it across the face of goal. Yet another miss for Richmond.

Q4 - 1.15: BEHIND. Grigg takes an uncontested mark almost directly in front but he's pulled the shot. Richmond by 20.

Last quarter underway.

3QT ANALYSIS: The Tigers looked much better that quarter as the Giants started to fade. In heavy rain, the more experienced Tigers took the upper hand, despite some serious inaccuracy on goal. GWS are still within reach, but Tigers look likely to run away with it in the last.

Q3 - 30.53: GOAL AND SIREN!!! Great lead back towards goal by Cameron leads to a shot for the Giants right on three quarter time. Cameron makes no mistake and the Giants peg one back.

Q3 - 28.57: BEHIND. Jackson has another shot, but he misses.

Q3 - 26.52: GOAL!! Connors slots one home for the Tigers.

Q3 - 26.22: BEHIND. Another miss for the Tiges and for Edwards. They are peppering the goals.

Q3 - 23.01: GOAL!! Jack Riewoldt kicks a magnificent goal. He dribbled it through from almost right on the boundary line. Tigers by 17.

Q3 - 21.20: BEHIND. GWS lucky to get away with that. A poor kick from the defensive goal square by Luke Power was intercepted, but Dustin Martin couldn't make the Giants pay.

Q3 - 19.17: Rain is getting heavier and it's starting to get really dark. GWS are pushing but they have been unable to take the advantage. Once it reaches their half forward line the ball just seems to bounce back out.

Q3 - 14.12: BEHIND. Edwards again for the Tigers, but this time he misses to the right. It's all Richmond at the moment.

Q3 - 12.35: BEHIND. Edwards has a rushed shot on goal under pressure but he's missed. Tigers by 8. Momentum favouring the Tigers.

Q3 - 11.02: GOAL!! Jack Riewoldt is awarded a free kick for a high fend off. He puts it through and the Tigers lead by 7.

Q3 - 7.40: BEHIND. GWS rush a behind and the Tigers lead by a point.

Q3 - 6.48: Jake King is leaving the ground after copping some friendly fire from a teammate. He's bleeding from the face, but not too heavily, and it seems he'll be right to come back on.

Q3 - 5.32: GOAL!! Dylan Shiel runs onto the ball and rams it home for the Giants. Scores level!!

STATS WATCH: Richmond's Shane Tuck leads the contested possession count with 13.

Q3 - 2.16: GOAL!! Phillips marks the ball outside 50 but a late hit by Batchelor results in a 50 metre penalty and Phillips makes no mistake.

We're underway in the second half at Skoda Stadium.

HT ANALYSIS: After an exciting start to the quarter by the Giants, Richmond reasserted itself and pulled away. But a dogged effort by GWS saw them win the second quarter - albeit by just 2 points. The rain is making it tough for both sides but Patton is marking it like the sun is shining. Scully is leading disposals for the Giants while Tuck and Deledio have the most touches for the Tigers. GWS are playing really competitive footy and are working hard, but things are falling down for them as they head inside 50. Tigers still look the goods for this game, but GWS could make a few friends if they continue to play as hard as they did in the first half.

Q2 - 30.57: SIREN. Tigers lead by 12 at half time.

Q2 - 28.15: BEHIND. Tigers get the ball to a dangerous position but it's rushed through by the Giants.

Q2 - 25.55: GOAL!! Rhys Palmer nails the goal from 35 out after a great piece of team play under pressure by the Giants. Great goal by Palmer.

Q2 - 22.52: GOAL!! Trent Cotchin takes a great mark directly in front of goal and slots it through. Tigers pull away.

Q2 - 20.29: GWS move the ball well through the middle but again their disposal inside 50 lets them down.

Q2 - 19.12: BEHIND. Rushed behind to the Tigers.

Q2 - 16.59: BEHIND. Connors has a shot from the pocket but it's not on target. Edwards grabs it and snaps but it's a point to the Tiges.

Jonathon Patton has taken three marks so far, all contested. Showing great talent early!

Q2 - 13.17: BEHIND. Martin snaps from the pocket but hasn't pulled it back far enough. A point to Richmond.

Q2 - 12.09: BEHIND. Jackson has a shot for the Tigers but pulls it left. Lead back out to 8 points.

Q2 - 10.32: BEHIND. GWS score a point through Edwards.

GWS defending hard but the ball just keeps bouncing back into Richmond's forward 50. Tigers seem to have restored order but they lead by just 8 points.

Q2 - 4.21: GOAL!!  Brett Deledio was held by Tom Scully and wins the free kick. He puts it through from 50 metres out and the Tigers steady.

Q2 - 1.51: GOAL!! Toby Greene ducks and weaves and kicks a great goal for GWS. They are off to a flyer in the second quarter.

Q2 - 0.35: GOAL!! Jeremy Cameron gets a free kick in front of goal and puts it through for the Giants. Good start!

QT ANALYSIS: Play has been pretty sloppy at Skoda Stadium. After a very slow start the Tigers showed some good form but the Giants were tough around the contests and kept them pretty well held. The rain is bringing the skill level down but the Tigers are looking dangerous in patches. Patton has taken a couple of great grabs in the wet and is looking good.

Q1 - 32. 41: SIREN. Tigers lead by 14 at quarter time.

Q1 - 28.22: GOAL!! Shane Edwards slots one through from outside 50 for Richmond.

Q1 - 26.52: BEHIND. Jake King has a shot for Richmond but he misses.

Q1 - 24.55: GOAL!! Patton takes a great mark and puts it through from 15 out for the Giants. Great work by the debutant!

Q1 - 21.56: BLOOD RULE. Whiley off for the Giants.

Q1 - 19.25: GWS having trouble finding a target inside 50. They have done well to stay in the game with some desperate defending.

Q1 - 16.59: GOAL!! Shane Edwards intercepts an errant GWS handball and slots it through from almost directly in front.

Q1 - 15.30: GOAL! James McDonald scores the Giants' first from a free kick directly in front of goal.

Q1 - 13.57: GOAL!! Jack Riewoldt snaps an absolute beauty from the pocket. Tigers starting to come alive midway through the first.

Q1 - 12.30: GOAL!! Daniel Jackson soccers off the ground and puts one through for the Tigers.

Q1 - 10.28: Conca has another shot, this time from the pocket, but he's pulled it and the ball goes out on the full. Rain is coming down and it's affecting the game.

Q1 - 7.38: Finally a clear shot on goal for the Tigers, but Conca misses from just inside 50. Tigers lead by a point with the Giants yet to go inside 50.

Q1 - 4.31: Sloppy start from both teams, but Richmond are looking the better team early. Still scoreless at Skoda.

2.06: the teams are out on the ground in pretty dreary conditions. O'Hanlon will start as sub for the Tigers and Sam Schulz is wearing the green vest for the Giants.

About to get underway at Skoda Stadium, and there's been a late change for the Giants. Nick Haynes has been replaced by Mark Whiley due to a groin injury. Richmond will line up as selected.

    • Without doubt one of the worst games I have had to watch this year from the Tigers, they thoroughly deserved to lose that game with their horrific butchering of the ball, GWS deserved to win would have served the Tigers right, GWS are scary next year if they keep this up.

      • Yeah I think the GWS should have won too - all the tiges had to do was kick 9 32 and it would have been a draw. Or 8 33 and the GWS would have won .
