Live AFL: Western Bulldogs v Brisbane Lions

Scott Spits

BRISBANE LIONS 6.1  8.5  12.5  18.6 (114)
WESTERN BULLDOGS 2.3  5.6  5.10  7.14 (56)
Goals: Brisbane: A McGrath 5 D Merrett 4 D Rich 2 R Bewick 2 T Rockliff 2 A Raines J Redden P Hanley. Western Bulldogs: D Giansiracusa 2 D Cross J Roughead R Murphy S Higgins T Dickson.
Umpires: Stuart Wenn, Scott Jeffery, Andrew Mitchell
Official Crowd: 20,146 at Etihad Stadium

THE WRAP: An eyebrow-raising win by the Brisbane Lions. True, the Bulldogs squandered chances but the Lions were impressive throughout. Rockliff grew in stature with 40 possessions, along with two goals. Redden, Hanley and Zorko were other big contributors. Raines was terrific with his stopping role on Griffen. Stop Griffen = Stop Bulldogs. Sounds simple, but there's some truth in that statement. There's bound to be speculation about Cooney's value to the Doggies after he contributed just 12 disposals.

Q4 - 30.34: SIREN.
A mighty win by the Brisbane Lions .... Garry Lyon says it was one of their best wins since their premiership days. Can't argue with that.

Q4 - 27.43: GOAL.
Bulldogs with their second for the term. Cross from 30 metres out. Merely consolation.

'Lions, Lions' chant reverberates around Etihad Stadium. That rubs salt into the wounds for Bulldogs fans. Great win for Old Fitzroy today with the Lions set to unveil their Hall of Fame inductees in Melbourne today.

Q4 - 19.37: GOAL!!!
McGrath's fifth! That's bound to be a personal best. We will check. Lions by 64 points!

Q4 - 15.37: GOAL. Bulldogs!
They stop the streak. Roughead takes a contested mark close to goal and ends their string of behinds. Regardless of the final result, that goal mattered. Their first since the second quarter. Western Bulldogs 6.13 (49) Brisbane Lions 17.5 (107)

Q4 - 13.41: GOAL!!!
Guess which team. Brisbane with their fifth for the quarter. Bewick snags a second. This margin could really blow out .... currently 65 points

Q4 - 9.45:
Miss. Cooney drags a shot across the goal-face. Just seven disposals for the Brownlow Medallist. Dog of a day for the Bulldogs. Liberatore their top possession winner with 25. Haven't heard that reference for perhaps 15 years!?

Q4 - 7.35: GOAL.
This is becoming repetitive. McGrath picks up his fourth for the day. Lions lead by 10 goals. Bulldogs have just 0.5 since half-time.

Q4 - 5.12: GOAL!!
Three goals in five minutes for Brisbane. Hanley coverts from a tough angle. This is a disturbing day for the Doggies. They've gone missing.

Q4 - 2.31: GOAL.
Rich on the run for the Lions! A great goal from beyond 50 metres. Lions with the last six goals and lead by nearly 50 points!

Q4 - 1.23: GOAL!!
Redden with the first of the final term. The sealer. A nice snap. A shocking day for the Bulldogs really.

The Bulldogs will require an almighty comeback to somehow get over the line. Brisbane has done the hard work and a 37-point lead at the final break will be enough. Surely. But modern footy being what it is does give some hope for the Dogs. Rockliff having a blinder. Lock him in for three Brownlow votes. Western Bulldogs 5.10 (40) Brisbane Lions 12.5 (77)

Q3 - 27.57: GOAL.
Rockliff again. Two goals in a matter of minutes. He out-marked his opponent. Lions are on today.

Q3 - 25.57: GOAL.
Brisbane's third for the quarter. Likely B-O-G Rockliff kicks truly with his 30th possession. Margin is out beyond five goals.

It has been a forgettable quarter for the Bulldogs with just four behinds closing on three-quarter-time. And Boyd is having an a strangely quiet game with only 11 possessions. He's currently on the bench.

Q3 - 14.32: GOAL!
Lions with another one. They are taking their chances. Bewick from 45 metres with the goal assist from Brown

Q3 - 10.31: GOAL!! Merrett with his fourth. The burly forward (for today at least) slotted an excellent goal from a tricky angle in the forward pocket. Pressure rises on the Bulldogs as they face a 20-point deficity. About 10 minutes of game time left in this quarter.

Scoring has completely dried up in opening stages of the third quarter. Brian Lake forced off with an injury. Rockliff still going on his merry way with 25 touches by the 10-minute mark. Two behinds to the Bulldogs so far.

This match illustrates how the Lions are making gradual improvements in this competition. Their emerging midfielders are having an impact, most noticeably Rockliff (22 possessions), Hanley (19), Redden (16) and the soon-to-be cult figure Zorko (16). Importantly they are not super-reliant on Black, even though the veteran has 12 touches at 92% efficiency. For the Bulldogs, they need more from Boyd, the ball-magnet only has eight disposals to his name. Western Bulldogs 5.6 (36) Brisbane Lions 8.5 (53)

Q2 - 27.59: Siren.
That's the half-time break. A lower-scoring quarter than what it appeared it would be early on. Bulldogs reduce the deficit narrowly.

Q2 - 26.40: BEHIND.
Let-off for the Lions. Bulldogs force a turnover from the kick-in. Cooney pounces on the loose ball but can only manage a behind. Margin is 17 points.

Q2 - 22.29: GOAL.
Murphy after a 50m penalty. Bulldogs within striking distance with a couple of minutes left until the main break. Brian Lake having an effective game with 13 possessions and 10 marks already.

Lions have come to play. They pushed Hawthorn last week (for a portion at least!) following on from their big upset over West Coast two weeks earlier. Hanley (17 touches), Rockliff (16), Redden and Zorko (continuing a recent run of good form) are doing damage in the midfield. Brisbane has had a stack more uncontested possessions.

Q2 - 9.09: GOAL.
McGrath snags his third. Lions clear to a 23-point lead. They are responding to each challenge from the Bulldogs.

Q2 - 5.15: GOAL.
McGrath with a settling goal for the Lions. This is shaping as a shootout in genteel conditions at the Docklands.

Q2 - 3.19: GOAL!!
Giansiracusa hot early in the second term. Snap goal puts pressure on the Lions. Goal assist goes to Dickson.

Body blow for the Lions. They are forced into an early substitution. Maguire goes off, creating the prospect that Merrett may have to go back. Green comes on for the visitors at the break.

Q2 -0.22: GOAL. Higgins gets one. Crucially the Bulldogs make a mark early in the second quarter, cutting the margin to 16 points. Giansiracusa with the goal assist. Western Bulldogs 2.3 (15) Brisbane Lions 6.1 (37)

Lions set the tone early when Merrett snagged the first of his three goals after less than 90 seconds. Brisbane leading the way on disposal efficiency with other stats categories relatively even. Interestingly, the Bulldogs have had two more Inside 50s.

Q1 - 30.20: GOAL!!
What a quarter for the Lions. Raines gets in on the action, snagging a late goal to give Brisbane six for the term.

Q1 - 29.14: GOAL.
Dickson gets one back for the Doggies. Good accurate kick from the pocket.

Q1 - 26.47: GOAL.
Brisbane notches their fifth. Daniel Rich from directly in front. Lions out to a 22-point lead.

Q1 - 21.22: GOAL:
Already Daniel Merrett has three goals. The burly footballer slots another one from 30 metres out. Lions out to a great start, similar to their effort against Hawthorn last week.

1.35pm: No late changes for either team. Clay Smith the sub for the Bullies with Joshua Green wearing the vest for Brisbane.
