Live A-League coverage: Sydney FC v Wellington Phoenix

    Ashley Gray

    Sort posts by:

What a game! What a finish! When Pedj Bojic got his marching orders with 20 minutes to go, the Phoenix smelled blood,

attacking relentlessly, and pulling off a pearler of a Kenny Cunningham equaliser minutes from time.

But the Sky Blues are made of stern stuff these days - and once again, a man down, they prevailed with a last-minute winner.

Seb Ryall, Emerton and ADP were huge for Sydney while Hernandez and super sub Kenny Cunningham were strong for the unlucky Phoenix.

Frank Farina will be pleased with his teams's ability to come back when the chips are down - it's their third win on the trot and you get the sense they're on the up big time.

Ernie Merrick was hoping this match would kickstart the Phoenix campaign. It didn't but there are signs they can turn it around.

Match of the round so far without a doubt.

     SFC 2 WP1

    92nd minute:

Did I say the last three minutes would be murder for Frank Farina? I meant Ernie Merrick, of course.

A great Ryall run has found new boy Despotovic in the clear with an open goal and he finds the back of the net.

    Match winner!

    SFC2 WP1

    87th minute:

Crowd figure tonight is a decent 14,500. Haven't seen much of Despotovic so far - what with SFC under the pump.

And Cunningham scores! Unmarked on the right side of the six-yard box, he volleys Hernandez's corner into the back of the net. Great goal, well taken.

The last three minutes will be murder for Frank Farina.

    SFC 1 WP1

    83rd minute:

Carlos Hernandez is pinging shots from all over the park. It's a bit nuts really. Phoenix need someone to take control. There's still 10 minutes including injury time to come. An eternity in the game of association football.

    SFC 1 WP 0

    79th minute:

And here's a big tactical move by Farina. ADP off for ex-captain McFlynn. Sky Blue fans well know that often SFC -ADP = disaster. The final 11 minutes will test that equation big time.

Poor challenge by Cunningham on Emerton. More of a hack than a challenge and he cops a yellow for his efforts. Things are hotting up.

    SFC 1 WP0

    77th minute:

The SFC third of the field has become a shooting range for the Phoenix. Janjetovic is pulling off some fine saves as the men in yellow and black bring it on.

    SFC 1 WP0

    75th minute:

Cunningham striding hard down the left flank sends in a cross/shot/hit and hope that crashes into the left post. Close. Phoenix back in it.

    SFC 1 WP 0

    72nd minute:

And here's a potential gamechanger. Pedj Bojic, who'd been playing a blinder for the Sky Blues, has been sent off for a blatant rugby tackle on Cunningham. Can't complain about that. From the ensuing Hernandez free kick, Lia's free, diving  header sails over the crossbar. The tenor of the match is already changing.

    SFC 1 WP0

    69th minute:

I'd like to give a Phoenix player a rap, but so far this half they've been ineffectual. Merrick knows it too.
He's just brought on Riera for Caira in midfield.

    SFC 1 WP0

    63rd minute:

Farina ups the ante: Serbian striker Radko Despotovic comes on for Naumoff. SFC smell blood. Let's see what the tall goalscorer - capped four times by his country - can do.

    SFC 1 WP0

    58th minute:

Pedj Bojic is having a huge game for the Sky Blues: he's been involved in most of Sydney's dangerous plays. The ex-Mariner is absolutely owning his right side of the park.

Phoenix looked tired. Too many players backing up from All Whites duty I suspect. Sydney doing it too easy.

    SFC 1 WP0

    54th minute:

Emmo, despite occasionally looking cumbersome on the ball - he is a big lad after all - is everywhere on the pitch. A neat one-two with Bojic sets up Garcia for a header and his effort is only a few feet wide. Merrick can't be happy with the way his team have started this half. Time for a sub. Ifill on for young Jason Hicks.

    SFC 1 WP0

    50th minute:

The Sky Blues are really having a go now. Nicky Carle shoots on the run from 25m and Moss gets down low to save.

    SFC 1 WP0

    49th minute:

SFC on the boil. Bojic curls a screamer towards the top corner of the Phoenix goal and Moss tips it over for a corner.

From the set play, Abbas' low shot bangs into a clump of desperate Phoenix defenders. Close.

    SFC 1 WP0

Ernie Merrick is the A-League's most capped coach and he must be hoping the Phoenix can shrug off their horrible away form and grab at least a goal in this second half.

It's not beyond them if Hernandez fires but it all hinges on ADP. And here he is dictating from midfield: a lovely flick to Emerton who can't quite control the ball.

    SFC 1 WP0

A curious first half ends with the Sky Blues one up. It was curious in the fact that the Phoenix dominated play for long periods but Sydney were able to maximise their possession when they got it.

That state of affairs was as usual down to ADP, who provided the good oil in midfield, but he was ably supported by Richie Garcia - what a goal his was - and a rampant Chianese up front.

For the Phoenix, Carlos Hernandez was a handful whenever he got the ball, while Lia and Muscat provided grit and spirit in the engine room.

ADP is really hitting his straps now, so how the Phoenix control the wily Italian will be crucial to their chances. Should be a belter of a second half.

Time for a cuppa. See you in five.

    SFC 1 PW0

    39th minute:

But the Phoenix aren't giving up. Hell no. Hernandez unleashes a goal-bound 25m piledriver and Janjetovic is forced to dive full stretch to push it around the post.

    SFC 1 WP0

    33rd minute:

GOAL! Richie Garcia cuts inside a defender from 22m and fires a deadset cannonball past a groping Moss in the Phoenix goal. Lotta gunpowder on that one, folks. Great goal.

    SFC 1 WP0

    32nd minute:

Miss of the season so far. Jeremy Brockie released into space by a beautiful ball from Lia hoofs his shot a conservative 100m over the bar. The Stadium is drowned in laughter. Poor Brockie.

    SFC 0 WP0

    28th minute:

Best chance so far. Chianese smashed in a low cross from the right side that found ADP, whose jinking run was cut short metres from the line.

    SFC 1 WP0

    23rd minute:

Slowly the momentum is changing. Matty Muscat cops his fourth card of the season for a blatant hand ball.

The trademark ADP freekick bends a couple of feet over the bar. The Cove are singing now.

    SFC 0 WP 0

    20th minute:

Much like the Wanderers in their pomp, SFC are absorbing the Phoenix attacking forays and hitting on the counter.

It's not ADP's way though - he'll want to control the midfield.

    15th minute

ADP rides out a challenge, makes space and shoots from 20m. The ball is gaining altitude as it passes over the woodwork but it woke the Cove up. And that's a nice mo' ADP, - very 70s porn star. He's obviously been working on that during the week.

    12th minute:

Garcia is showing a lot of oomph from midfield for the Sky Blues but Phoenix are looking the more urgent.

So far they haven't had any luck getting dangerous balls into the box, but they've definitely had most of the possession.

Lia, sprinting down the right wing has fired in a couple of good crosses for the NZers. ADP has had trouble stamping his authority and Nicky Carle's passes are not finding their man.

    SFC0 WP0

    8th minute:

It's the midfield where Phoenix are in the ascendancy. Brett "Emmo" Emerton seems to be chasing shadows. Costa Rican Carlos Hernandez has his feet in everything. He's fired up.

    4th minute:

Phoenix are dominating so far. They look hungry. SFC are stretched at the back, so much so that Bojic cops a yellow card for a rough late tackle.

And here's a Phoenix corner, the first of the match: alas, for the men in yellow and black Hernandez's corner was way too long.

Phoenix kick off. Wow, what a start - from the kick-off Hernandez plants a shot from 35m out in the stands. We'll call that a statement of intent. Ernie Merrick has said this match is where the Phoenix campaign begins - what with NZ World Cup duties at an end. We shall see.

Welcome to Allianz Stadium. A respectable crowd has rocked up for a match Phoenix will have been fearing all season. The last time they came to Allianz they copped a 7-1 hiding with Alessandro Del Piero bagging four goals. They'e not had a stellar start to this season either and with players such as Glen Moss backing up from the All Whites' World Cup nightmare against Mexico, morale can't be high. That said, the unflappable Ernie Merrick - a man SFC love to hate - will be confident his team can put on a decent show. All the talk at SFC this week has been about new Serbian signing Ranko Despotovic. He could be the spark SFC have at times been lacking up front this campaign. Yet the Sky Blues have some momentum, coming off two wins in a row. It's been a wet old week in Sydney, so let's hope the surface isn't too heavy and the football is good. Should be a compelling encounter. The captains are shaking hands...

    Allianz Stadium, Sydney, 5.30pm

    TV: Fox Sports 1HD

Radio: ABC online/mobile app (first half); 702 ABC (second half)

    Twitter: #SYDvWEL

Odds: Sydney FC $1.75 draw $3.60, Wellington $4.35

Head to head: Sydney 10, Wellington 11, drawn 1

    Referee: Jarred Gillett

    1. Joel Chianese (Sydney FC)

With the signing of Ranko Despotovic, the fight is on for places in Sydney's front third. Chianese is clearly good enough to play at this level but needs to score again - as he did last week - to keep his spot.

    2. Glen Moss (Wellington Phoenix)

Had a torrid time of it with the All Whites in recent weeks, conceding nine goals over two legs against Mexico as the national team crashed out of World Cup contention. He will badly want to make amends.

    3. Brett Emerton (Sydney FC)

Are there signs of life from Emmo? Some might think he is a spent force, with back problems to boot, but his last few performances suggest otherwise. Don't forget he is working into a new role as a defensive midfielder.

    4. Paul Ifill (Wellington Phoenix)

Seems to have perfected the art of popping up and causing trouble against Sydney FC by either scoring or creating goals. Ifill might not start, but even if he comes off the bench, expect a big impact from the Phoenix veteran.

    5. Ali Abbas (Sydney FC)

Shifted in as an emergency left-back to cover for the suspended Marc Warren, Abbas has shown plenty in his new role and could take some dislodging. This has been the best start he has made to an A-League season.

Nikola Petkovic (Sydney FC) v Jeremy Brockie (Wellington Phoenix)

There are few more instinctive finishers in the competition than Brockie, who has a wonderful knack for scoring in unlikely circumstances. Petkovic is improving by the week, and will want to keep a close eye on the Kiwi international.

    Frank Farina (Sydney FC)

The pressure on Farina has been relieved - somewhat anyway - by back-to-back wins. That should get the supporters off his back for another couple of weeks at least, and he'll be expecting to make it three in a row here.

    Ernie Merrick

    (Wellington Phoenix)

Unlikely to get too many cheers due his lengthy involvement with Melbourne Victory, Merrick is hoping to change some perceptions. It has been a tough start to life with the Nix but he finally has a full squad to choose from.
