FULL TIME - Melbourne Victory 3 (Barbarouses 14" Thompson 68" Nichols 76") defeated Adelaide United 0

Melbourne Victory has secured its top six spot for another week and continued Adelaide's winless streak with a 3-0 win in front of 20,064 at Etihad Stadium.

Nathan Coe's penalty save with Victory a goal up, but down to 10 men, changed the game as Archie Thompson doubled the advantage within a minute.

Sergio Cirio's poorly-struck penalty was saved by Coe to protect Victory's advantage.

Earlier, Adrian Leijer was sent off for two yellow cards in 11 minutes late in the first half, leaving Victory defending Kosta Barbarouses' early goal a man down.

With all the momentum going Melbourne's way, Mitch Nichols scored into an empty net after a defensive calamity from Adelaide defending a bouncing ball.

Smiles on the Melbourne bench and relief on the field as the Victory's rearguard effort with 10 men produces one of the biggest results of the season!

    90+4 - MV 3 (Barbarouses 14" Thompson 68" Nichols 76") AU 0

Lustica takes a long shot from a central position but again Coe is equal to it and dives to his left to parry it away.

Adelaide corner with stoppage time expired...is held by Coe and the final whistle goes!

    90+2 - MV 3 (Barbarouses 14" Thompson 68" Nichols 76") AU 0

An offside flag ends the Adelaide attack.

    90+2 - MV 3 (Barbarouses 14" Thompson 68" Nichols 76") AU 0

This result will guarantee Melbourne Victory a top-six spot by the end of the weekend, regardless of results in other games. If results go against Adelaide they could find themselves as many as seven points out of the top six.

    77.30 - MV 3 (Barbarouses 14" Thompson 68" Nichols 76") AU 0

    Victory breaking again with Milligan!

He has Thompson and Nichols streaming forward!

But he held back the pass too long, Thompson is offside when the ball gets played.

    77.00 - MV 3 (Barbarouses 14" Thompson 68" Nichols 76") AU 0

Even with 10 men, surely there's not enough time for Adelaide now. If anything the sit back and counter-attack style is suiting Melbourne.

    75.00 - MV 2 (Barbarouses 14" Thompson 68") AU 0

    GOAL!

Catastrophe in the Adelaide defence leaves an open net for Nichols!

A long ball from Coe bounced 10m outside the area...Galekovic came off his line and slid straight past it at the top of the area, presenting the ball to Nichols and an open net for him to knock in the finish!

    75.00 - MV 2 (Barbarouses 14" Thompson 68") AU 0

Corner for Adelaide...first head is from Broxham to clear.

Barbarouses tries to escape on the break and is fouled by Tarek Elrich. He gets a yellow card for it.

    73.00 - MV 2 (Barbarouses 14" Thompson 68") AU 0

A turnover gifts the ball to Barbarouses in midfield but he's not no support ahead of the ball. He tries for an ambitious long shot but hooks it across the face and it rolls harmlessly out.

    70.00 - MV 2 (Barbarouses 14" Thompson 68") AU 0

    67.00 - MV 1 (Barbarouses 14") AU 0

    GOAL!

Archie Thompson taps in to put Melbourne Victory up 2-0!

Adelaide lost the ball on the right side of the penalty area and Broxham was putting on pressure to win the ball.

He passed to Barbarouses, who cut the ball back for Nichols. Nichols couldn't get his step right and the ball rolled past him, to Thompson!

The celebration was a wild one too as Victory players came from everywhere.

    66.30 - MV 1 (Barbarouses 14") AU 0

    PENALTY SAVED!

Sergio Cirio's shot is saved by Nathan Coe!

He shot right-footed and it was a lame effort almost straight at Coe! It only needed a small dive down to the right to be denied!

The spill is knocked out for a goal kick. Victory hold their lead!

    65.30 - MV 1 (Barbarouses 14") AU 0

    PENALTY!

Jeronimo picked Contreras' pocket and dashed into the penalty area down the right.

He veered towards goal and Contreras came across the Adelaide forward to knock him to ground!

The crowd is howling at the replays because Jeronimo sold the contact for all it was worth.

But Contreras gets a yellow card and Adelaide gets a penalty.

    65.30 - MV 1 (Barbarouses 14") AU 0

Jeronimo wins a foul off Milligan in shooting territory, slightly to the left of centre.

Carrusca and Jeronimo over the free kick, two Victory players in the wall.

Jeronimo takes a shot but it's high and wide away to the right. Not the first time tonight Adelaide has blazed a half chance out of bounds.

    63.00 - MV 1 (Barbarouses 14") AU 0

Zullo whips in a cross from the left but there's no solid contact on it! Jeronimo was the closest but he couldn't get purchase on the header at the near post.

    61.30 - MV 1 (Barbarouses 14") AU 0

Carrusca wins a corner off Broxham.

    It's taken quickly to Isaias.

And then mis-hit at goal, well wide of the target.

Adelaide has now passed 60% of possession. Both teams have subs warming up on the sidelines.

    58.00 - MV 1 (Barbarouses 14") AU 0

    57.00 - MV 1 (Barbarouses 14") AU 0

Jeronimo takes an ambitious shot from wide on the left and can only slice it wide to the near side.

    53.00 - MV 1 (Barbarouses 14") AU 0

Ferreira's cross from the right now is dived in front of and cleared away.

Adelaide pushing back towards 60% of possession for the game (59.1) and now in control of this second half.

    51.00 - MV 1 (Barbarouses 14") AU 0

    Adelaide consolidating possession.

Zullo threads through Carrusca on the left and his cross is blocked and cleared.

A second ball comes in for Carrusca but he hooks his shot across the face.

    49.00 - MV 1 (Barbarouses 14") AU 0

Barbarouses runs down the right and sends a cross into the area but Boogaard is able to deny Nichols with a strong block.

Also it has been confirmed that Nicholas Ansell was given a yellow card for coming onto the field before officially being subbed on at the end of the first half. He starts behind the eight ball with a yellow already too his name.

    KICK-OFF - MV 1 (Barbarouses 14") AU 0

    The second half is underway!

    HALF TIME - MV 1 (Barbarouses 14") AU 0

Troisi looked like he wanted to head straight down the tunnel after being subbed but Muscat demanded he sit on the bench and watch the remaining moments of the first half.

    HALF TIME - MV 1 (Barbarouses 14") AU 0

    It was an action-packed half.

Cassio suffered a hamstring injury and was subbed off early for Steven Lustica.

Victory sprung the Adelaide line for Troisi to play in Barbarouses for the only goal.

Adrian Leijer was sent off for two yellow-card offenses in 11 minutes. The first for a sliding challenge from behind on Carrusca and second for grabbing and dragging down Cirio after being beaten for pace on the left.

Victory then made a tactical change with Nick Ansell on for Troisi.

It makes for an intriguing second half! Leave a comment at any time.

    HALF TIME - MV 1 (Barbarouses 14") AU 0

Kevin Muscat is waiting for Ben Williams on the touchline and is chewing the refs' ear off as he walks down the tunnel!

They disappear down the tunnel with words, not really being exchanged, but certainly coming from Muscat's direction!

    45+4 - MV 1 (Barbarouses 14") AU 0

The Adelaide free kick slides across the face after skimming off heads from the left.

Ben Williams blows for half time after three and a half minutes of stoppage.

    45+3 - MV 1 (Barbarouses 14") AU 0

There is chaos now as Nicholas Ansell runs on without a player coming off!

Victory not wasting any time with the sub as they want Ansell to defend the free kick before half time.

Troisi is the unlucky man who eventually has his number held up by the subs board.

He walks off with a very annoyed look on his face.

But it's clear that Victory wants the tall defender Ansell as insurance for this stoppage time set piece.

    45+1 - MV 1 (Barbarouses 14") AU 0

    RED CARD!

Adrian Leijer is sent off for his second yellow!

Cirio beat him for pace on the left flank and Leijer responded by grabbing him with a professional foul!

Did he forget he was on a yellow or just roll the dice?

Either way he's off! Leigh Broxham gets booked for protesting too.

What a dramatic change to the game in first-half stoppage time!

    43.00 - MV 1 (Barbarouses 14") AU 0

The through ball that let Thompson in was a bouncing ball that actually went through Troisi's legs without him taking a touch!

Adelaide countered through Jeronimo but his ball from the right was neither a cross nor a shot, out for a goal kick.

    42.00 - MV 1 (Barbarouses 14") AU 0

Thompson is played through centrally and takes a shot but Galekovic is equal too it with a diving save!

    41.00 - MV 1 (Barbarouses 14") AU 0

Adelaide passing the ball around the top of the area...Ferreira cut the ball inside from the right to Lustica but Milligan intercepted.

It launches a Victory counter attack...Nicholas was through down the left and tried to cross for Barbarouses...it was knocked away by Zullo but straight back to Nichols! He has a crack from a tight angle on the left but blazes it wide.

    38.00 - MV 1 (Barbarouses 14") AU 0

Carrusca brings  ball down and sends a lateral pass to Lustica at the top of the area. Lustica shoots first time but drags it across the face and out for a goal kick.

Melbourne clears another attack after a brief moment of hesitation and Coe came out off his line and Leijer came back for a bouncing ball.

    34.00 - MV 1 (Barbarouses 14") AU 0

Adrian Leijer becomes Melbourne's first player booked for a foul sliding in from behind on Carrusca.

    32.00 - MV 1 (Barbarouses 14") AU 0

Another chance for Melbourne but Thompson puts it wide of the right post!

Barbarouses was through on the right and cut a pass back for Thompson arriving at the near (right) post. But Thompson's sliding finish was wide to the near side!

Replays show that Barbarouses was a long way offside. Adelaide would have had every right to be furious had Thompson's shot found the net!

    29.00 - MV 1 (Barbarouses 14") AU 0

Another corner for Adelaide as Ferreira's run down the right is finished by Contreras.

Carrusca's corner is met in a pack of players at the near post by Jeronimo, who balloons his header out for a goal kick.

    29.00 - MV 1 (Barbarouses 14") AU 0

Now a shot from Lustica on the left flashes across the face of goal. Coe wasn't sure about it and did dive full lenght but the ball was not close to the target.

    27.30 - MV 1 (Barbarouses 14") AU 0

Leijer heads an Adelaide cross behind for a corner.

Carrusca takes...headed out of the penalty area but only as far as Ferreira.

Ferreira blazes high and wide. Nowhere near the target.

    26.00 - MV 1 (Barbarouses 14") AU 0

Free kick for Adelaide on the right.

Three man wall on the edge of the area.

Carrusca with a short pass and then a through ball looking for Cirio...it runs long and out for a goal kick.

    24.00 - MV 1 (Barbarouses 14") AU 0

Nathan Coe made a few fans nervous by venturing way off his line down towards the corner but Adelaide was not able to manufacture a shot from the distance or angle.

    23.00 - MV 1 (Barbarouses 14") AU 0

Zullo now goes in the book for bringing down Troisi with a heel tap in midfield.

    13.30 - MV 1 AU 0

    GOAL!

    Victory 1-0 with a Barbarouses tap-in!

Adama Traore won the ball on the left and after a quick series of passes the ball was played down the left flank for James Troisi.

Troisi had time to run to the edge of the area and slide a pefect cross into the six-yard area for Barbarouses to finish!

Silver service from Troisi gives Barbarouses his first goal in Victory colours!

    13.00 - MV 0 AU 0

Game over for Cassio. He is subbed out and Steven Lustica comes on.

It means a tactical switch on the park with Zullo moving to the more familiar surrounds of left back to replace Cassio and Lustica into the middle.

    12.00 - MV 0 AU 0

It looks like a hamstring for Cassio but the physio is going to take him through some stretches.

Josep Gombau isn't going to risk playing with 10 for too long and has Steven Lustica warming up.

    11.00 - MV 0 AU 0

Cassio is sore but able to run to the bench. The physio is looking at his right leg on the sidelines.

He takes it as well...headed away from the near post by Isaias.

    7.30 - MV 0 AU 0

Troisi is given space to hit a through ball for the forwards but there's too much power on it and Galekovic is able to collect unchallenged.

    6.30 - MV 0 AU 0

    1.00 - MV 0 AU 0

Scrappy opening. Milligan gives away a free kick as Melbourne presses up to an Adelaide throw-in.

    KICK-OFF - MV 0 AU 0

Melbourne Victory start the match attacking the Coventry End or left-of-screen.

Victory is in its home kit of navy blue shirts with a white V, navy shorts with a white trim and navy and white striped socks.

Adelaide United is not wearing the red despite no clash and has opeted for its white away kit.

Ben Williams is the referee tonight.

The players waited in the tunnel for quite a while but have now been given the all-clear to walk out onto Etihad.

The Kosmina-Muscat Trophy and Kosmina-Muscat Medal for the winning team and best player respectively are up for grabs tonight. It's not the silverware that clubs strive for but will still be a welcome addition to the trophy cabinet, along with the three points, if there is a winning team tonight.

Almost kick-off time now. The seats are still in at Etihad Stadium but the crowd is not quite at blockbuster proportions.

Jason Geria's total absence from the match-day squad has raised some eyebrows. Geria has gone from starting at right back to not even making the bench. Leigh Broxham will play there tonight. Victory's NYL team plays against Adelaide in Adelaide tomorrow. It will be interesting to see what role, if any, Geria plays in that game.

It's all happening up in Sydney. Ranko Despotovic knocks in the winner in the fourth minute of stoppage time for Sydney FC. Wellington can't score from a corner and the full-time whistle puts an end to the game. It means Sydney FC will hold third spot tonight regardless of the result in the Victory-Adelaide game.
