"Don't you ever let a chance go by" was the chorus of the famous Newcastle Song from the 70s. Alas for Newcatsle, the boys in green and brown couldn't heed the classic tune's message, squandering a couple of golden opportunities that would have seen them edge past their Sydney rivals. The culprits, Burns and Taggart, had played well up until their misses (Taggart's was particularly embarrassing), but the Sky Blues were much more lethal in the box, and killed off Newcastle through excellent strikes by Despotovic and the ever improving Chianese. Frank Farina will be pleased his men can win without ADP - this was their fourth on the trot, a club record - and he'll be even more pleased with the form of his defence which gave Newcastle nothing in the second half. Gary van Egmond will think his team were unlucky, especially considering they dominated the first half, but the way they capitulated in the second stanza, will give him sleepless nights this week. All up, a tremendous night for the boys in Sky Blue.

    85th minute:

Oooh... that looked close. Abbas curled a 20m freekick inches wide of the right-side of the woodwork. Actually, it missed by a long, long way, but you get the sense he'd love to score against his old club.

    SFC 2 Jets 0

    82nd minute:

Taggart has been kept quiet this half, and apart from Burns' missed sitter, the men in green and brown have gone missing up front this stanza.

    SFC 2 Jets 0

    76th minute:

Frank Farina makes another substitution: Thomspon off for McFlynn, whose mega Movember moustache has a touch of the Ned Flanders about it. Spiffing.

    SFC 2 Jets 0

    71st minute:

The 2-goal buffer has enabled Sydney to play with a lot more panache. Abbas and Chianese are linking well now and Newcastle's advances from midfield are being shut down before they get to the box. They've been forced into lateral manoeuvres, which aren't troubling the Sky Blue defence at all. Crowd is 14,803: my 15,000 estimate wasn't too shabby after all.

    SFC 2 Jets 0

    67th minute:

Farina pulls Naumoff off and brings on Yau. The Sutherland Sharks junior has had a strong game.

Hey, I just realised, the Sky Blues are winning without ADP. Who'da thunk it?

    SFC 2 Jets 0

    64th minute:

Can the Jets come back? Nathan Burns missed a sitter prior to Despotovic's strike that would have made it 1-1. Sydney FC haven't had as many chances but they've buried the ones they've had. They're sitting back a bit now, absorbing the Jets' attack and breaking on the counter thanks to Chianese, who is giving young Jake Pepper a hard time down that right side.

    SFC 2 Jets 0

    56th minute:

A great double save by Birighitti keeps out Garcia and Despotovic headers from close range. Sydney on the rampage.

    SFC 1 Jets 0

    51st minute:

Matt Jurman has been very solid at the back for Sydney. His longer balls are finding Chianese in acres of space on the right side. He also spoilt a promising Newcastle attack by outmuscling Taggard in the air so that the Newcastle striker's header sped well wide of the goal.

    SFC 1 Jets 0

    48th minute:

Chianese is growing in confidence after his first half strike. His first run in the second stanza split the Jets' defence down the right wing - the ensuing cross caused mayhem in the penalty area. Good signs for the Sky Blues as the Cove's singing ramps up a notch.

    SFC 1 Jets 0

A half dominated by the Jets, with Zadkovich, Burns and Taggart outstanding, was turned on its head when Chianese scored a smart striker's goal with only minutes remaining. Prior to that excellent finish, Sydney were stumbling through the game unable to maintain any rhythm. They will, however, gain momentum and confidence from the scoreline, though Frank Farina will be praying his charges can hold the fort without ADP. Gary van Egmond, meanwhile, will be asking for more of the same from his men, but conceding a goal only minutes from halftime can't be good for morale. He'll be hoping Burns can unlock the Sky Blue defence more often for Heskey and Taggart to convert. Time for a beverage. Catch you in five,

    SFC 1 Jets 0

    44th minute:

Once again I've been showed up as a football muppet! Against the run of play Sydney have scored, after a searing cross from Abbas on the left was attacked with extreme prejudice by Chianese who left his marker and cracked home from 10m. What a first touch that was from Chianese! The Jets can't believe it.

    SFC 1 Jets 0

    42nd minute:

Terrible news for Sydney: ADP has limped off with an injury. And to add insult, to, well, injury, he was carded for not consulting the ref. Last week's match-winner Radko Despotovic comes on.

    SFC 0 Jets 0

    39th minute:

Biffo! A bit of argy-bargy between Heskey and Matt Thompson. The big Jets forward was brought down by Thommo, and the Sky Blue offered his apology by patting Heskey on the noggin. He didn't like it one bit, and the ref had to pull them apart. The crowd is loving it...

    SFC 0 Jets 0

    35th minute:

What a howler from Birighitti. The Jets keeper came out to collect a Chianese through-ball but completely missed it. Luckily for the Jets it flew passed the goal.

    SFC 0 Jets 0

    31st minute:

Nathan Burns has pace to burn down the left flank. He's really troubling the Sydney defence, especially Ryall. Newcastle's attack and general play is pretty to watch at the mo.

    SFC 0 Jets 0

    26th minute:

Sydney find some oopmh in attack at last. Nicky Carle finished off a buccaneering run down the left flank with a neat ball to Chianese whose first touch let him down. That's better from the men in Sky Blue.

    SFC 0 Jets 0

    22nd minute:

The Jets were lethargic the first time they played the Sly Blues earlier this year, but tonight they're really sparking up. Zadkovich's gleaming bald head is everywhere, he is a real powerhouse and Taggart is dangerous whenever he gets the ball. The Sky Blues haven't got their rhythm happening so far. Even ADP, God forbid, is slightly out of sorts. Early days yet though.

    SFC 0 Jets 0

    13th minute:

Useless piece of trivia #1: Sydney FC have never won a round 8 match since the inception of the A-league.

Gee Zadkovich is a powerful striker of a dead ball. He absolutely smashed a corner goal-bound and Janjetovic took two attempts to pluck it out of the air safely. And here goes Taggart shooting - as he falls to the ground - at Janjetovic, after outpacing the Sky Blue defence. ADP had given the ball away in his own half - somewhat casually, I might add. The Jets have had the better of the play so far.

    SFC 0 Jets 0

    10th minute:

A measured ball from Garcia released Chianese into open space on the edge of the box but his final shot was straight at Birighitti who dealt with it easily. If Chianese had fired his shot further infield there were men in Sky Blue ready to pounce.

    SFC 0 Jets 0

    7th minute:

Already Seb Ryall is powering for the Sky Blues. He's having a great season - his ball distribution is immaculate. But the best opportunity so far has come to Newcastle with Zadkovich smashing a 30m freekick inches over the crossbar. Both midfields are putting together enterprising moves.

    SFC 0 Jets 0

    3rd minute:

Lots of slipping and sliding around in the opening encounters. And one of those unruly slides - a late one by Nicky Carle on Adam Taggart - brings a yellow card. That's his fourth booking of the season. It's a comfortable 20 degrees tonight, so I'm not quite sure what all the falling over is about...

    SFC 0 Jets 0

Here's Sun Herald football writer Dominic Bossi's latest news on the line-ups...

Sydney FC coach Frank Farina has made two changes to this starting line-up from last week's thrilling 2-1 win over Wellington Phoenix, both of them forced upon him. Matt Thompson returns in place of Brett Emerton - who sustained a knee injury in the dying moments of lastweek's win - and defender Matt Jurman makes his first start in place of the suspended Predrag Bojic.
There was an air of confidence outside the stadium as Sydney FC fans were eyeing their fourth win in succession, which would become a new club record. Though standing in their way is a full strength Newcastle Jets team, which will include an intimidating attack consisting of Emile Heskey, Nathan Burns and the league's leading goalscorer, Adam Taggart.

    Welcome to another A-League blockbuster.

But before I go any further, I have a confession to make: as a young boy I stood behind the goals at the International Sport Centre supporting the once-mighty Newcastle KB United, so please excuse any bias. I hope it's balanced by the fact I've spent the last 20 years living in Sydney, following the many different first-tier clubs this city has thrown up during that time.

Anyway, tonight promises to be huge. Both Newcastle and Sydney are on three-match winning streaks after indifferent starts to the season. The Jets started their campaign poorly - against Sydney FC - but with gun striker Adam Taggart hitting form - he scored the first hattrick of the season last week in the Jets' demolition of the Heart - they've become the League's surprise achievers. They'll have Emile Heskey starting up front with him for the first time this season, so expect fireworks in front of goal for the men in cinnamon and emerald (The Jets away strip colours, based on the old "KB"teams from the '80s).

The Sky Blues have shown great character in recent weeks, carving out two of their three victories with only 10 men. Naturally, Alessandro Del Piero has been key, but the likes of Richie Garcia and Ali Abbas have also come into their own. They've had a bit of bad news prior to the game, with Brett "Emmo" Emerton ruled out with a calf injury - he will be replaced by Matty Thompson.

There's a good crowd tonight at Allianz: 15,000-plus, and the Cove is already in fine voice. There's also a small but vocal section of Jets supporters. The captains have assembled for the toss. Here we go...
