Live A-League: Sydney FC v Brisbane Roar

    Richard Shute

    Sort posts by:

FULL-TIME: So, a seven goal cracker here at Allianz, with the best team in the league running out emphatic - and deserved - winners.

Petratos will take the bulk of the headlines, but it was Broich, Brattan and McKay who made Sydney hurt the most.

Sydney were much better in the second half, with Gameiro looking sharp and combining well with Garcia in the absence of Del Piero who again went off at halftime.

Farina will have to answer some tough questions tonight - sure Brisbane are the best in the business, but shipping 5 at home - and it could have been worse - is not a good look for the harbour team, who have had a very wobbly December after rallying in the previous month.

Janjetovic was excellent for the home side, and kept the scoreline from getting REALLY embarrassing. Plenty for Sydney to work on - and the DVD won't make pleasant viewing.

An excellent turnout, and full credit to the Sky Blues' fans who sung to the end.

Cheers all, and see you next time.

GOAL: Richard Garcia has just pulled one back with 30 seconds to go after an epic mixup in the Roar defence, with Theo slamming into Broich and fumbling into the path of the FC player. He blasts into the empty net. And that's the whistle. SYDNEY 2 ROAR 5

GOAL: And that's the fifth. Franjic ghosts into the box, Janjetovic saves, and Franjic hits exactly the same shot in past the near post with the keeper eating grass. Great ball from Petratos. SYDNEY 1 ROAR 5

That's why DBoss gets paid the big bucks...

We'll have three minutes of injury time here. SYDNEY 1 ROAR 4

Borrolla almost makes it five, but is foiled by the offside flag (correct) and the palm of Janjetovic (excellent.)

Excellent build-up play from the Sky Blues at the other end, but it culminates in Bojic scooping the ball into row Z. Gets an ironic cheer...

Five minutes to go here, as Yeboah wastes a chance to sign off on a high. It was three on one, and he drags a lazy shot wide across Janjetovic. Very ordinary from a player who normally blasts them into the top corner from that kind of possession.

Yeboah has 6 minutes left in the A-League before he is off to Germany. He'd love a farewell goal. He replaced Luke Brattan, who was typically excellent in the Roar midfield.

On comes Kwame Yeboah. Can he score another highlight reel cracker?

Petratos fancies a fourth for his personal tally and snatches at one just behind him on the cut-back. It hits the side netting. With the retaken penalty, and the Henrique handball, Janjetovic has picked the ball out of the back of his net six times tonight, despite having a decent game!

GOAL: Petratos finally gets his deserved hat-trick, hitting the pen to Janjetovic's right. He has actually scored three pens tonight - but one was retaken. Sydney FC are going to be sick of the returning man.... SYDNEY 1 ROAR 4

PENALTY! Broich springs the offside trap, and FC are ten yards behind the ball. Brattan finds Broich. Petkovic charges into Broich a he chests the ball, and it's a clear pen.

The Roar are back on top, but are refusing to shoot. They are trying to walk it in, and it's not quite happening. There is at least one more goal in this.... SYDNEY 1 ROAR 3

Janjetovic again denies Petratos his hat-trick with a save at full stretch to deny a curling left footed drive. That would have been some way to get his third. It needed to be a bit closer to the post, but the technique and transfer of balance were excellent.

So, there are just under 20 minutes to go here tonight, and it's Sydney FC who look the more likely to score at the moment. It looks as if it's a symptom of the scoreline. The Roar are not going in for the kill, and to be honest, it is probably not going to hurt them too much. They are staying on top of the pile.

Henrique off, Borello on. The little Brazilian put in a good shift, but couldn't buy a goal tonight.

Michael Theo is having a cracking night. He pushes one around the post from a diving Ryall header off a free-kick. Mulvey about to ring the changes.

For all the ball, however, the home side are getting no joy or penetration. Brisbane are defending well, closing down space and limiting the options forward. They will quite happily watch the Sky Blues play backwards and sideways....

Sydney have had their best possession spell of the night in the last 10 minutes. Mulvey needs to shake something up.

Some gallows humour from one of the boys in the office...

Brisbane have taken their foot off the gas, and the Sky Blues are edging back into the contest. Another orange goal would kill it....

Superb run from Richard Garcia up the middle. he is felled by Matt McKay, and the ball squirts to Gameiro with the ref waving play on. It's low and hard on the wet grass, but Theo dives low to save well. Great stuff from the Sky Blues. Much more dynamic.

Yau on, Emerton off for Sydney.

Henrique stumbles into the box under the challenge of Petkovic, and Janjetovic dives in to smother again. If Henrique had gone to ground, that could easily have been given...

Sydney continuing to back off in defence, but the Roar are playing balls into the box instead of hitting speculative efforts from outside. Broich may fancy a crack at some point though..

The Roar are building nicely from the back, with the wing-backs picking the pass to the midfield. Big contrast to the Sky Blues hitting long diagonals from the back. Balls to feet always going to be better. SYDNEY 1 ROAR 3 57 gone.

Henrique Maradona-s it into the net, but it's picked up, and will be a free-kick to Sydney FC. In off the arm.

The rain is starting to hammer down. That's gonna make the ball skip off the surface. Janjetovic has actually had a decent game so far tonight, but that ain't gonna help matters....

Brisbane have started this half in the same manner as they went in at halftime. Unhurried possession play in the middle third, before snapping into quick pass and move to penetrate the defence. Very patient, very Wengerish.....

POST! Matt McKay beats Janjetovic low to the left, and it comes back off the base of the post. Almost 4-1. I'd say anything above 5-1 could well cost Farina his job - not alone, but in context of 9 of the rounds this year, not to mention last.....

Just imagine what Besart Berisha would be doing to this static defence.

GROUNDHOG DAY: Alessandro Del Piero only lasts 45 minutes again. Corey Gameiro has replaced the marquee man at halftime. Surely he can't get another year playing three halves a month?

Aaaand we're back. The stadium is still rocking, to the credit of the home fans.

Well, that was pretty brutal for FC fans - the home side were absolutely dominated here in the first half of the Boxing Day clash.

The Sky Blues took the lead completely against the run of play, with Alessandro Del Piero scoring a magnificent free-kick off his own foul.

It wasn't to last long, however, with Thomas Broich getting on the end of a Brattan daisy-cutter.  Dimi Petratos made it two from a re-taken penalty after Seb Ryall tap-tackled Henrique in the box at the end of a ten-yard wrestle, and then  helped himself to another on the end of a fabulous passing move with that man Broich involved again.

Mike Mulvey's side are playing the game in between two very flat lines of the Sydney mid/defence, and making the home side look second class.

One of the big worries for Sydney is their apparent lack of a plan B - against the Heart they were a stubbed toe away from a draw, and had nothing to trouble the Phoenix after going behind. After a horrible start to the season, they rallied with a few flattering results, but the proof of the pudding is not so good at the moment.

Expect another couple from the Roar tonight, with a scoreline to make Farina very nervous about his position.....

Petratos! Denied his first half hat-trick by a good save from Janjetovic, who is out sharply to smother at the youngster's feet.

It's not a good one. Wasted, and cleared for a throw. The difference between the cutting edge here is stark.

Sydney have a useful corner on the right. All the big men trot in.

Bojic flashes a dangerous ball across the box, but it's behind Despotovic and too quick for ADP. The Sky Blues fire up. A goal before halftime would make things really interesting...

Sydney are almost at the point of damage limitation here. Unless Farina has a masterplan, they cannot live with Mulvey's boys tonight.

The speed with which Brisbane are breaking is making the FC defence look absolutely stuck in the mud. Del Piero over-hits a ball towards Emerton into touch. Bad to worse for FC fans....

WHAT A GOAL! Petratos has his second, after some Barcelona-esque pass and move football around the box. Broich finds him on the one-two and Petratos fires into the top right. Unbelievable. Could be five goals in this one for the Roar tonight. SYDNEY 1 ROAR 3

So, a quiet period here after that manic five minutes when the game was turned upside-down. We have just over ten minutes until halftime, and Frank Farina will be hoping it goes by without incident. He needs to make some changes here, tighten up the midfield and get someone on Broich, stat.

Luke Brattan enters the ref's book for dragging back Del Piero - pretty unnecessary to be honest. Brattan is enjoying the time and space tonight, that's a silly one though. SYDNEY 1 ROAR 2 - 32 minutes gone.

So, half an hour gone here, and a lot of the boxes have been ticked. We've had some controversy, some excellent finishing, goals galore, and some excellent possession play from the visitors. They are tearing the Sky Blues apart here. The way things are going, not even a couple of flashes of ADP magic can save the day. He's almost had his 45 minutes anyway.....

Seb Ryall blocks one in the box! Liam Miller threads a beaut of a pass to Henrique in the six yard box, and Ryall flung himself into harm's way to save the day.

Petratos goes left again, and blasts it high into the net this time. No chance for Janjetovic, and it's a one minute turnaround! SYDNEY FC 1 ROAR 2

Petratos scores! But we'll retake as he hadn't waited for the whistle. Low to the left, beats Janjetovic... We'll go again!

UNBELIEVABLE! A minute later, and Roar have a penalty! Ryall takes down Henrique after a tussle......

GOAL: And it's arguably the best player in the league, Thomas Broich. He gets on the end of a defence-splitting pass from the ever-improving Luke Brattan. He has plenty of time to mess it up, but he sells the keeper, and slots into the bottom left corner. SYDNEY FC 1 ROAR 1

Ranko Despotovic is hungry to add to his growing tally, but no dice despite a brave effort.

Plenty of heat on Twitter about ADP diving for the free-kick that led to the goal. It was certainly theatrical, but Jade North did look to have his leg out from where I'm sitting. Will be interesting to see it again at halftime.

Great response from the Roar here, who are continuing to play their natural game - there is plenty of time to go here, and aside from the free-kick, they have been all over Sydney like a neon rash. The way Sydney are defending this summer, they know they will have their chances. Sydney still struggling to get a foot on the ball - and when they do, they are playing long balls from the back and gifting possession back to the Roar.

Sydney have had less than 20% possession here, but have the only stat that counts. That'll do wonders to settle them.

GOAL: Against the run of play, Alessandro Del Piero smashes in the free-kick, low and hard to the bottom right, just past Theo's fingertips. What will they do without him? SYDNEY 1 ROAR 0

That's a bit better from Sydney. Del Piero twists and turns on the edge of the box, goes down, juggles the ball in between two defenders on the floor, gets the wrong side of them, before Jade North fells him a second time. Free-kick in a dangerous area, right in front, ADP range...

Bojic misjudges a bounce in the area, and Dimitri Petratos gets a flash of a chance in the box. It's a tough angle, and Petratos forgets he isn't Marco Van Basten, and smashes high and wide. No need for the shot - there were better options arriving. Nothing much for the Cove to sing about so far, but they seem unperturbed. SYDNEY FC 0 ROAR 0 - 9 minutes gone.

Sydney are defending very flat here at Allianz, and Brisbane are starting to find room in between the midfield and defence with quick movement and good old triangles.

So, a pretty tame start here, with the Roar knocking the ball about with little intent other than to settle. Early chance for Henrique, with a quick one-two seeing the little man get a half chance on the fringe, but he can't control the ball, and it comes to nothing.

ROAR: Theo (GK), Smith, North, Donachie, Franjic, Brattan, McKay, Petratos, Miller, Broich, Henrique

SYDNEY FC: Janjetovic, Ryall, Bojic, Abbas, Petkovic, Thompson, Emerton, Carle, Despotovic, Del Piero, Garcia

And it took ten seconds for the first whistle, with Roar winning an instant free-kick. Dry and balmy here tonight, with Broich looking to have a roving false 9 role for the Roar - not sure it's the way to go, but will be interesting for sure in the absence of Berisha.

So, we're just a few minutes from kick-off here at Allianz, with both teams desperate to bounce back from unlikely losses last week. Sydney FC boast the best home record in the A-League, while the visitors have the best record on the road. The Sky Blues have only dropped 4 points in the last 13 games at home, while the Roar will be looking to knock over their 100th win in the league's history, and become the first team to do so. Both managers will be keen to take the full 3 points tonight, so expect 3 or more goals, and plenty of passion - despite the absence of one fiery Albanian...

    Allianz Stadium

    Kick-off: 7.30pm

    Referee: Ben Williams

    TV: Live, Fox Sports 1

    Radio: 702 ABC Sydney

Odds: Sydney $3.30, Draw $3.40, Brisbane $2.05 (TAB)

    Twitter: #SFCvBRI

Sydney FC (4-2-3-1, L-R): Janjetovic; Abbas, Petkovic, Ryall, Bojic; Emerton, Carle; Naumoff, Del Piero, Garcia; Despotovic.

Brisbane Roar: (4-3-3. L-R): Theo; Brown, Smith, North, Hingert; McKay, Brattan, Miller; Broich, Henrique, Franjic.

    1. Alessandro Del Piero (Sydney FC): In his absence against Wellington Phoenix last week, Sydney struggled for creativity and there was a lack of communication between the midfield and forward lines. His return is timely for the dipping form of the Sky Blues.

    2. Kwame Yeboah (Brisbane Roar): Fresh after signing with Bundesliga club Borussia Monchengladbach, Yeboah returns just in time to play Sydney FC in what will be one of his last games in a Roar jersey. The young striker will probably start on the bench but that is usually where he's at his most dangerous - just ask the Mariners and Wanderers.

    3. Luke Brattan (Brisbane Roar): Perhaps the lowest in profile of the Roar's three central players, Brattan is becoming one of the A-League's most consistent deep midfielders. He has even been favoured on set pieces ahead of marquee man Thomas Broich.

    4. Ranko Despotovic (Sydney FC): Sydney's newest signing is establishing himself as one of their most important players with three goals in five games to his name. He was one of the few notable performers in the 1-0 loss to Wellington last week.

    5. Ivan Franjic (Brisbane Roar): Since being deployed in a more attacking role under Mike Mulvey, Franjic has blossomed into one of the A-League's best right-sided players.

Nikola Petkovic (Sydney) v Henrique (Brisbane)

There couldn't be more of a contrast than Sydney's imposing centreback and Brisbane's nimble striker but the clash between the two will probably decide the game. Henrique will spearhead the Roar's attack in the absence of the injured Besart Berisha and will come up against the league's form defender.

    Frank Farina (Sydney FC)

After reviving Sydney's hopes this season with a club record four-game winning streak, Farina could find himself coming under scrutiny once again should he lose to the Roar. Given that Sydney's last two performances have been lacklustre to say the least, a third successive poor display could witness the ire of the ever-demanding Sydney FC fans.

    Mike Mulvey (Brisbane Roar)

After losing 2-0 to Newcastle Jets last week in a match they dominated from start to finish, the Roar coach will be itching to bounce back and prevent the A-League leaders flirting with a form slump. The Roar have won four of their past five games against Sydney but Mulvey is yet to win at Allianz Stadium.
