FULL-TIME: That's a cracking result for Sydney FC, who scored the equaliser with ten men on the pitch, having watched Nicky Carle depart after picking up a second yellow.

Adelaide will be disappointed that they couldn't hold on, let alone land a killer blow.

They are now in a full blown injury crisis, with Cirio, Djite and Ferreira adding to physio's workload. The youngsters Mabil and Costa were a nuisance, but lacked composure and both missed chances to decide the game.

For the Sky Blues, Petkovic, Garcia and Gameiro were excellent. A big point for Sydney FC, and a big psychological boost.

Two points dropped for Adelaide, who need to practise crossing the ball. Stat.

Mabil does well to keep the ball under pressure, and slips a pass through to Barker-Daish. He hits an optimistic effort from 40 yards into the stands with men on his right. Miles over.

Malik gets a yellow for timewasting. Unnecessary, they are on the attack.

Sydney are living very dangerously here, giving the ball away repeatedly, inviting Adelaide to come at them. A symptom of some very tired legs and minds. Three added minutes to go here.

Now Adelaide butcher one down the right. Sydney again give the ball away cheaply, they back off, inviting Bowles to cross or shoot. He goes in between, and it's a goalkick. Two minutes to go, Adelaide pushing hard.

Gameiro almost scores the winner! He is played through by McFlynn, opens his body up to try and put it across Galekovic, but it's an easy save for the big man. Gameiro has had thre or four chances now since coming on.

Ok, this is getting ridiculous. Gameiro is away down the middle, but he overruns it, and Galekovic comes out to smother. This game is still wide open.

GOAL: Corey Gameiro! What a ball in from Petkovic. It curls in, and Gameiro glances it off the forehead across Galekovic. Unbelievable. The ball is in the bottom right hand corner, and we're evens again!

Here we go. Big chance for Sydney FC, with a free kick from the left. Petkovic to swing the ball in.

Sydney work hard to get back on the ball, but then McFlynn tries to pass through a red shirt. You can't give the ball away that easily with ten man.

So, about 13 minutes to go here, and unless Despotovic or Petkovic can pull something magic out of their respective hats, Frank Farina is looking down the barrel of another defeat. Lean times.

And that's the end of Del Piero's night - 76 minutes gone, McFlynn comes on for a rare cameo. He takes the captain's armband.

Del Piero is dispossessed easily by Malik on the edge of the box, and Adelaide break quickly. The home side threaten, and the lame Ferreira crosses into a blue shirt. The cry of 'penalty' goes up, but no chance. Ferreira is moving very gingerly still. Why is he still on the field?

Sydney are looking very frustrated - and tiring badly. There are some young legs stretching them here. More cards coming, I'd say. The Sky Blues have been punished tonight for their indiscipline.

Barker-Daish scores! 2-1 Adelaide United. Sydney have had an awful two minutes, and surely there is no coming back from this. Superb penalty to the right of Janjetovic. Gombau is roaring.

PENALTY: Jurman has been penalised for holding and bundling over Costa in the box!

Del Piero was going to be replaced just before the red card, but that changed sharpish. He is now playing in front of the back four. Sydney blunted.

Adelaide's horror injury run continues. It is now officially a crisis. Ferreira is moving very awkwardly. Surely he has got to come off. What is their lineup next week??

Emerton comes on, and Del Piero drops back deep. Adelaide surely must push on now. They'll have their chances to kill off the visitors for sure. It's just that final ball, and clinical finish that has been eluding them.

RED CARD: Nicky Carle clips Sanchez, who ran across him on the break. A bit unlucky, but that's a second yellow, and he is gone.

Now Gligor whips one in hard and low. This game has opened right up. Adelaide clear and go on the counter.

Warren puts in a dangerous looking cross into the box, but Malik clears. Petkovic played Warren in after some lovely patient holding play. What an asset...

Corey Gameiro is coming on for Richard Garcia, who has been hobbling for a minute or so. Sanchez seems to be ok to continue. Del Piero has lasted 66 minutes so far!

Now it's Sydney's turn to threaten, with Bojic forcing Galekovic into a save low down to his left. It was a lovely layback from Despotovic, but he didn't get the contact he wanted. Corner to Sydney.

The free-kick is harmless, but the ball pinballs around in the six-yard box. Bodies fly in from all angles, and Sydney clear. Comedy stuff there.

Yellow card: Bojic nails Ferreira, who was flying into the danger zone.

Another chance for Despotovic. His shot is blocked as he tried to make more space for himself when there was no need. He dallied unusually there. He is normally so quick to pull the trigger. He catches Isaias Sanchez on the lower leg with the follow-through. Another player down for Adelaide, and Ranko looking sore too.

Much better from the Sky Blues, who have really woken up here. Zullo slips up, and Bojic breaks down the right. He has loads of time, but puts in a ridiculous cross over everyone's heads. Tonight has been the tale of the awful final ball.

Del Piero finds Richard Garcia with a gorgeous lofted ball. He plays in Despotovic, who digs out a shot which is easily saved by Galekovic, who pushes the ball wide. First decent chance of the half for the visitors who have been a little overwhelmed since the restart.

Isaias Sanchez snatches at a half-volley, but it goes about 40 yards over the bar. Good work again from Mabil down the right - he will be some player if he continues to develop at this rate. Very unpolished at the moment though - all energy and enthusiasm, but no nuance.

That's now Costa and Mabil spurning good chances - you've got to think the men they replaced would have scored those.

Mabil skips through unchallenged down the left, but fluffs his lines something chronic. His control lets him down and Jurmann tidies up.

Zullo picks up where he left off and takes out Del Piero in a  clumsy challenge. He wont last long doing those under the ref's nose. He admitted it was a sign of his frustration in the halftime interview. He has made decent inroads down the flank, but has not delivered the final ball.

The second half kicks off in Adelaide. Should be a cracker.

HALF-TIME: All square at halftime here at Cooper's Stadium in a fascinating half of A-League football. The scoreline is about right, with both teams having their dominant periods. Adelaide have suffered two massive injury blows with Cirio and Djite both going off with muscle strains. Sydney have shown flashes of individual brilliance, with Del Piero, Garcia and Petkovic causing problems. Ranko Despotovic grows every round, and has almost nipped in a couple of times to add to his opener.

Adelaide look dangerous down the flanks, but the balls into the box have been predominantly ordinary. If they can pick out the red shirts, Sydney FC will have trouble living with them.

Join us shortly for a crucial 45 minutes in both teams' seasons.

Barker-Daish hits it straight to Janjetovic. Waste.

Mabil has been superb since he came on to replace Djite. He is causing all sorts down the right. He cuts inside instead of taking Jurmann on down the flank, and Nicky Carle cuts him in half. That's a yellow and a free-kick in a dangerous area. Trouble.

Horrible challenge from Zullo on Despotovic. He came straight through the striker from behind, nowhere near the ball and cleaned up Despotovic convincingly. That was a red for my money. Ref gives a yellow.

WHAT A HIT. As the second phase ball comes out, Petkovic picks up the ball going away from goal. He wraps his foot around it, and clips the crossbar with a stunner. Galekovic beaten by some distance. That would have been one of the goals of the season. Techniiiiiiique.

Drama. Despotovic is down on the ground, rolling around clutching his ankle. The striker squeezed between two defenders who hesitated, and was caught by the sharp Galekovic. Fair challenge, brave from Ranko. Sydney FC have a corner. Despotovic is up and running again.

Del Piero seems alright. He drops his shoulder, and flashes one past the post. Ten minutes to go until halftime here, with the honours even. ADELAIDE 1 SYDNEY FC 1

Young Anthony Costa thought Christmas had come again. He was put through up the middle, but hesitated and Petkovic came across and nabbed it off his toes. What a start that would have been for the youngster. He'll score those in a year or two.

It was only a matter of time. Del Piero went down heavily under a challenge, and is jogging around gingerly. Will he come back for a rare second half appearance tonight?

And Cirio is off, he goes straight down the tunnel, as Anthony Costa runs on for his debut. Big chance for the youngster tonight, with some unexpected game time.

Sergio Cirio tears down the left, but Petkovic shadows him patiently, and blocks the cross. Cirio goes down immediately clutching the hamstring. There was no contact,, it just went as he tried to burst past Petkovic. Another massive blow, following the removal of Djite.

Plenty of heat on Mark Warren for losing his man on that one. Definite questions over his positioning tonight.

What is Marc Warren doing? That's your man, mate. @SydneyFC

    — Daniel Meta (@danielmets) January 3, 2014

GOAL: And there it is, Fabio Ferreira scores from a diagonal ball in from Steven Lustica. It came off the second phase ball from the corner after the initial ball in was cleared. With all the time in the world, Ferreira guides the ball across Janjetovic into the far corner. Excellent cushioned volley. ADELAIDE 1 SYDNEY 1

Adelaide are looking dangerous down both flanks, but Sydney FC are managing to snuff out the threats for now. THey will be increasingly stretched as the game goes on, you'd think. Their best chance looks to be from a cross into the box from the byline. Sydney FC not giving up much in the middle of the park.

Massive blow for Adelaide, as Bruce Djite is replaced by Mabil. Just as he was finding form, he's crook again. So, with no Carrusca, no Neumann, and no Djite to contend with, Sydney FC's chances are on the up.

Fabio Ferreira takes it to the byline on the right, and clips a ball towards the back post, but it is too hard, and the ball goes out for a goalkick off the boot of the arriving support.

So, Sydney FC have the lead with 18 minutes played, but Adelaide have probably edged it so far. They are getting caught badly on the counter, and could do with dropping back a little - the two offsides have been slim, and the Sydney FC players were in daylight. Sydney will do well to hang on to this lead.

Another offside call as Sydney FC play the Adelaide high line almost perfectly. Del Piero puts Despotovic one on one with Galekovic, but the goalkeeper smothers. The whistle had gone though. ADELAIDE 0 SYDNEY 1

Zullo is pushing hard down the left touchline, but Sydney FC keep their discipline and play a good pressing game. Zullo gets frustrated and puts in a nothing cross along the ground which is easily cleared.

GOAL: Abbas finds Garcia all on his own down the left touchline on the counter. He spots Ranko Despotovic in the centre, and the striker gets across Zullo to glance the ball past Galekovic, and the ball bobbles in off Zullo. 5 starts, 4 goals for Ranko. Wow. ADELAIDE UNITED 0 SYDNEY FC 1

Great ball from Abbas to Del Piero, but the Italian is caught offside. Best opening so far for the visitors.

Nothing doing. It is easily cleared, but the red shirts will come again. The home side are playing keep-ball in the centre circle. As they do.... ADELAIDE UNITED 0 SYDNEY FC 0

Tidy work from Djite and Barker-Daish sees Adelaide cut Sydney open. They go wide right, and win the first corner of the night.

After a couple of blunt minutes on the ball, Sydney gift it back to the Reds who will play it out from the back. And now Djite gives it away, and Del Piero has a chance to run. Dodgy stuff from both sides in the middle in the opening exchanges.

So, it's a cautious start here in Adelaide, with Sydney on the ball, having played it all the way back to Janjetovic. Twice.

And we're off. Big game for the Sky Blues tonight, who are on a horrible run. They face an uphill battle tonight against an Adelaide side that is starting to add goals and points to possession and flair.

So, it's a windy 22 degrees here at Cooper Stadium. For the home side, there's no Carrusca or Neumann tonight, Barker-Daish comes in for his first start. For Sydney FC, Ryall is replaced by Jurmann, while Gligor makes a rare start. ADP will line up from the kickoff, while Brett Emerton is on the bench.

    FIVE TO WATCH

    1. Alessandro Del Piero (Sydney FC)

Claims he is fit for the trip but lasting 90 minutes remains unlikely. His back injury is clearly limiting his contributions. Still, he has not lost his goal sense.

    2. Bruce Djite (Adelaide)

Much-maligned since returning to the A-League, Djite might be about to turn the corner. With Jeronimo Neumann suspended, shoulders the attack again.

    3. Nicky Carle (Sydney FC)

Being played out of position as a holding midfielder, has been unable to impose himself at No.10. Will want a big 2014 to ensure Sydney offer a new contract.

    4. Jon McKain (Adelaide)

With Del Piero's penchant for drawing fouls and McKain's robust style, passionate exchanges with the ref are assured.

    5. Matt Jurman (Sydney FC)

Should get a run at central defence after seeing Seb Ryall go down at training. Deserves a solid run in the first team.
