Sydney will be very disappointed with that performance, not only with the loss but the way in which they played. Only one real clear cut chance, when Gameiro shot wide when he only had the keeper Reddy to beat mid-way through the second half. That now leaves Sydney with five consecutive matches without a win. Where to for Frank Farina from here?
The Mariners will be delighted with getting a win here away from home, they definitely had the better of the chances and deserved to go 1-0 when Mile Sterjovski scored. The Mariners now move into third on the ladder.
The Cove and most of the 16,000-strong crowd will be loathe to admit it, but there only deserved to be one winner here tonight, and that was the Central Coast Mariners. Thanks very much for joining us tonight, and we will see you again soon!
Less than a minute left and Mariners keeper Liam Reddy has barely been tested in the second half, except for Gameiro's attempt. And now a few Sydney fans are letting their displeasure known, starting to boo. Who are they booing? The team, or Frank Farina? Or Both?
And that's it! The Mariners win 1-0!
Del Piero goes for magic switch from the right hand side to the left hand side but has too much on it, and it goes out for a Mariners throw. Only a handful of minutes left for Sydney to create something.
Del Piero gets chopped down by Montgomery, and he's lucky to escape a Yellow there. But Del Piero has a free kick from 40 metres out and it goes straight into the wall, and that about sums it up for Sydney...
83 minutes in and it's hand bags at 10 paces! Simon collapses on a Sydney player as the player is getting up, what was he trying to do there? Sparks off a bit of a brouhaha, but the referee calms it down.
And Duke gets a chance! Sydney lose possession inside their own box and Duke had an opportunity to put it on beyond doubt, but doesn't get anywhere near the type of shot on it that he'd like and it sprays wide.
Still 1-0 to the Mariners, and I'd be very surprised if Sydney manage to grab an equaliser, let alone pull a win out of the hat...
#aleague 16k at Allianz Stadium. Not bad at all. — Crowdiegal (@crowdiegal) January 18, 2014
Yellow card! McFlynn cops a yellow, going for a header along with Caceres but is just a bit late on it.
And Fitzgerald comes off for the Mariners and Duke comes on. Changes coming thick and fast by both teams now.
Sydney have now less than 20 minutes to make something happen. And Ibini for the Mariners makes an immediate impact, just inside the box fires a shot but it crashes into the side netting.
Substitution! Sydney FC make a couple of changes. Marc Warren taken off for midfielder Joel Chianese, and Nicky Carle for new Serbian signing Milos Dimitrijevic, who is making his A-League debut. Will this injection of fresh legs liven Sydney up?
And the goalscorer Sterjovski comes off for the Mariners, replaced by Bernie Ibini.
Foul! 60 minutes in and Sterjovski fouled, free kick to the Mariners just inside Sydney FC's half. The game has come alive again!
Mariners lead 1-0! Socceroos veteran Sterjovski finally gets it! Sterjovski shoots just outside the box, it gets a deflection and shoots out of Janjetovic's reach! You'd have to say the Mariners do deserve that, with all the chances they've had.
Chance to Sydney FC! By far the best chance of the game for them, the Mariners were caught napping at the back with Gameiro getting a great through ball, and he scuffs it wide of the post. I don't know if that miss or the one by Fitzgerald was worse!
54 minutes in and not much to report at this point, a lot of play in midfield with both teams losing possession easily, neither 'keeper being threatened.
Niggly fouls and poor set pieces have typified the second half so far. Who can break the deadlock? At this rate neither team looks like they have what it takes.
Free kick 30 metres from the goal line! And Del Piero makes a meal of it, comes off the outside of his boot and it sails harmlessly (for the Mariners) wide of the goal.
So the Mariners kick off the second half. Melbourne Heart are the only team to have scored less goals than the Mariners this season, and going by their poor finishing in the first half it's not hard to see why, they really should be 3-0 up!
And the answer is, no they can't, it remains 0-0. The Mariners definitely had more of the opportunities that half, and they'll be pretty disappointed to go into the sheds without a goal. Sydney improved as the half went on, and were only just denied by a (correct) off side call. The Mariners had three golden opportunities, with arguably the best being Fitzgerald's blast over the bar in the 36th minute when he only had the keeper Janjetovic to beat. He won't want to watch replays of that miss. My prediction is that the Mariners will eventually get one into the old onion bag and be too strong for Sydney, but it's still anyone's game!
Join us in a few minutes for the second half!
No additional time will be played this half, can Mariners or Sydney sneak a late one?
Chance for Abbas! Sydney looked dangerous there, Despotovic made a nice run and got it to an unmarked Abbas, and that's a good save by Reddy, stretching his legs to keep it out. That should give Sydney a bit more confidence.
Del Piero has a half hearted goal attempt from outside the box, but straight at Reddy who collects it easily.
And now Fitzgerald has an absolutely GOLDEN opportunity! Long ball to him and he's on side, has a one-on-one with Janjetovic and it sails way over the bar! Did he have too much time? Either way, that's a horrible attempt. Mariners now have had 9 goal attempts...
35 minutes gone and the score is still 0-0 here at Allianz Stadium, the Mariners have had more opportunities but after the goal that very nearly was, Sydney look a bit more threatening.
GOAL to Sydney FC! But hang on, no it's not! Called off side! Despotovic so very nearly timed his run perfectly, but probably the right call there, Sydney would have dearly loved that!
It's 29 minutes in and The Cove is definitely boisterous, but you'd have to say it's been a pretty insipid display so far from Sydney FC. Maybe they can score against the run of play?
Matt my friend, that was horrendous #SYDvCCM #ALeague — Chris (@chrisoh14) January 18, 2014
Another chance! Matt Simon in the action again, this time gets a free header at the six-yard box and he doesn't even test the keeper, doesn't get anywhere near the amount of power or direction he would want and it flies wide. That's the Mariners' sixth goal attempt.
Yellow Card! Matt Simon cops a yellow there for a reckless challenge on Petkovic, going for the ball but that looked ugly!
Offside! Runs from midfield by the Mariners causing Sydney a lot of problems tonight, nice through ball, Sydney lucky to get away with that one otherwise it would have been another one-on-one opportunity with the keeper!
Groans of frustration from the Cove there with Sydney losing possession again, compounding the fact that the Mariners have enjoyed 68% of possession so far, I'm reliably informed.
Half chance! Lovely skills from Fitzgerald, twists around some Sydney FC defenders inside the box and gets a nice pass to Sterjovski, who is under pressure and fires it into the far post.

Chance! Josh Rose gets a lovely through ball from Fitzgerald and it's one-on-one with the keeper Janjetovic, and that's a poor finish, first touch let him down and he ended up firing it straight into the keeper and it goes out for a corner.
Corner taken but the Mariners cough up possession easily. Rose will be kicking himself for wasting that opportunity!
McFlynn sends a long pass searching for Marc Warren who is flying up the left wing but it's too heavy and there's another goal kick to the Mariners.
We've had 4 corners in the opening seven minutes, and now it's Sydney FC's turn again. Del Piero takes a short one, flat delivery by Del Piero and Despotovic almost gets to it but is under pressure from Reddy and it goes out off Despotovic for a goal kick.
And now it's a corner to the Mariners. Sterjovski fires it in and there's a free header chance! But Gameiro is perfectly placed on the goal line and it flies away safely.
Corner to Sydney FC, to be taken by Iraqi midfielder Ali Abbas. McFlynn loops a ball in trying to find Del Piero but it goes out for a goal kick.
Del Piero cuts back a looping cross and Carle connected a volley into the far post from a tough angle. Good to see Carle immediately into the action straight away.
Sydney FC kick off!
The referee is Peter O'Leary, officiating in his 54th A-League match.
The pitch is in pristine condition, shadows are lengthening over Alliance Stadium and after a warm day the temperature has dropped to 24 degrees, should be a great night for football!
From everyone at #CCMFC congratulations to Brett Emerton on a fantastic career for Club & Country. Great sendoff. #WeAreFootball #ALeague — CentralCoastMariners (@CCMariners) January 18, 2014
The crowd is giving an emotional send off to the recently-retired Sydney FC and Socceroos defender Brett Emerton, thanks for the memories Emmo!
Good evening all, Alex Nicholson here and welcome to our coverage of tonight's Round 15 A-League clash between Sydney FC and the Central Coast Mariners from Allianz Stadium. Seventh-ranked Sydney FC will be desperate for a win after losing 1-0 in the dying minutes to fierce rivals the Western Sydney Wanderers last round, while the fourth-placed Mariners will also be extremely keen to notch up a win after missing a late penalty to draw 1-1 with the Wellington Phoenix.
Two players to watch are Sydney FC marquee man Alessandro Del Piero, who still has a lot to prove, and Mariners midfielder Anthony Caceres, who must step up in place of Mariners captain John Hutchinson, who is suspended.
