Live: Parramatta Eels v Cronulla Sharks

Jarryd Hayne gets the chocolates as man of the match and that's it from us tonight.  Be sure to grab tomorrow's Herald or log on to smh.com.au tomorrow for all the analysis from Michael Chammas.  We'll be back on Friday night to kick off round 14 when the table-topping Storm host the Tigers at AAMI Park.  Thanks for your company.

Tonight's loss keeps the Sharks in sixth heading into round 14.  Parramatta are still last but now just one win off 13th spot after the bye this coming week and, perhaps more importantly, will take some momentum into their clash with the Rabbitohs in a fortnight.

80 min: Chris Sandow takes the ball into the in-goal to wind the clock down before booting it into the crowd.  The Eels have just their second win of the season, and as a Manly fan that makes your humble blogger feel a bit better about the first.  Parramatta 29 Cronulla 20.  The Eels are celebrating but not making too much of it - they know there's a long way to go but surely they'll be over the moon inside.  Plenty of standouts for the Eels tonight but the man-of-the-match will be either Luke Burt or Ben Roberts for mine.

79 min: Wade Graham taken to ground near the Eels line and it's a turnover with seconds to play.

The Eels should get one more crack before the fat lady sings.

78 min: Cronulla go the short kick-off and it goes straight to Joseph Paulo for the Eels.

77 min: FIELD GOAL to Chris Sandow.  One more for the differential, keeps the ball away from the Sharks, and now the Eels lead 29-20.

75 min: Colin Best spills it for the Sharks and this will be a golden opportunity for the Eels to add another.

75 min: Fuifui held up over the line on the fourth tackle.

74 min: Another bust from Sio and Parramatta have six more tackles.

Four second-half tries to Parramatta have turned this contest on its head, and may just have saved Stephen Kearney's coaching career.

Burt extends the lead to eight.  28-20 with six minutes to go.  Still time for the Sharks but my money's on the Eels scoring again.

71 min: That's the game.  TRY to Jarryd Hayne.  Sio makes the break down the right flank before passing inside to Hayne who scores just to the right of the sticks.  Parramatta 26 Cronulla 20 with a kick to come.

Luke Burt looking to convert his second try from an almost identical position to the last and shaves the upright.  Score remains Parramatta 22 Cronulla 20 as we enter the final 10 minutes of the match.

69 min: TRY to the Eels.  Ryan Morgan runs close to the length of the field before offloading to Burt who scores his second in the corner.  Parramatta are back in the lead, 22-20 with a kick to come.  Looks like Morgan has been taken out after getting the pass away too.

No try ruled.  Eels scrum.

68 min: Colin Best spills it on the line, we're going upstairs to make sure he hasn't scored.  For the record, he's not even close.

68 min: Isaac de Gois held up over the line on the fourth tackle.

And that's a penalty to Cronulla.  Nathan Hindmarsh and Jarryd Hayne have been told to cool it as yet another referee cops a spray.

67 min: Sharks go wide to Isaac Gordon who is tackled metres out.

1337 words so far.  The nerds among us will know what I'm on about.

64 min: Ken Sio does well under a Carney bomb.  He's shone in a season Eels fans haven't found much to crow about in thus far but that could all change in the next 16 minutes.  Still no chance to the score, Sharks just ahead 20-18 with 15 minutes to play.

59 min: Matthew Wright takes a great catch under the high ball for the Sharks.

57 min: Penalty to the Sharks

It's an absolute role-reversal in this second half - the Eels have completed a perfect 10 of their sets thus far.

Burt adds the extras with a sensational effort from the sideline to convert his own try.  Only the early Sharks penalty goal the difference now as they lead 20-18.

53 min: TRY.  A lovely second-man play from Hayne sends Burt over in the corner and we've got a game on our hands here.  Sharks 20 Eels 16, kick to come.

52 min: Burt grubbers to the in-goal and the Sharks defence have no choice but to take it dead.  Line drop-out.

A different ball game in this second half as the Eels start to build some pressure of their own.  Another penalty has them just 15m out now.

50 min: Sharks concede a penalty for coming out of the line too quick.  Parra in good field position 45m out.

49 min: Carney's kick finds touch at the end of another completed Sharks set.  Smart play there to take the wind out of the Eels' sails somewhat.  Parramatta will have the feed 10m out from their own line.

PENALTY to the Sharks but Carney fails to find touch.  Shades of Origin I from the Cronulla playmaker.

45 min: Fuifui Moimoi cops a big shot from Ben Pomeroy who goes to ground himself.  Great stuff.

Burt lands the conversion and it's an eight-point game.  Sharks 20 Eels 12.

43 min: TRY.  Great start from the Eels.  Roberts' break sets it up before Parra shift right to Jarryd Hayne who steps off his right foot to score.  Sharks 20 Parramatta 10.  Kick to come.

42 min: Ben Roberts makes a bust up the middle for the Eels and is brought to ground 10m out from the Sharks' line on his way to earning a penalty.

41 min: Carney kicks early in the set and Jarryd Hayne brings it back from his 10m line.

40 min: Todd Carney kicks off and we're back in action for the second half.

No injuries to report from the first half.  Shane Flanagan is understandably delighted with his side's efforts there while Stephen Kearney has urged his players to play their way back into the match.  Control and simplicity the order of the night from the besieged coach.

Here's the Colonel's take on the opening 40 minutes.  Be sure to grab tomorrow's Herald or log on to smh.com.au to read his reports tomorrow:

Todd Carney is dictating terms at Parramatta Stadium. It's not as if the Eels are playing poorly, Carney is just not allowing them into the contest. He's kept Parramatta glued on their own goal-line, forcing the Eels to make more than 100 extra tackles than their opposition. His kicking game has been first class, forcing four goal-line drop-outs in the opening half. Ricky Stuart will be watching this hoping he can replicate it at ANZ Stadium next Wednesday night.

40 min: Halftime at Parramatta Stadium.  The Sharks are 14 points clear after having a mountain of possession and could be a lot further ahead than they are.  We'll be back in a few minutes with the halftime assessment from the chicken king, Michael Chammas.

37 min: Carney converts once again.  Cronulla 20 Parramatta 6 with two minutes before the break.

36 min: TRY.  Paul Gallen crashes over from dummy half and the pressure and possession is finally starting to tell.  Cronulla 18 Parramatta 6 with a kick to come.  Anyone got Parra Jesus on the line?  The Eels are going to need a miracle here.

35 min: Six again (again) for the Sharks after Luke Burt is ruled to have knocked on.  He's not happy, nor is Nathan Hindmarsh.

Yet another completed set from the Sharks there.  A coach's dream.

Change for Parra.  Matt Ryan off for Fuifui Moimoi.

31 min: Carney three from three.  Sharks 14 Parramatta 6.

30 min: TRY.  Isaac De Gois shimmies down the line with more dummies than a playgroup before finally giving it to Colin Best who crosses.  Sharks 12 Parramatta 6 with a kick to come.

29 min: PENALTY.  Hands in the play-the-ball and yet another shot for the Sharks.

28 min: Carney goes to Luke Burt's wing again who fields the kick well but is taken into touch.  Yet another repeat set for the Sharks, the Eels would be very happy to still be within two points for all the defending they've been forced to do.

Still no change to the score after 27 minutes, Sharks 8 Parramatta 6

Mitchell Allgood on for the Eels, Justin Poore takes his place on the bench.

The Sharks are yet to make an error.  13 from 13 sets completed.

25 min: Another set coming up for the Sharks.  Ryan Morgan makes a mess of it before recovering but he's taken in goal nonetheless.

23 min: Pomeroy drags Hayne back in goal and it's another line dropout from Parramatta.  Great pressure from Shane Flanagan's side.

22 min: Eels knock on just as they were starting to threaten and the Sharks are back in possession.

Eels get a penalty and Sandow makes good ground to begin their set 40m out from the Sharks' line.

21 min: Good work from Hayne who looks like he's knocked it on before getting out of the in-goal.

20 min: Sharks get another penalty.

18 min: Carney has dead-set shanked that kick and it's gone about 20m backwards.  What's doing?  Turnover on the 40m line.  Still, better now than next Wednesday.

18 min: Ben Pomeroy held up over the line and a little bit of a stink ends as soon as it began.

17 min: A forward pass from Hindmarsh just 20m out from his own line gives the Sharks a scrum feed and another opportunity.

Carney edges the Sharks back in front.  Cronulla 8 Parramatta 6 at the quarter-hour mark.

Try awarded.  All locked up at 6-6 but the Sharks have a kick to come.

13 min: TRY.  At least potentially.  Carney kicks for the corner on the last and it looks like Burt has knocked it forward for Isaac Gordon to grab the easiest try he'll ever score. In the hands of the video ref.

12 min: Another line dropout from the Eels after Luke Burt is forced to take a kick dead.

11 min: Good work from Carney earns the Sharks a line dropout and repeat set.

10 min: Jayson Bukuya almost finds the gap as the Sharks pressure the Parrramatta line.

8 min: Luke Burt adds the extras.  Eels 6 Sharks 2.

7 min: TRY.  Some nifty work spreading wide from Jarryd Hayne sees Ryan Morgan hit the ball at pace and cross in the corner.  A rarity as the try is awarded immediately.  Great start for the Eels.  They lead 4-2 with a kick to come.

6 min: PENALTY to Parramatta, Todd Carney the culprit committing the cardinal sin of giving one away on the last.  Parramatta with a golden opportunity deep in Sharks' territory.

4 min: Carney kicks deep and Luke Burt brings it up, Parramatta's first chance with the ball now.

Todd Carney makes no mistake and the Sharks take an early lead.  Sharks 2 Parramatta 0.

2 min: PENALTY.  Matthew Keating pinged for a high shot and the Sharks will, perhaps surprisingly, take the shot at goal.

1 min: Sandow gives away an early penalty and the Sharks will resume 45m out from the Eels line.

1 min: Chris Sandow kicks off and we're under way.

Just a few minutes away from kick-off at Parramatta Stadium tonight. The Sharks began this round in third and can regain that position with a win tonight, while Parramatta's position is well-known.  They haven't won since the upset over Manly in March and are anchored to the bottom.  Whether or not the full moon factor could cause an upset tonight remains to be seen.  Cronulla won a high-scoring Toyota Cup encounter 36-24 so it could be a good night out for the Sharks.
