Petero celebrates in style as Brisbane triumph

SEE NO EVIL Souths fans will point to a bad miss when the referees failed to see a forward pass in the lead-up to Dale Copley's 60th minute try but Brisbane owned the second half in their impressive victory tonight. It was a different Broncos side from the one that never took off in the opening stages. Souths took a 6-4 lead to the break but couldn't keep pace when Brisbane turned up the heat.

STATISTICAL DOMINATION The Broncos stepped it up in the second half to crush the soul of the Bunnies, who did give themselves some hope with a Nathan Merritt intercept. It ended with the Broncos having 57% possession and running for more than 400m more than their opponents.

ORIGIN TRIALS The match was full of Origin cameos. Dave Taylor looked out on his feet at points and if it came down to him or Corey Parker at the selection table, Parker's 54 tackles and 17 runs would leave the big Rabbitoh frozen out. Greg Inglis tried hard and looked dangerous at points from fullback but perhaps not enough to exclude Matt Bowen from Queensland reckoning.

KICKING ON There was a great moment at the end when Mr 300 himself, Petero Civoniceva, went to convert the try right on fulltime. Peter Wallace even teed it up and pointed it in the right direction. Sadly, the great prop couldn't make it count. I doubt the Rabbitohs will feel aggrieved by that cheeky move. But we did find out why we haven't seen him kicking before.

FULLTIME Brisbane 26 Souths 12.

79th min Petero is going to take the conversion! The crowd loves it! Wallace tees it up.... and he misses the extras! Souths might find that a bit demeaning but all good fun. The big fella just showed why he never had the opportunity before.

78th min That dropped from Souths means it's all over. Brisbane will close this out over the final couple of minutes. They're looking to attack again and there's the TRY to Ben Te'o, himself a Rabbitoh next season. Too easy in the end and acres of space on the right edge. It's 26-12 to Brisbane with a kick in the works. Curtains for the Bunnies.

75th min Hoffman is battered bot not beaten. Equal to that Sutton bomb and makes some good return metres to boot. Corey Parker just made a quality run for the Broncos as well - shrugged off three. He's got the points on Taylor easily tonight if it comes to an Origin face-off. Broncos 22 Souths 12.

72nd min This will come as scant relief to Souths fans but the refs picked up that forward pass from Wallace. No danger in midfield but well forward. If they missed that one you'd call in the Federal Police. Brisbane back with it now and have really controlled much of this second half. Inglis and Reynolds trying hard for the Rabbits but the Broncos looking too well-drilled. Brisbane lead 22-12.

69th min Inglis dragged over the sideline. Brisbane rejoice, forming a pretty little circle of pink jumpers to celebrate their defensive effort. All ahead for the Rabbitohs now if they want to get back in this game. Crowd is 33,602 if anyone at home was busily trying to guess.

68th min Much better stuff from Souths. Crisp attacking set and Sutton's grubber holds up enough to earn them another shot at Brisbane. They really need a try out of this phase of play or the Broncos could just close it out. Brisbane 22 Souths 12.

65th min This could be a freakish try for Brisbane! Gone upstairs but Norman is happy. That's a TRY! Amazing stuff. McCullough chips for himself, races through, gets a boot to it on the full, it bounces off the posterior of Inglis straight to the hands of Norman and he dives under the posts. Parker is good for the extras and it's now 22-12 in favour of the Broncos.

61st min Parker's kick is goooood from the sideline and Brisbane skip out to a 16-12 lead. Parker has remembered how to kick. The cut is on the other shin, if anyone is wondering.

59th min Brisbane's kicking game hasn't been particularly brilliant. Wallace has been ok but gets some luck there as it rebounds off the Souths player and they earn another set of six. McCullough goes close from dummy half but they get there eventually. Copley over in the corner and it's a TRY to the Broncos. Brisbane 14 Souths 12 with a kick on the way. The Norman pass in the lead-up to that looked a mile forward. Ooops.

55th min Hodges still clutching his side as Ben Lowe penalised for a high shot on Hoffman, who is a crash test dummy tonight. Gillett dishing out more hurt in defence as Civoniceva comes back on in his big night. He's hardly played. Souths 12 Brisbane 10.

52nd min Gillett just buried Justin Hunt. Ripper of a hit. Up and under and left a crater like he'd stepped on a land mine. Hunt eventually removes himself from the turf and rejoins the line. Cracking shot. Souths 12 Brisbane 10.

51st min Hoffman takes a monster bomb from Inglis and avoids getting smashed after he takes the mark. A first on two fronts tonight.

48th min Life support? Did I just write that? Make that... TRY to the Bunnies! Corey Norman's pass was picked off with ease by Nathan Merritt and he runs 90m to score under the posts. Terrible play from Norman - executed a set play and didn't even look where his pass was going. Souths are back in front after the conversion. It's 12-10 to the Rabbitohs.

47th min Mistake from the Rabbits gifts Brisbane another ideal chance to attack. Hodges winded but up and at them. The Rabbits on life support.

45th min Conversion is good and Brisbane strike fast in the second half. They lead 10-6. Poor start for the Rabbits.

44th min TRY to the Broncos. Alex Glenn the beneficiary of the the kick Wallace cross-kick and the pressure is telling. Parker lines up the kick and Brisbane lead it 8-6.

41st min We're back and an early penalty to Brisbane. They might sneak one here at the start of the half if Souths aren't careful. And another penalty to the Broncos - on the final tackle and all.

HALFTIME It's South Sydney 6 Brisbane 4, with tries to Chris McQueen for the Rabbitohs and Justin Hodges for Brisbane. Seven errors apiece in that half, which caused it to stop and start. A messy affair to this point punctuated with some very big front-on tackles.

38th min In all that, Ben Te'o copped a warning for a late hit on John Sutton but avoids a report. Reynolds knocks over the conversion and the Rabbits have the lead in this one. It's 6-4 and a poor read from Gillett to help McQueen on his way over for the try too. Needs to rid that from his game.

37th min Good defence Brisbane but Souths will get another shot just a few minutes before the break. Copley tried to run that kick out of the in-goal but had to run around Taylor, which took about seven or eight minutes in itself. He didn't get there. And here's the TRY to Chris McQueen! It's Brisbane 4 Souths 4.

35th min Inglis saves the day and HAMMERS Josh Hoffman. Wallace sliced them open again and drew and passed to Hoffman but GI read it superbly. Pass was a bit low, Hoffman had the eyes down and Inglis smashed him out of the park. The big Rabbitoh didn't even flinch. Now a penalty in a good spot for the Bunnies. Broncos lead 4-0.

30th min And finally a bit of action! Wallace goes flying up the middle and looks like he's about to score before Merritt grabs the last-pass intercept and flies off in the opposite direction. Then he tries to literally climb over the Brisbane defenders, without success. Greg Inglis looks like that arm is causing him some troubles. And Dave Taylor can barely walk he's so stuffed. He's still out there. Broncos 4 Souths 0.

28th min John Sutton. His Brother's Keeper should tell him to work on his kicking. Shanks that one and it flies out on the full. Now Gillett drops it. This game, well, is, er, a slow-burner to say the least. Brisbane 4 Souths 0.

26th min Nearly a forward pass from Souths - and that's about the most exciting thing I can report from here. I'm just waiting for this contest to come to life... and Matt Gillett makes it happen! Little bust up the middle and Inglis cleans up Hoffman over the top. That takes a the sting out of the attack. Broncos lead 4-0.

22nd min Parker's kick is no good. Stabs it across the face of the posts. No addition and Brisbane keep their 4-0 lead. Hunt had a pre-season contract with Brisbane at one point. Should have spend more time diving on loose balls.

21st min Justin Hunt makes the mistake and Justin Hodges pounces on it. Brisbane think they have a try and they do! TRY to the Broncos off the Rabbitohs error and it's 4-0. Hunt couldn't dive on that bobbling ball in the in-goal and Hodges made them pay.

19th min This game being played between the opposing 30m lines at the moment. Pretty willing though. Some good hits, with Parker looking to do a bit of damage for Brisbane and Josh McGuire taking a bit of damage for Brisbane. Good little kick from Norman here forces the mistake from Sutton. Good opportunity for the Broncos. No score as yet.

15th min Ahhhhhhhhh! That is plain murder of a perfectly good try! I cannot believe that what I just witnessed. Dave Taylor had a good touch to start the move with an offload on the right edge and Everingham was in space. He came to the fullback 20m out and amazingly, decided not to pass to Reynolds on his inside, who was left screaming and pointing at the posts. He gets tackled, then drops it. Absolute disaster there on all fronts. Souths should have had a 6-0 lead and now Brisbane force repeat sets at the other end. No score at Suncorp, somehow.

11th min Brisbane drop it again. If you are recording this game on IQ, best to fast-forward the first 10 minutes. PS, you may have noticed I tried to treat everyone to a Rocky montage. That didn't work. Try this instead. I wouldn't want anyone to miss out.

9th min Greg Inglis might put up the highest bombs in the game since Lockyer retired. Josh Hoffman had ZERO idea under that and ended up essentially shutting his eyes, letting it bounce and hoping for the best. It worked on this occasion so that's a fairly solid tactic. No score in Brisbane.

6th min Hoffman over for Brisbane... but it's forward! Thaiday with a good ball back on the inside but I don't think Brisbane has too much to complain about. He reached back to grab it and finished well but you don't get style points. It's 0-0.

5th min Dave Taylor has dropped it twice in the first five minutes. Errrrr.....

2nd min We're away. Sorry for the slow start. I won't lie - I was watching the intro to Rocky III with Nine reporter and part-time slugger Dan Koch. Meanwhile, Broncos kicked off and it went out on the full, Sam Thaiday stuffed up a play-the-ball and Brisbane are wearing entirely pink outfits.

Preamble Hello folks. My name's Phil and I'm a South Sydney tragic. Just thought I'd get that off my chest in case you notice any particular flavour spilling through the live coverage tonight. But fear not Brisbane fans - I jest. I've read the Fairfax editorial charter of independence 78 times this week so I'll be bowling stump-to-stump.

I'm expecting a very good match tonight from two sides who generally put on a good show with the ball. I'm loving all the the State of Origin subplots as well, which have a great deal more importance for the Maroons given the number of them running around. Big night for Matt Gillett, Dave Taylor, potential Qld fullback Greg Inglis and Corey Parker, coming back from a cut to the leg big enough to house his wallet and keys.

Of course, there's the obvious milestone tonight with Petero Civoniceva racking 300 first grade games. He's been an ironclad battleship for the Broncos, Penrith, Queensland and Australia over the years. I'm sure every football fan would wish him a good night out tonight.

  • The most inept biased 10mins of refereeing I have seen all year.

It's disgraceful when you have to beat the ref as well.

    • whatever ... you score a try at 10-12 off a 1 metre forward pass after having the ball in our quarter for 4 sets .. (ref awards try without going to the man upstairs) ..

Freakish deflection - score under the posts (ref goes to the man upstairs) wtf did he ask .. can you check the replay as i missed that other forward pass perhaps!!

this followed from a non existent penalty because your boy fell over just after the ref calls "held".

Last try ... big deal .. the damage was done earlier.

    • your pounding the line in our quarter defence is holding beautifully.

ref decides to award a try without going to the man upstairs after a 1 metre forward pass......

you guy's run the ball back from the kick and ref calls held while 3 players trying put your fella on the ground .. he falls over 2secs after the call "penalty" wtf .. you score on the 5th from a freakish deflection .. ref goes to the man upstairs (seriously what did he ask .. have a look at the replay the kick might of been forward?)

last try ... really??? Who cares .... great game wrecked by 10 mins of the crappiest refereeing seen this year.

Hoot all you like now .. we'll be see you in September!!

  • Yay Broncos! As a Queenslander, I'm a bit concerned about the form of one D Taylor from this call. But sounds like Broncos were a class above. The only team looking like upsetting the Storm for premiership at the moment it would seem

Top call Phil, even fpr a Bunnies tragic like yourself. Come to the red and gold side.......be one of us.........

    • Another game won by the ref. Brisbane get a penalty on the line for stripping when it was Brisbanes last tackle & the player wanted to get rid of the ball. And then next try 2 forward passes that everyone saw except the ref. Hopeless!!!!!!!!!!!
