Live: Cronulla Sharks v Canterbury Bulldogs

    Sort posts by:

Full-time wrap: This defeat will hurt the Sharks perhaps more than their past four this season. They were in the contest for the most part of the match but handling errors, poor decision making and a lack of creativity in key moments cost them the match. They started the game the brighter but became rattled as soon as the Bulldogs began to fight back in the first half. From there, they never recovered.

Full-Time wrap: Canterbury took their time to find their feet in Gosford but they soon became ruthless in attack. The encouraging sign for Des Hasler was his team's ability to execute a clear game plan to considerable effect. Their pressure on Cronulla's play makers suffocated their opponents creativity and their strength under the high ball paid in dividends with Sam Perrett and Mitch Brown applying the finishing touches.

Ben Barba was strong in defence but was far from his exhilarating best. There was an air of excitement whenever he embarked on a kick-return but he rarely lived up to the crowd's expectations. He, and the Bulldogs still have a long way to go if they're to come close to replicating their success of last season.

FULL-TIME: Bulldogs have kickstarted their season with an emphatic 24-8 win over Cronulla Sharks.

77th min: The Bulldogs are tightening the screws on Cronulla's defence and force a goal-line drop out. Though, the Sharks regain the ball after a short kick catches the Bulldogs defence out.

75th min: Wade Graham and Josh Reynolds exchange a few handbags after a tackle and the Sharks second-rower grapples his opponents neck behind the play. Nothing comes of it and the two return to their duties and the crowd is denied a biff.

74th min: Hodkinson converts his easiest kick of the game as the Bulldogs cruise to a 24-8 lead.

72nd min: TRY. Sam Perrett seals the win for the Bulldogs with the moment of the match. Canterbury's flying winger intercepts a poor Carney pass and sprints 40 metres to score his second of the afternoon. KTC.

68th min: The Sharks are awarded a penalty 20 metres out from the try line and must come up with a big play soon to have any chance of salvaging this match. Though, their spell of possession is ended prematurely as Wade Graham spills the ball early in the count.

64th minute: 10,131 is the official attendance here but it looks closer to about 5,000. Perhaps they've included the food and beverage workers, camera crew, cleaners, security, players, coaches in that figure.

61st min: TRY. Brown scores a deserved second try of the afternoon. The Bulldogs exploited an overlap on the left flank and Brown scored unopposed in the corner.  Hodkinson maintains his perfect game off the boot with another sideline conversion. Bulldogs lead 18-8.

59th minute: A let off for the Sharks. The ball was illegally raked out of the tackle and a Bulldogs player latches on to the loose ball to run over and score. No advantage was called by the referee and a penalty awarded to the Bulldogs.

56th minute: Carney finds Gallen with a cut-out pass but the Cronulla forward drops the ball 2 metres away from the line. A certain try bombed.

55th minute: Canterbury were disjointed in attack and they failed to test the Sharks defence despite their good field position. An aimless grubber was hit too hard and evaded the chasers to bounce over the dead ball line. Bulldogs lead 12-8.

53rd min: The Bulldogs continue their kicking game from the first half with another bomb into the corner and Brown again comes close to punishing the Sharks. His tenacious efforts forces a knock-on and the Bulldogs receive the scrum for another set of six inside the Sharks 20 metres.

49th minute: Despite clawing their way back into the contest, the Sharks fail to build momentum in the resulting set. A knock-on by Jonathan Wright gives the Bulldogs the ball deep in the Sharks half. Some desperate defending by Cronulla prevents Canterbury from further punishing them.

46th minute: TRY. The Sharks are back in the game. Wade Graham breaks through the Bulldogs defensive line with ease and cuts back inside to set-up Luke Lewis for a simple try under the posts.

Michael Gordon adds the extras to reduce the deficit to four points. Bulldogs lead 12-8

41st minute: Anthony Tupou is slow getting off the ground to play the ball and replays showed that an ankle lock by Greg Eastwood was perhaps why. No penalty was given for the lift and slight twist of the leg and Tupou showed his frustration by eventually lashing out at his marker.

Half time wrap: It hasn't been a game for the purists but the Bulldogs have offered more creativity in their attack and variety in their kicking game. The Sharks will be disappointed to be trailing by 10 points and on the balance of play, they probably don't deserve to be. However, handling errors and poor decisions have spurned at least two strong raids on the try line and unless they address their cohesion, they will find it hard to get back in the game.

Todd Carney needs to  bring his outside backs into the game more often in the second half as the likes of Ben Pomeroy and Nathan Stapleton looked dangerous going forward in the first half.

40th min: The pressure is taking it's toll on the Sharks and Jason Bukuya drops the ball in the tackle 25 metres out from his own try line. The Bulldogs will have one more set of six before the siren to extend their lead. They kick early in the count with a grubber to the blindside and Brown comes close to scoring his second.

Though the video ref disagrees with this claims for a try seconds before half-time. Bulldogs lead 12-2 at the break.

35th minute: Hodkinson takes his second attempt from the opposite sideline and his conversion is again perfect. No curve, just a powerful effort rifled over the black dot. Bulldogs lead 12-2.

34th minute: VIDEO REF. Bulldogs looked to have crossed the line for a second time but we're going upstairs to confirm the four-pointer. Ben Barba appeared to be comfortably contained by his tacklers but somehow found space to offload to Mitch Brown to score an easy try.

The green light is given and the Bulldogs lead 10-2.

33rd minute: A teasing Todd Carney run looked to have opened the Bulldogs defence and the Sharks playmaker made a cut out pass for the unmarked Beau Ryan. An inspired Josh Morris interception prevented a certain line break and possible try.

30th minute: For all the talk of the strength of Sharks forward pack, they've failed to apply enough pressure to the Bulldogs in the latter stages of this half. The Bulldogs are finding some space out wide and they're showing a greater willingness to get the ball to their outside backs early in the tackle count.

27th minute: Ben Pomeroy bursts through the Bulldogs line and breaks through a tackle to run unopposed to the line. His run is thwarted by Ben Barba who covers a lot of ground to force an anxious pass from Pomeroy, but his wayward effort goes into touch instead of finding his teammate. Bulldogs 6-2

26th minute: Reynolds catches the Sharks defence napping with a cheeky grubber into the right corner and Nathan Stapleton picked up the ball deep in his own goal. He danced away from Reynolds and the other Bulldogs chasers to scurry back into the field of play.

21st minute: Another aerial raid by the Bulldogs forces a nervous defensive effort by the Sharks. Josh Reynolds kicks a midfield bomb and it's clear that Des Hasler has told his players to exploit the Sharks wingers ability under the high-ball.

18th minute: Hodkinson fires a stinging conversion from the right touch line that sails smoothly between the posts. Bulldogs 6-2

16th minute: TRY Bulldogs. Hodkinson places a high bomb into the far corner of the field and Sam Perrett out-leaped Nathan Stapleton to score the first try of the match.

13th minute: The Bulldogs still look rattled and are struggling to find their rhythm. Their halves are not dictating the play and a rushed kick by prop Greg Eastwood was all that salved their last set of six. Sharks 2-0

9th minute: Todd Carney unlocks the Bulldogs defence with a quick pass to Stapleton on the blindside and the Sharks winger burst through their line with a blistering pace. He looked destined to cross the line but spurned the support when he aimlessly threw the ball behind his runner in support.

5th minute: PENALTY GOAL. The penalties just keep stacking up against the Dogs. An illegal rake infront of the posts gifts Michael Gordon a chance to convert the opening points. SHARKS 2-0

3rd minute: The Bulldogs are playing poor earlyl in this match. A handling error late in the tackle count followed by penalty on their first defensive tackle gave the Sharks an early chance to attack.

1st minute: We're underway here. Bulldogs kick off and immediately give away a penalty. Tony Williams was deemed to have landed a high tackle and gifted the Sharks good field possession early in the match.

Team changes: There's been a late change to the Bulldogs starting lineup with Des Hasler including Frank Pritchard in the run-out team. Josh Jackson will be the man to make way and will start from the bench.

There's still some time until kick-off but early indications suggest that there will be a very low attendance here at Bluetongue Stadium. Unless there's a late rush, we could see some entire bays empty on the north side of the ground.

Rugby league fans had this round seven clash circled with a red biro when the NRL released their 2013 fixture list.

It was a match billed as a potential finals warm up as two teams that finished strongly on the back end of 2012 and recruited well in the off-season face off. Instead, it will be a battle of desperation as they've collectively won just three games this season.

Injuries, suspensions and off-field controversies combined with the burden of expectation have crippled the Sharks and Bulldogs early title aspirations. In the neutral venue of Gosford, both teams will see this as a great opportunity to kick-start their season at the expense of a fellow struggler which could lead to a frantic and exciting game of league.

Michael Carayannis writes:  Both sides are due to turn around their poor starts to the season. Cronulla will be boosted by the much needed return of star five-eighth Todd Carney and they will be banking on Carney’s class to create some attacking opportunities. Only Canterbury and the Warriors have scored fewer points than the Sharks this season.

It was another turbulent off-field week for Canterbury following the resignation of boss Todd Greenberg. Bulldogs half Trent Hodkinson has a chance to cement his place in the top squad after again being named in the No.7 jersey. It will be Canterbury’s second game at Bluetongue Stadium this year, with Cronulla taking their home game away from Sutherland Shire to Gosford.

    Michael's tip: Sharks by 4

AAP writes: Two teams thought to be premiership contenders face an early season make-or-break clash on neutral territory. The last-placed Bulldogs are already three wins outside the top six and can't afford to give away any more ground to the premiership front-runners. Rumours of player unrest have been followed by chief executive Todd Greenberg's impending departure. Coach Des Hasler should have no problems creating a siege mentality.

The return of Todd Carney could not have come at a better time for the Sharks, who have lost three straight since the NSW Origin star went down. But with ASADA postponing interviews with players, it could be another tough week for the Sharks to focus on the job at hand.

Key: Ben Barba. The best way for the Bulldogs star to put to rest all the rumours is to rediscover some of the magic that made him one of the game's best in 2012.
