Full-time: SOUTH SYDNEY 28 (G Inglis 2 S Burgess B Goodwin N Merritt tries A Reynolds 4 goals) bt NORTH QUEENSLAND 10 (A Winterstein 2 tries J Thurston goal) at ANZ Stadium. Referees: Jared Maxwell, Luke Phillips. Crowd: 15,972. Good night and thank you for joining us.

79 min: George Burgess trample defenders again. The bloke reminds me of the Ivan Drago character in Rocky IV; he's one hell of a physical specimen.

77 min: Inglis scoops up a loose ball and races away to score his second try, securing victory for Souths. What an awesome sight he is in full flight. Reynolds converts. Souths 28-10.

75 min: Penalty gives Cowboys good field position. They must score in this set of six otherwise the two points are Souths'.

72 min: Superb covering tackle by Reynolds denies Winterstein his third try. Dare I say it, that was an Origin-like play.

67 min: Quick hands to the left puts NSW State of Origin hopeful Nathan Merritt over for Souths' third last-tackle try tonight. Reynolds' kick misses so the Cowboys are still alive. Souths 22-12.

66 min: Great run by Ben Te'o, then a penalty, puts Souths in a great position to just about wrap up this match.

64 min: Brilliant attack from the Cowboys is met with equally brilliant defence from the Rabbitohs. That's where they are winning the tight games this season.

61 min: Reynolds' hands let him down again while trying to field a kick, giving the Cowboys a repeat set on the Rabbitohs' try line.

54 min: Uncharacteristic handling error from Reynolds near the Cowboys line relieves pressure on the visitors.

51 min: Kane Linnett's pass to Winterstein goes flying over the sideline, spoiling a promising Cowboys attack.

47 min: Winterstein scores his second, off a pinpoint Thurston bomb. Making amends for his earlier stuff-up, Thurston bends the conversion beautifully to reduce the deficit to eight. Souths 18-10.

44 min: Inglis scores from a kick to put Souths well in command. Thurston will be kicking himself for not batting it dead. Reynolds makes it three from three conversions. Souths 18-4.

41 min: Early turnover puts the Cowboys under pressure.

Cub reporter extraordinaire Michael Carayannis writes: "Flat start to the game. Both teams have threatened to make a move but none have managed to keep the momentum going for long bursts. Souths produced a strong 10 minute period midway through the first half, sparked by George Burgess' arrival in the 20 minute mark. Greg Inglis has been strangely quiet. The match is still certainly in the balance, with some brilliance from the likes of Thurston, Reynolds and Inglis to decide this one."

Try savers: Johnathan Thurston and Rory Kostjasyn fell Souths' Adam Reynolds just short of the try line.

    Half-time: Rabbitohs 12-4.

39 min: Luck not going with the Cowboys tonight as the video ref denies Brent Tate a try after a banana kick from Thurston that Joey Johns would have been proud of. Big call, that.

37 min: Thurston forces a Rabbitohs drop-out with a well-weighted grubber. Cowboys would love to hit back on the stroke on half-time.

32 min: Former Huddersfield hooker Scott Moore on for the Cowboys. There are more Poms on the field than on Bondi Beach on Christmas Day.

30 min: The Burgess boys are on fire! Souths fans reckon they're the best brothers to come out of England since Noel and Liam Gallagher.

28 min: Breath-taking end-to-end set from the Bunnies ends in another try, to centre Bryson Goodwin.

Reynolds caps it off with a terrific conversion from a difficult angle. Souths 12-4.

24 min: Speaking of the Burgess boys, Sam powers over the top of Thurston and Cooper on the last to get the Bunnies on the board. Adam Reynolds lands a simple conversion. Souths 6-4.

21 min: That massive human George Burgess is on the field. Let's see if he can spark the Bunnies. The Burgess family's food bill must have been astronomical while the brothers were growing up!

19 min: Cowboys defence continues to hold firm, with Inglis tackled on the last near their line. Slow start from the Bunnies, they look off their game so far tonight.

16 min: NO TRY to the Cowboys after video ref rules Gavin Cooper had knocked on before kicking through for Winterstein to pounce on a ball that had been fumbled by Inglis. Very close call but fair enough.

10 min: Souths lose the pill deep inside their own territory - and the Cowboys make them pay. Winger Antonio Winterstein crosses in the corner after the Cowboys had created an overlap on the left despite a loose pass from Thurston. Thurston's conversion attempt is waved away. Cowboys 4-0.

6 min: Excellent defence from the Cowboys holds the Rabbitohs out. North Queensland working the ball out of their own end.

4 min: Knock on by the Cowboys inside their 20m hands a golden opportunity to the Bunnies to draw first blood.

1 min: Thurston kicks off to Greg Inglis.

Players are making their way down the tunnel now. Not long until kick-off. Russell Crowe is in attendance for this one.

Welcome to our live coverage of tonight's match. Can't believe it's round nine already - where has the year gone?

The high-flying Rabbitohs are 1-17, with Jeff Lima and Justin Hunt dropping off the six-man bench. The Cowboys have made one late change to their starting line-up: Ray Thompson will partner Johnathan Thurston in the halves instead of Michael Morgan. Joel Riethmuller drops off their bench.

The Holden Cup match ended in a 20-all draw.

    RABBITOHS v COWBOYS

ANZ Stadium, Sydney Olympic Park, Friday 7.35pm (AEST)
    Last meeting:
     Round 8 2012 - Souths 20 bt Cowboys 16 at ANZ Stadium
    Head-to-head: Souths 12 Cowboys 9 drawn 1
    Referees: Jared Maxwell, Luke Phillips
    TV: Channel 9 (live)
    TAB Sportsbet:
     Souths $1.26 Cowboys $4.00
    FootyTab: Cowboys +9.5

Phil Mitchell writes: Another week, another very settled Souths line-up. Such stability has been the cornerstone of the Rabbitohs’ success this season; leading players Greg Inglis, John Sutton, Adam Reynolds, Issac Luke and Nathan Merritt have not missed a match, and they’re in the form of their lives as Souths share the competition lead with Melbourne.

The Cowboys, on the other hand, have been unable to string quality performances together week to week, and last Saturday pretty much fell over the line against the struggling Eels despite a glut of possession in the first half. The Rabbitohs have won seven of their past eight matches against North Queensland since 2007, although six of those victories have been by six points or less. Phil's tip: Rabbitohs by 12

AAP writes: The battle of two of the best and biggest packs in the NRL adds extra glitz to what should be an enthralling contest. Souths have worked out how to win when playing under-par this year and look genuine premiership contenders. The Cowboys are brimming with talent but are yet to fully hit their straps. They also travel as badly as Guinness outside of Dublin, but will be boosted by a rare win in Sydney against Parramatta last week.

Key: Australia Test front-rowers James Tamou and Matt Scott will come up against two of the best of British in the form of the giant Burgess brothers - not a battle for the faint-hearted.

RABBITOHS: Greg Inglis, Nathan Merritt, Beau Champion, Bryson Goodwin, Andrew Everingham, John Sutton, Adam Reynolds, Dave Tyrrell, Issac Luke, Roy Asotasi, Chris McQueen, Ben Te’o, Sam Burgess. Interchange: Nathan Peats, Jason Clark, Ben Lowe, George Burgess.

COWBOYS: Matthew Bowen, Ashley Graham, Brent Tate, Kane Linnett, Antonio Winterstein, Johnathan Thurston (capt), Ray Thompson, Matthew Scott (capt), Rory Kostjasyn, James Tamou, Tariq Sims, Gavin Cooper, Dallas Johnson. Interchange: Glenn Hall, Ashton Sims, Scott Bolton, Scott Moore

    • Can't we discuss the game without mentioning the odds? It is not normal and should not be accepted as normal. I love a punt but to have it saturate every form of media is getting very old, very quickly.

      Now...how 'bout those Burgess boys?!

If I were a bookie I'd have both these teams at similar odds. Perhaps Souths slight favourite with the home ground advantage.

I'm having a golden run on the punt of late and I've put the money on the Cowboys.

      $4.25? TYVM.

      • On paper yes, the cowboys have a strong side but Bookies take form into consideration and the bunnies are on fire while the cowboys have been sputtering. Another factor is the Cowboys away form. If this game was up north then yeah, the odds would be very different. Tom will happily accept your money.
