JAMES POLSON: Full-time: James Maloney adds another two and it's a final scoreline of Roosters 16 Manly 4 at Brookvale Oval tonight, their first win north of the harbour in almost a decade.  Gutsy stuff from the Roosters to repel the Manly attack, particularly after losing Jared Waerea-Hargreaves who was sent off late in the second half.  Doubtless that will be the talking point of the match, which is unfortunate because this was a stellar performance from the Roosters and few would say they weren't deserved winners. Including me, which is saying something. Their defence has been incredible all year and to not only beat a fellow premiership heavyweight, but to restrict them to one try and do it a man down is the hallmark of a great side.  The win puts the boys from Bondi into outright second, Manly stay fourth, and that's it from us tonight.  Thanks for your company and we'll be back to kick off round 10 on Friday night.  Be sure to grab tomorrow's Herald for Glenn Jackson's take on the match or log on to smh.com.au to read that and all the rest of Australia's best sporting news and analysis.  Thanks for your company.

80 min: Try awarded and that's the ball game to move the Roosters into outright second on the ladder.  Roosters 14 Manly 4, kick to come.

80 min: The Roosters look to have scored the matchwinner after Jorge Taufua spills it on the Manly line and Jake Friend dives on it.  Referee says try and it's hard to argue.

79 min: Anthony Watmough diffuses Maloney's second attempt.

79 min: Maloney looks like shaping for a field goal but decides against it.

78 min: Manly penalised for a strip and that could just about be curtains for the Sea Eagles.

77 min: Time running out for Manly as Peta Hiku fields an awkward grubber in the Manly in-goal.

75 min: James Maloney slots the penalty and we're going for golden point if Manly can find a try.  For now though it's Roosters 10 Manly 4.

75 min: Brenton Lawrence penalised for offside and it's the Roosters' turn to build some pressure.  Or take the two points, which they decide to do.

73 min: Glenn Stewart penalised for picking up Daniel Tupou and taking him back over the tryline.  Tackle deemed complete and the Roosters are out of danger for now.

72 min: Daly Cherry-Evans tries to force the offload after getting on to a lovely ball from Jamie Lyon but it's the Roosters who come up with it before spilling it themselves.  Manly feed and you sense this one could be just about to explode.  Score remains 8-4 in favour of the Roosters.

71 min: Shaun Kenny-Dowall knocks on and the Sea Eagles will have yet another set in good position.

69 min: George Rose has been absolutely cleaned up by Jared Waerea-Hargreaves and he's been sent off.  Yes, you read that correctly, sent off.  Deserved in my biased opinion, but how good is it to see a referee actually do something for once?  That's why it's there.

68 min: Sensational work from Manly there.  Daniel Tupou takes the kick in-goal and looks to have made it back to safety before being driven back behind the line.  Line drop-out it is.

68 min: Taufua 5m out from the Roosters' line and this looks ominous from Manly.

66 min: SKD comes up with the knock-on this time and Manly will have the scrum feed.

65 min: Incredible stat there - Manly have spent 90% of the last 5 minutes in their own half.  It must be said that this has been a performance befitting the two best defensive sides in the comp.

    64 min: No try ruled.

64 min: Roger Tuivasa-Sheck grounds one in the Manly in-goal but the referee has called no try.  Peta Hiku the happiest man north of the Spit after making an absolute meal of that one.

63 min: Steve Matai goes the old catch-and-pass to Jorge Taufua but it's ruled forward from the Manly centre.

61 min: I neglected to mention that Jake Friend has been placed on report for that hit on Kite.

61 min: Brent Kite cops one in the melon and it's yet another penalty to Manly for a high shot.

60 min: Still Roosters 8 Manly 4 as the hour-mark ticks over.

57 min: Roger Tuivasa-Sheck is absolutely monstered by Justin Horo just as it appeared he might break through.  And the Roosters get a penalty on the subsequent play.

JAMES POLSON: Thanks to the great Emma Kemp for subbing in off the bench for a guest stint.  And she's right, yours truly is very happy with how things have turned out.  Not so happy with that last decision though.

54th minute: I spoke too soon about being in sync and all that. The Roosters put in a pathetic set of six and Manly are at the halfway line again.

51st minute: Complete possession split so far in the second half. Matai looked to have passed forward then on the first play of Manly's set but it's not pulled up. Lovely tackle by Jennings on the third. The Roosters are getting their defence in sync now and snatch the ball back at metres from their own line.

50th minute: Well, Polson is eating chips so I'm still here. A smaller kick this time from Cherry-Evans and Lyon flies high to catch it but it taps off his hand and bounces backwards. It's ricocheted again, this time off Lyon's legs, and he dives to ground it but misses. David Williams slaps it down over the line but the ref rules he was offside. No try.

48th minute: Try! Cherry-Evans is surging sideways again towards Manly's strong attack on the right. Oh that was sublime! A perfectly placed kick finds the arms of Steve Matai. It's a battle in the air and he had to fight hard to get the ball on the ground but he's managed to squeeze between Roger Tuivasa-Sheck and Shaun Kenny-Dowall. Jamie Lyon misses a pretty easy conversion but it's points on the scoreboard. Polson will be well happy as he returns. Emma here by the way. I'll say goodbye now. Bye.

44th minute: Big scramble from David Williams as Michael Jennings tries to sneak down the left-hand side to the post.

43rd minute: Cherry-Evans is on the move and flicks out wide to Lyon but he clumsily loses it. Roosters feed the scrum.

41 min: Back under way here at Brookie as Brenton Lawrence is driven back towards his own line.

GLENN JACKSON: Here's what Jacko had to say after the first half:

Sydney Roosters have once again held a side scoreless through a half,
and lead 8-0. It is something of a miracle that just one try was
scored. A lively contest it might be, and an open one, but both sides
have missed several opportunities. Michael Jennings' converted try,
having run 90 metres after a loose Daly Cherry-Evans pass with Manly
deep in attack, and a James Maloney penalty goal have split the teams
    at the break.

Half-time entertainment.  Here's some rock n' roll for your Monday night.  The Rolling Stones are a few dates into their 50 and Counting tour and last week were joined in California by none other than Tom Waits.  What does this have to do with anything, you ask?  Nothing.  But they did bust out Howlin' Wolf's Little Red Rooster, and here it is for your viewing pleasure.  Back soon.

JAMES POLSON: Siren sounds and the Roosters head into the break with a deserved 8-0 lead.  Perhaps it doesn't belie how even this contest has been but both sides had their opportunities and Trent Robinson's men are the only ones to take them so far.  The opening 30 minutes of this one was played at a level we've only seen a few times this season and shows there's little between these two premiership heavyweights.  We'll be back with the half-time assessment from our man on (at?) the ground, Glenn Jackson, as well as a bit of Roosters-themed half-time entertainment.

40 min: Manly will have the final say in the opening term.  Unless they knock on.

39 min: The errors are beginning to take a bit of lustre from what had been a blistering opening term, this time it's Glenn Stewart who spills it metres out from the line.

37 min: Another error, this time from Luke O'Donnell and the Eagles will have a great chance to get themselves on the board before the break.

Sun-Herald sports editor and tragic Shark Paul Suttor has chimed in on Shaun Kenny-Dowall's challenge to the basic laws of physics.

34 min: Aiden Guerra spills it for the Roosters just when it began to look like the Roosters would score again.  If the Sea Eagles can hit back Geoff Toovey would be a very happy man.  Not to state the obvious or anything...

32 min: James Maloney slots it and it's now Roosters 8 Manly 0 as the break approaches.

31 min: Another penalty for the Roosters who are taking the shot at goal.

30 min: George Rose pinged for a shoulder charge on Jared Waerea-Hargreaves.

29 min: Manly spill it on the second tackle from the line drop-out and that's a let-off for the Roosters.

28 min: Anthony Tupou the hero for the Roosters there.  Glenn Stewart puts a perfectly-weighted kick into the in-goal and David Williams looked like scoring for all money before Tupou gets a hand to it.  Roosters 6 Manly 0.

27 min: What happened there? Shaun Kenny-Dowall takes the intercept and appears to pass it to himself, knocking on in the process.  Not the walking acronym's finest moment and that's sure to get a run on Mad Monday.

26 min:  Another penalty as Jared Waerea-Hargreaves is pinged for a high shot.

25 min: Pressure building for the Roosters here as they concede a penalty for being inside the 10m.  Can Manly make something of this possession?  We'll see.

23 min: A good opportunity for Manly here.  Steve Matai goes the short grubber just inches out from the line and Roger Tuivasa-Sheck is unable to quite control it and knocks on.  Repeat set for the Eagles.

21 min: And a forward pass is ruled to force a turnover.  Manly defenders reacting as if they've scored themselves.

20 min: Still 6-0 to the Roosters as the Tricolors again pepper the Manly line.

17 min: Brenton Lawrence makes a bust up the middle before getting the offload away but a few plays later Steve Matai is unable to get to the ball, knocks on, and that's the end of that for the Sea Eagles.  Intense stuff here in the opening stages.

16 min: A strong run from Glenn Stewart there but the kick rolls dead and it's the Roosters on the attack once more.

13 min: Somehow that conversion's gone through and it's Roosters 6 Manly 0.

11 min: Michael Jennings has run the length of the field for the Roosters to score the opener.  David Williams made a meal of getting to a long Daly Cherry-Evans pass and the centre is left with no-one in front of him.  Roosters 4 Manly 0, kick to come.

9 min: Roosters pinged now with the Sea Eagles 35m out.  A bit of a suspect pass in the previous play but the men in pink missed it (or I was wrong) and it's Matai taking it up for Manly.

    Still 0-0 here at Brookvale.

8 min: Tuivasa-Sheck again in the thick of it there taking the bomb with aplomb.

7 min: Strong defence from Manly in that set.

4 min: Penalty to the Roosters after Roger Tuivasa-Sheck makes a bust and almost makes it the length of the field to score.  Roosters in strong position again.

3 min: Peta Hiku makes no mistake fielding an ominous high ball from the Roosters and it's Jorge Taufua who carries it to the 20m line for Manly.

2 min: Anthony Watmough, who is playing his 250th game for the Eagles tonight, throws a wayward pass which goes to ground but it's gone backward and Steve Matai is there to clean up.

1 min: Daly Cherry-Evans gets under way as Martin Kennedy takes the first hit-up for the visitors.

Teams are making their way down the tunnel and we're not far off a start here at Brookvale.

Steve Matai has pulled up sore from his warm-up after returning from a one-week suspension and it remains to be seen what, if any, part he'll play in tonight's clash.

JAMES POLSON: Welcome to Brookvale Oval tonight as we wrap up round nine with the Sea Eagles hosting the Roosters.  Second place is on offer for the winner here tonight following the Storm's shock loss to Penrith, which leaves Michael Maguire's Rabbitohs boasting the outright competition lead.  A change for Manly at the back tonight, with young Peta Hiku, who impressed me on debut a few weeks ago, filling the rather sizeable shoes of Brett Stewart at fullback.  We're about 10 minutes from kick-off here and we'll be back with any other team news between now and then.  Stay tuned.

Phil Mitchell writes: The Roosters have started the season with a bang yet in the eyes of some a question mark still hangs over their premiership credentials. Only one of the Roosters’ six wins has been against a top-eight side, Brisbane in round three. So their results over the next three rounds, against top-eight teams Manly, North Queensland and Melbourne, will be telling.

The Sea Eagles have had the wood on the men from Bondi Junction in recent seasons, winning eight of their past 10 clashes and the past six at Brookvale Oval. Manly welcome back intimidating left centre Steve Matai from a one-match suspension but the injured Brett Stewart will be sorely missed.

    Phil's tip: Roosters by 4

AAP writes: The Roosters lead the competition in both attack and defence, and have certainly cemented themselves as one of the premiership favourites. But the fact remains that only one of their six victories has come against a top eight opponent. Manly present a great opportunity to test themselves against a team that knows how to win big games, and are a good example of the level they’ll need to be at in the coming weeks when they also take on North Queensland and Melbourne. Manly suffered a major blow this week with key fullback Brett Stewart ruled out for a month with a back injury, but hitman Steve Matai returns from suspension.

Key: Sonny Bill Williams hasn’t put a foot wrong in his return to rugby league so far. Manly’s in-your-face pack presents a new problem, but he has shown a willingness to embrace the tough stuff.

SEA EAGLES: TBA, Jorge Taufua, Jamie Lyon (capt), Steve Matai, David Williams, Kieran Foran, Daly Cherry-Evans, Brenton Lawrence, Matt Ballin, Brent Kite, Anthony Watmough, Justin Horo, Glenn Stewart.
