    • You're not saying that the game has become so contrived that it's easy for a referee to favour one side over another are you JdClarke?

      RTP. | June 01, 2013, 9:11PM
    • Yeah they got heaps of favours Monday night with an 11-3 penalty count against them, even more favours with a blatant forward pass the knights scored off.

    Live: Rabbitohs v Knights

Join League HQ as an Origin-depleted Souths side test their depth against the Knights.

    Sort posts by:

Full-time: Rabbitohs win 25-18 and remain on top of the table. The Knights now have only win from their past five games.

SOUTH SYDNEY 25 (G Burgess B Champion J Sutton D Walker tries A Reynolds 4 goals A Reynolds field goal) bt NEWCASTLE 18 (J Mantellato A McKinnon J McManus tries J Mantellato 3 goals) at ANZ Stadium. Referees: Gavin Badger, Alan Shortall. Crowd: 13,225.

78 min: Reynolds lands the knockout blow on the Knights with a booming 45m field goal. Rabbitohs 25-18.

77 min: Naiqama's kick goes touch in-goal. Rabbitohs' 20m restart.

73 min: Sutton's field goal attempt is unsuccessful, much to the relief of Knights fans.

68 min: Great finishing by my colleague Jim Morrison's (yes, that is his real name) favourite player James McManus and a goal from wide out by Mantellato cuts the deficit to six again. Rabbitohs 24-18.

65 min: Farrell goes over in the corner after a terrific burst out of dummy half by Luke, from which the Knights never really regrouped. Reynolds' kick from the sideline sails over. Rabbitohs 24-12.

62 min: Bustling Souths defence forces a knock-on from the Knights. Another opportunity goes begging.

61 min: Luke penalised and put on a report for a shoulder charge on Jeremy Smith.  Knights will have their third straight set of six on the Bunnies' line. Meanwhile, Champion is being taken off by the medi-cab with an ankle injury after colliding with Tyrone Roberts.

55 min: By George! Souths prop George Burgess powers over from 20m out to give Souths the lead for the first time. Reynolds makes it three from three. Try No.5 for the big fella this season. Very, very difficult to stop with a full head of steam. Rabbitohs 18-12.

53 min: Another penalty to Souths sends them deep into the Knights' half.

51 min: The match has developed into an arm wrestle. Who will break first?

45 min: Poor handling afflicting both sides in the early stages of the second half.

43 min: Knights receive only their second penalty, compared with seven to Souths.

42 min: Little Issac Luke pinches the ball one-one-one off big Willie Mason. Big play.

41 min: Knights get the second half under way. A knock-on from Roy Asotaso gives them an early chance.

Half-time: 12-12. Our reporter at the game, Michael Chammas, says: The greasy conditions have made for a hard slog. This match will come down to the battle between the kicking game of Jarrod Mullen and Adam Reynolds. Whichever team can get their side on the front foot will win this game. South Sydney look very flat and are missing Sam Burgess more than their three Queenslanders. George Burgess made an impact when he came on the field but he's missing his partner in crime. It's time for Issac Luke to start taking on the line and running muck through the middle.

37 min: Fourth dropout of the half for the Knights after an error from Naiqama caused their hearts to skip a beat. Fortunately Mullen was on hand to dive on the loose ball.

36 min: Mantello forced to knock a Sutton kick dead. Souths building pressure on the Knights.

35 min: Souths receive another play-the-ball penalty and will have a chance to hit the front after Reynolds' touch-finder.

34 min: Knights centre Joey Leilua is held up over the line after catching a Mullen bomb. Strong defence by the Bunnies.

34 min: McKinnon is being stretchered off with an apparent ankle injury. He also bleeding profusely after a head clash with Josh Starling. That will be the end of his night.

31 min: Beau Champion scores, running a great line off a nice short ball from Nathan Merritt. Reynolds' successful conversion levels the scores. 12-12.

27 min: Souths hit back with a superb individual try to Blues cast-off John Sutton, who showed great footwork and strength to beat several Knights defenders. Reynolds raises the flags. Knights 12-6.

24 min: The Knights regain possession after a kick that Adam Reynolds would love to have back.

23 min: Souths force another line dropout. Can they break this resolute Newcastle defence?

16 min: Great cut-out pass from Naiqama puts Mantellato over for his first NRL try. Mantellato adds the extras from the sideline, bending the kick like Thurston! Where has this bloke been? Knights 12-0.

15 min: 40-20 by Mullen gives Newcastle great field position and a chance to go further ahead.

12 min: Newcastle capitalise as Kevin Naiqama puts Alex McKinnon over with a questionable pass. Mantellato, the 26-year-old debutant, lands the conversion. Knights 6-0.

11 min: Second handling error from the Bunnies in as many minutes gives the Knights the ball inside Souths' 20m.

10 min: Souths produce their first error (and the game's first error), handing back possession to the Knights.

9 min: Clever kick by John Sutton gets Souths a repeat set as antellato is tackled in the Knights' in-goal.

8 min: Souths are handed their first attacking chance via a penalty.

7 min: Like last night, it's been a conservative start by both teams, neither prepared to take too many risks with the ball.

4 min: Great work by young Dylan Walker to defuse a Jarrod Mullen cross-field kick and stay in the field of play.

3 min: Penalty to the Knights after Robbie Rochow is stripped of the ball while making a strong run into the Rabbitohs' territory.

    1 min: Rabbitohs kick off.

Both teams are making their way on to a drizzly ANZ Stadium now. If last night's game is any guide, tries will be hard to come by tonight.

Evening everybody and welcome to our coverage tonight of a game that Souths need to win to avoid being displaced by Melbourne on top of the competition ladder.

Both sides have made changes to their official team lists. For Souths, Jeff Lima replaces the suspended Sam Burgess in the starting line-up, while Luke Keary and Josh Starling have been added to the bench. Keary, an exciting young halfback who toured Samoa and New Zealand with the Australian Schools rugby union team in 2010, will be making his NRL debut. Justin Hunt drops off the bench.

Josh Mantellato comes in on the wing for the Knights to make his debut in place of Peter Mata'utia, while Adam Clydesdale drops off the bench for Matt Hilder, who returns to the NRL for the first time since round two.

South Sydney Rabbitohs v Newcastle Knights at ANZ Stadium 7.30pm
Head to Head: Souths 9 Knights 25
Last clash: Round 26 2012 - Souths 18 bt Knights 6 at Hunter Stadium
Tab Sportsbet: Souths $1.43 Knights $2.90
    FootyTAB: Knights +6.5

AAP writes: Competition leaders Souths lose Greg Inglis, Ben Te’o and Chris McQueen to Origin and Sam Burgess to suspension. This will be a good test of their depth. Newcastle fell to the Warriors last week and coach Wayne Bennett’s jokes about not knowing which side get off the bus each week are no longer just that. The Knights hold top four aspirations and a win here will give those a huge boost. The Rabbitohs will be keen to avoid back-to-back losses for the first time this year and Newcastle lack the gamebreakers in the Souths side. Knight Jeremy Smith returns from suspension to bolster their pack.Key: John Sutton. Blues coach Laurie Daley produced an uncomfortable situation with his inability to choose between Sutton and Josh Reynolds. How will Sutton respond to his omission?Tip: Souths

Phil Mitchell writes: Souths’ depth will be tested like never before this season as they strive to bounce back from their loss to Cronulla last week and retain top spot.  The Rabbitohs will be missing Greg Inglis, Ben Te’o and Chris McQueen to State of Origin duty, while Sam Burgess will be serving a one-week suspension. They also have only five days to recover from a tough battle against the Sharks. The only problem for the Knights is that they too are missing key players. Fullback Darius Boyd (Origin) is out, as are the injured Kurt Gidley and Akuila Uate. Rugged lock Jeremy Smith is back from suspension but it’s doubtful  his timely return can lift the Knights to only their second away win in 2013. My tip: Rabbitohs by eight.

RABBITOHS: Nathan Merritt, Andrew Everingham, Beau Champion, Dylan Walker, Bryson Goodwin, John Sutton, Adam Reynolds, Dave Tyrrell, Issac Luke, Roy Asotasi, Ben Lowe, Jeff Lima, Nathan Peats. Interchange: Jason Clark, George Burgess, Luke Keary, Josh Starling.

KNIGHTS: Kevin Naiqama, James McManus, Dane Gagai, Joey Leilua, Josh Mantellato, Jarrod Mullen, Tyrone Roberts, Kade Snowden, Travis Waddell, Willie Mason, Robbie Rochow, Alex McKinnon, Jeremy Smith. Interchange: Matt Hilder, David Fa’alogo, Adam Cuthbertson, Korbin Sims.

    Referees: Gavin Badger, Alan Shortall.
