    • If that was the show case for league worldwide I am sorry but that is not good enough. Please do not try and copy Union with that rubbish. I would suggest taking on Aussie rules on a global scale ...

Live: Australia v New Zealand, Rugby League World Cup Final 2013

There’s not really much you can say about that one. New Zealand were well below their capabilities, and Australia were close to perfect.

The forwards made fantastic metres on every set, and the backline players were deadly every time they got a bit of space. Hayne, Thurston, Morris and Slater were all brilliant.

Sonny Bill Williams won’t be happy with his performance, but perhaps the expectations of the World Player of the Year were higher than on all his team mates, as to a man, they were underwhelming.

But when Australia, with the talent they have, are that clinical in their execution, it’s tough to see how ANY team could keep up with them. Matt King just said that Australia were “on another level tonight” and that’s a very succinct way of putting it.

That’s it from Old Trafford and that’s it from us at LeagueHQ. Thanks for following along, and be sure to do likewise on twitter - @LeagueHQ1 and myself - @TheMattBungard

    Cheers again…time for bed!

IT'S ALL OVER!!! AUSTRALIA ARE WORLD CHAMPIONS!!!

The Man of the Match has been named, and it's Johnathan Thurston. Can't argue with that, he's been excellent.

Thurston puts two more on the scoreboard!

    Australia 34 - New Zealand 2

AUSTRALIA GO 100 METRES!!!!! THERE'S THE ICING ON THE CAKE AS BRETT MORRIS GETS HIS SECOND!!!

Hayne picks off an errant pass inside his own 10m, sprints away and as the chasers closed in he slipped the ball under the arm of Kevin Locke and Brett Morris sprinted away to cap off a perfect performance from Australia!

Fantastic shot from the ground, as the sun sets in Manchester (And the Kiwi's World Cup reign!)

Thurston drops the ball with a certain try in sight!!! A ball was spilled, Hayne picked it up and skipped away but Locke grabbed him from behind and the offload goes to ground!

I don't think it will matter with ten to go, however..

    Crowd: 74,468.

Slater spills a bomb and New Zealand will get a scrum ten metres out..

Thurston splits the defenders but tries to grubber it ahead to an open support player and misses the ball!!

Australia up 26 with a quarter of the game to go..

Vatuvei takes a massive fall just in front of the advertising boards. This in-goals really are an issue. He slips onto the concrete and I'm surprised he's not seriously hurt, as he walks away gingerly.

Thurston from out wide....and it's good!

    Australia 28 - New Zealand 2

A flick pass offload from Fifita finds Morris, who chips ahead to Hayne, who fumbles his regather but volleys the ball forward before it hits the ground and a flying Morris dives on the ball and grounds it in the tiny in-goals before smashing into the fence!

That was special. And it's probably locked up the World Cup!!

MORRIS HAS SCORED!!! AND SLAMMED INTO THE FENCE IN DOING SO!! THAT WAS FANTASTIC!! (if the video ref agrees)

A grubber kick is covered up by the Australians and they'll come away with possession. A Mexican wave has broken out, which is never a good sign.

Sonny Bill carts the ball just over halfway and wins a penalty as the ball is stripped out. The Kiwis desperately need points here.

Slater goes himself on the last and a desperation tackle from Foran stops Billy from nabbing a hat trick!!

An Australian kick is charged down by Matulino and recovered by SBW, and the Kiwis start the set at halfway!

Thurston nails it from the sideline!

    Australia 22 - New Zealand 2

And Billy Slater has scored!!!! First set from the restart!!

Superb short side play from the Aussies, Boyd steams down the left again and after drawing the last man gives it to Slater who crosses within a minute of the second half starting and you'd think that will probably be enough!

    Second half underway!!

Here's Brad Walter's half time thoughts:

Australia are perfectly poised to regain the World Cup after taking 14 point lead at halftime, as defence has been the cornerstone of their performances throughout the tournament.

New Zealand are going to need to chance their hand in the second half as the Kangaroos are giving little opportunities with a conservative but effective playing style.

The Australians are controlling the game through the kicking of skipper Cameron Smith, and halves Johnathan Thurston and Cooper Cronk,Smith's kick to trap Kevin Locke in-goal was a key play and Billy Slater scored on the next set of tackles after latching onto a short kick towards the goal posts from Thurston.

Issac Luke ended a spectacular passage of play with a brilliant try saving tackle on Cronk after centre Jarryd Hayne picked up a spillt kick from Manu Vatuvei and kicked infield. Cronk's try five minutes later was almost as spectacular after Darius Boyd broke into the clear and grubbered ahead.

The loss of winger Roger Tuivasa-Sheck in the eight minute was a blow for the Kiwis and Australia are exploiting the fact Alex Glenn has had to slot into an unfamiliar position. However, there will be questions after the match about how Hayne was allowed to stay on the field when he appeared concussed attempting to tackle Simon Mannering in the opening minutes of the game.

Something to tide you over until the second half, if you'd forgotten how the last final ended!

And that's the break, and it's been a pretty lopsided first half.

Australia's kicking game and forward play have been absolutely superb, and were it not for one moment of brilliance from Issac Luke, the game would be even further gone from New Zealand's grasp.

40 minutes is a long time in a game of footy but at the moment, Australia are in total control. Coach Kearney will have to light a fire under his boys in the sheds if they're to have any chance...at the very least, they need to grab the first try in the second half to have a shout.

Join us in a few minutes time for all the second half action, or let us know your thoughts on twitter - @LeagueHQ1 or myself- @TheMattBungard

Vatuvei puts the accelerator down as he gets the ball 20m out but he can't steamroll five of them!! He gets within a couple of metres but can't get close to scoring before he's pushed over the sideline!

Slater loses the ball near halfway and this is New Zealand's chance to get something going before the break. They really need some points here...

Thurston slots the goal and the margin is out to three scores!

Australia lead 16-2 with four minutes to play in the first half.

Slater nips out from dummy half and traps them offside on the last tackle to win a penalty 35m out! Thurston will take the shot...

Thurston cops a shot in the ribs as he fields a bomb which was allowed to bounce - Alex Glenn administering the big hit!

Thurston nails a kick from out wide and the margin is out to 12!

    Australia 14 - New Zealand 2

Darius Boyd broke down the left before an scuffed grubber kick somehow found it's way to Cooper Cronk who wormed his was past a couple of defenders and planted it down!

Australia have crossed and it's Cronk on the end of a short kick from one of his outside men again!! And this time they surely can't take it off him but we're going upstairs!

So close to a try for New Zealand!! Manu towers over everyone to haul in a bomb, but he's tackled just short of the tryline on the last!!

That is absolutely unbelievable from all involved - A high kick is spilled by Vatuvei in a contest with Hayne, and it was the Parramatta fullback who regathered and angled a kick across his body from right near the sideline, before Cronk regathered and looked CERTAIN to score before Issac Luke managed to get across and stop him from putting the ball down at any point! What a try saver!!

We're going upstairs!!! This would be an absolutely classic try for Australia!!

Well fielded by Locke on his own goal line...the pin-point kicking game of the Aussies is the difference at the moment.

    Australia still lead 8-2

    Thurston adds the extras...

Well there goes any doubts of rustiness! Billy Slater crosses for the opening try of the final!!

Well we didn't think it would be possible with these minuscule in-goal areas, but Australia have forced a drop-out!

A gift right in front as a holding penalty gives the Kiwis a chance to knot it up...and Shaun Johnson obliges!

    2-2 after 15 minutes!

An Australian attacking set ends with another big kick across field, but Hayne's bat back results in a 20m loss before it's dived on by Sam Thaiday and the Kiwis take over in decent position!

Shaun Johnson hoists one high into the air but Billy Slater is equal to it - that penalty goal is all the splits the teams after the first ten.

New Zealand's set comes to an anti-climatic end with a last tackle error, but there's far more serious concerns as Roger Tuivasa-Sheck has left the field with an injury, and Jarryd Hayne lies on the field in pain.

New Zealand will go on their first attack after a ruck penalty. The kick for touch puts them just inside Australia's half!

Slater was cleaned up as he tried to chase through a kick and Australia have a penalty 20 out right in front! Thurston will line-up for two and makes no mistake from close range!

Australia have the first point of the final and lead 2-0!

    First chance!!

After an early NZ error, a crossfield kick is claimed by Hayne but he can't hold on...and after an initial decision of a drop-out, the video ref has given the Kiwis the restart and they'll play it out from their own end.

HERE WE GO!!!! Bromwich takes the first hit up of the final!!

We just had the national anthems followed by a fearsome haka, led by Issac Luke and Jared Waerea-Hargreaves.

Just moments away from kick-off here!

The fans are roaring as the players head out on to the field...It's certainly at atmosphere fitting a classic, lets hope the footy lives up to the hype!

I'm picking the Kangaroos to win by 8. It would be unpatriotic not to. Let us know your predictions in the comments.

    Hi everyone,

We're about 20 minutes away from kick-off here at Old Trafford - and the big news is that Billy Slater WILL play for the Kangaroos, Greg Inglis going back to the centres and Brent Tate being the unlucky one to miss out.

Will Slater's lack of game time be an issue? Will that error in the 2008 final still be in the back of his head? We'll find out shortly.

    • If that was the show case for league worldwide I am sorry but that is not good enough. Please do not try and copy Union with that rubbish. I would suggest taking on Aussie rules on a global scale they have such lop sided games against Ireland. I thought league had a 10 metre law?
