The Dragons have started the year with a win, finishing 44-24 victors in front of almost 20,000 fans at ANZ Stadium. Great start for coach Steve Price, not so for Mick Potter.

They are in again the Dragons! Jason Nightingale breaks through the middle of the field and puts Adam Quinlan in under the post. Dragons lead 44-24 with a minute on the clock.

Tigers trying everything but it's to no avail. Dragons with the ball with three minutes on the clock leading 38-24.

Tigers aren't showing much with the ball, eight minutes remaining but that's game over. Incredible effort from the Dragons to come back from such a slow start. Gareth Widdop has been absolutely superb in his first game for the club.

Mitch Rein burrows over from dummy half and that should seal the deal for St George Illawarra. Soft defence from the Tigers, who are now showing some serious signs of fatigue. Dragons lead 38-24 with 14 minutes remaining.

Widdop is having an afternoon to remember, laying on another try with an inside pass to Tyson Frizell, who runs over the top of Tedesco to score. Dragons lead by eight but this game is far from over. Dragons 32-24 with 18 minutes on the clock.

Michael Witt's dislocated shoulder has been put back in.

No try! Knock on is the ruling as Michael Witt leaves the field with what looks like a shoulder injury. Bad news for St George Illawarra. Kyle Stanley comes on in the halves.

This could be a try to the Dragons! Quinlan is claiming it from a cross-field kick from Widdop - but it's unclear whether Michael Witt knocked it on during the mid-air contest.

Tigers cough up possession close to the line. Dragons on the attack.

Marty Taupau is over. Referee Ashley Klein sent it upstairs, but once again there was insufficient evidence to overturn the original decision and it's a try. Tigers hit back. It's 26-24 with 32 minutes remaining.

Widdop is on fire, slotting it from out wide to give the Dragons a 26-18 lead with 35 minutes on the clock.

It's been awarded after several replays. The Dragons lead 24-18 with a kick to come out wide.

The Dragons are in! The new halves have done the damage! Gareth Widdop breaks through the line and offloads to Michael Witt to score his first try as a Dragon. It's gone upstairs with a hint of an obstruction but it shouldn't be any problem.

We're back for the second half, but it doesn't look like Jack DeBelin will be joining us. He left the field in the first half with a leg injury and hasn't surfaced for the second 40 minutes.

Another penalty against the Tigers. Gareth Widdop gives the Dragons a two point lead at the break, slotting the penalty goal from 10 metres in from touch. Dragons lead 20-18. Big effort to come back from 12-0 down.

Good kick from Widdop, equally impressive tackle from Mitch Rein and a couple of his teammates to drag Marika Koroibete back into the in-goal. Dragons will have one more set before the break.

Brett Morris down. Aaron Woods collects him high around the melon with a clumsy effort. Dragons will get a piggy-back down the field. Woods on report. Just over three minutes remaining in the half.

Word from the Tigers is Fulton is up and walking in the sheds. He obviously won't be back today but good to see he's on his feet.

What a strike from Widdop. He's on fire with the boot. Score locked up at 18-18.

Gerard Beale is in out wide. He crashes his way over from a sweeping backline play. Interesting afternoon of footy. Widdop to convert from the sideline to level the score with eight minutes remaining in the first half.

Dragons are struggling in attack but they've got their third consecutive set on the Tigers line. Not offering much the red and whites.

Dragons continue inviting the Tigers to score. A drop ball 15 metres out of their own line. Corey Paterson drops the ball from the ensuing set, which is followed by a penalty to the Dragons. Scrappy passage of play.

Liam Fulton leaves the field on the medicab in a neck brace but that was only precautionary. It could just be a bad concussion after copping a knee to the head from Tedesco. Gareth Widdop converts from the sideline and now it's 18-12 in favour of the Tigers with 14 minutes remaining in the first half.

This doesn't look good for Fulton. The trainers are being very careful with him trying to get him on the medicab. That's the end of the afternoon for him - let's hope it's nothing too serious.

Dragons hit back through Ben Creagh. It comes after a clash of bodies between Liam Fulton and James Tedesco trying to intercept a Michael Witt chip and chase. The Dragons scored from the next play against a 12-man defensive line. Fulton hasn't moved since and the stretcher is on its way out to the ground. Tigers 18-10 with a kick to come for the Dragons.

It's been awarded but I don't agree. The video referee couldn't overturn the referees' original decision. Ashley Klein said he saw the ball on the ground, so why would he send it upstairs? I think Farah's confidence in celebrating the try might have fooled the referee. Tigers lead 18-6 after 20 minutes.

I think Robbie Farah might have burrowed his way over from close range. It's gone upstairs for another look.

The Wests Tigers celebrate a try by Pat Richards during the round one NRL match against the St George Illawarra Dragons at ANZ Stadium.

Dragons hit back through Tyson Frizell. He did well there Frizell to get through Liam Fulton and Luke Brooks to reach out and slam it down. Back-to-back penalties there from the Tigers really cruelled them. I think we're in for some points this afternoon. The heat will contribute to the fatigue factor. Tigers lead 12-6 after 15 minutes.

Plenty of confidence there from Luke Brooks. A chip over the top and almost scores but Dragons fullback Adam Quinlan gets there in time. Dragons awarded a penalty and will be deep on the attack this set. 13 minutes gone.

TRY! James Tedesco! The speed of the kid. After Liam Fulton cleaned up a drop ball from Brett Morris on half way, Tedesco rocketed through the middle of the field to score beside the posts. WOW! Let's hope we're in for a treat watching him in 2014. Tigers lead 12-0.

This is a terrible start from St George Illawarra. Poor discipline in defence and Michael Witt was caught out in the Tigers' first try.

The Tigers have scored! Welcome back Pat Richards, who scores with his first touch back in the NRL. Lovely ball from James Tedesco to put Richards in. He converts his own try and the Tigers lead 6-0 after five minutes.

Oh dear, Dragons caught offside again. They are inviting the Tigers in for first points.

That should have been a try for the Tigers. A beautiful Luke Brooks grubber is knocked on by Liam Fulton, who should have done better than he did.

Good start for the Tigers. Dragons caught offside in the first set. Tigers to start a new set on the half way line.

And we're off! Dylan Farrell gets us underway. Tigers with first use of the ball as Aaron Woods kickstarts their season.

Team news: Tigers are 1-17, while the Dragons have dropped Dan Hunt back to the bench with Tyson Frizell to start up front. Mike Cooper will play his first game for the club, getting the nod on the bench ahead of Bronson Harrison.

It's a hot afternoon in Sydney's west. How quickly things have changed. Four years ago these two teams fought it out at this very ground in the preliminary final, now it's a clash that's being dubbed the battle for the wooden spoon. I don't think the Dragons have the roster that will see them finish with the spoon. Brett Morris, Jason Nightingale, Gareth Widdop, Gerard Beale, Josh Dugan - it's a handy football team. However for one reason or another they have struggled to get it right under Steve Price. For the Tigers, their fortunes hinge on the sucess of Luke Brooks. It's unfair to place so much expectation on an inexperienced kid, but that's the reality of the task that confronts him.

Michael Chammas writes: These two teams would love to get off to a good start to take the pressure off their under siege coaches. The Dragons are missing Josh Dugan, but with Gerard Beale, Jason Nightingale, Brett Morris and Gareth Widdop at their disposal they could have more points in them than the Tigers. All eyes will be on Luke Brooks to emulate what he did against the Dragons in his only NRL game last year.

    Tip: Dragons by 10

AAP writes: Two sides who desperately need an early win to stave off pressure on their coaches and two teams who have been unlucky with pre-season injuries. The Tigers are missing David Nofoaluma (hamstring), Dene Halatau (ankle) and Tim Moltzen (knee) while the Dragons are without the focus of their attack Josh Dugan. Young gun halfback Luke Brooks is charged with filling the playmaking void at the Tigers left by Benji Marshall, while Gareth Widdop has been asked to do likewise at the spluttering Dragons. Both teams have been tipped to finish at the bottom of the ladder but this could be one of the most exciting and closest games of the round.

Key: Michael Witt. Chosen at halfback by Dragons coach Steve Price instead of Sam Williams. He will want to repay that faith if Price is to last.

DRAGONS: Adam Quinlan, Brett Morris, Dylan Farrell, Gerard Beale, Jason Nightingale, Gareth Widdop, Michael Witt, Jack de Belin, Mitch Rein, Dan Hunt, Leeson Ah Mau, Ben Creagh (capt), Trent Merrin. Interchange: Bronson Harrison, Kyle Stanley, Joel Thompson, Tyson Frizell, Mike Cooper (one to be omitted).
