    Parramatta Eels v Penrith Panthers

    Date
    Sort posts by:

On the evidence of tonight's performance the Eels are going to give a lot of top teams a difficult time this season. At half time it was anyone's game, but a revved up Jarryd Hayne took control, piloting the Eels to a well-deserved win. Apart from Hayne's stellar performance, Nathan Peats was also strong for Parramatta. The Panthers got overrun in the second dig, and without Wallace at half they look a bit devoid of purpose. But they do have an electric backline and it will be Ivan Cleary's job this week to make sure they see more of the ball in attack. A great night for the Eels.

    Eels 32 Panthers 16

    76th min:

That man Hayne was key again. He broke a tackle on the right flank from a scrum and passed to Ken Sio who stepped inside Idris to score. Sandow's conversion swings wide.

    Eels 32 Panthers 16

    73rd min:

Panthers go close again. Segeyaro burst through the Parra defence and tried to get an inside pass to Kingston but the ball went to ground with the line wide open.

    Eels 28 Panthers 16

    71st min:

Jarryd Hayne has been heaps more involved this half - a major reason why the Eels are in front.

    Eels 28 Panthers 16

    68th min:

Fantastic strength from Jarryd Hayne. He ploughed into Moylan from dummyhalf and the Penrith fullback was powerless to stop him. Sandow converts.

    Eels 28 Panthers 16

    64th min:

Panthers go close. Idris's one-handed pass was a delight but Naiqama couldn't keep his boots off the sideline, and the touch judge's flag went up as he dived for the corner. Great sweeping backline movement from the Panthers. They're not done by any stretch.

    Eels 22 Panthers 16

    58th min:

Hayne threw a quick cut-out pass to Radradra and the bearded winger was too strong and fast for the Panthers' outside defence. Sandow's conversion curves into the left upright. No goal.

    Eels 22 Panthers 16

    56th min:

Chris Sandow shows why he was once considered one of the NRL's most exciting players with a brilliant chip and chase that results in a penalty 15m out from the Panthers line.

    Eels 18 Panthers 16

    53rd min:

Radradra has been a revelation this season but Moylan and Soward totally smashed him into touch as he steamrolled toward the line. Great defence Penrith.

    Eels 18 Panthers 16

    50th min:

A Sandow bomb broke like a Shane Warne wrong-un in the in-goal area but a series of dropped balls from both sides cruelled its effect.

    Eels 18 Panthers 16

    47th min:

Eels hit back. Manu Ma'u threw himself at the defensive line and maoeuvered the ball onto the paint. Great determination. His first try in the NRL. Sandow converts.

    Eels 18 Panthers 16

    45th min:

Jarryd Hayne is a handful in attack every time he gets the ball. Has he got the best fend in league or what?

    Eels 12 Panthers 16

    43rd min:

Matt Moylan was key: his soft hands pass put Whare into the gap, and the centre-three quarter easily stepped inside Jarryd Hayne to score. Moylan converts.

    Eels 12 Panthers 16

    42nd min:

Adam Docker, who made some blistering runs in the first half for the Panthers, is temporarily off the field with bleeding above the left eye.

    Eels 12 Panthers 10

That was an awesome first half: both teams attacking the line with extreme prejudice. Eels hooker Nathan Peats has been the standout with smart dummyhalf running and bone-crunching defence, while Isaac John has been solid for the Panthers. The Eels will be filthy they let in a try on the bell but they've shown enough to suggest they can win this game. Back in five for what should be a spectacular second half.

    Eels 12 Panthers 10

    39th min:

Lewis Brown took on the marker, dummied, fooled Will Hopoate and plunged over. Great finish to the half for the men in hot pink. Moylan totally fluffs the conversion, pushing it 10m wide of the right upright.

    Eels 12 Panthers 10

    37th min:

End to end stuff: Isaac John scoots over from 10m out but the pass was forward.

    Eels 12 Panthers 6

    34th min:

Almost  a four-pointer. An askew midfield bomb from Corey Norman was allowed to bounce by Moylan - a cardinal error - and the ball fell into quick blue and gold hands, as a galloping Will Hopate finished off out wide. Spectacular stuff.

Alas for Parra fans, the vid ref ruled Peni Terepo was offside from the kick.

    Eels 12 Panthers 6

    30th min:

Great defence Parramatta. A tasty flick pass from Dean Whare hit Dave Simmons in the chest down the right flank but Radradra barrelled him into touch.

    Eels 12 Panthers 6

    27th min:

Ex-Rabbitoh Nathan Peats caps a great start to the  match by diving over from dummy half.  Elijah Taylor was way out of position. Sandow kicks his second.

    Eels 12 Panthers 6

    23rd min:

Parra get their second penalty. Elijah Taylor inside the 10. Eels attack 40m out.

    Eels 6 Panthers 6

    20th min:

Panther possession pays off. A great infield run from Moylan, stepping away from a number of grasping Eels defenders, before offloading to the bearded Isaac John who zipped into a giant hole to score. Soward converts.

    Eels 6 Panthers 6

    19th min:

Penalties are 5-1 to the Panthers. Despite being behind on the scoreboard they've had most of the possession.

    Eels 6 Panthers 0

    16th min:

Willy Tonga has raced 85m to score after intercepting a Matt Moylan pass meant for his winger. Only Kevin Kingston chased him and the Penrith hooker was never a show. Great effort from the 30-year-old Eel. Conversion successful.

    Eels 6 Panthers 0

    15th min:

The ground is already looking chopped up. There's been a lot of rain this week in western Sydney.

    Eels 0 Panthers 0

    12th min:

Panthers go close. Soward chips into the corner and Naiqama gets a hand to the ball with the line wide open, but he can't hold onto it. Enterprising stuff.

    Eels 0 Panthers 0

    10th min:

The Panthers attack is also looking threatening, with Idris and Moylan injecting themselves into backline movements.

    Eels 0 Panthers 0

    8th min:

Sustained Eels pressure ebbs away as Edwards drops the ball and Idris scoops up the pigskin.

    Eels 0 Panthers 0

    7th min:

Nathan Peats is smashing it from dummy half, carving up the Panthers defence with smart running.

    Eels 0 Panthers 0

    5th min:

Chris Sandow has looked composed so far, with some good kicks for territory. Good to see the little fella back after all the troubles he's had.

    Eels 0 Panthers 0

    2nd min:

At the end of the first set, Soward drives the ball deep into Eels territory. A good start from the Panthers, with Kevin Kingston's burrowing run a highlight.

    Eels 0 Panthers 0

A bit of trivia: Of the 87 matches between these two clubs, Parra have won 52.

Line-up news: Ex-Australian Schoolboy Pauli Pauli is in for Kelepi Tanginoa. It will be the young Eel's NRL debut.

For the Panthers, Isaac John is in for the still injured Peter Wallace.
