    Newcastle Knights v Penrith Panthers

    Sort posts by:

Penrith have a run up a six tries to two victory over a limp and uninspiring Newcastle side. With their gun backline firing - Whare, Mansour, Moylan and Idris were outstanding - plus excellent performances from playmakers Wallace and Soward, they were way too creative and energetic for the lethargic Knights. Despite having one of the most fancied sets of backs in the game, the Knights were rudderless in attack and lacked penetration in the kill zone. The Panthers defence was also key: the Knights looked outnumbered whenever they went wide. This result on home turf must be a huge disappointment for Wayne Bennett, but Panthers coach Ivan Cleary will return to foot of the mountains a happy man: his charges are playing a well-organised yet enterprising brand of footy that has semi finals written all over it.

    Knights 10 Panthers 32

    79th minute:

James Segeyaro dummied and stepped through some paper-thin Knights defence to score. Soward misses the conversion.

    Knights 10 Panthers 32

    77th minute:

Soward kicks a penalty from right in front after a Kurt Gidley infringement.

    Knights 10 Panthers 28

    76th minute:

And there's another example of the Knights' rudderless attacking game. Roberts made a beaut break, drew the defence, then threw a regulation pass to Rochow, but the Knights No.12 left the ball behind. It was like his body was temporarily taken over by aliens or something. He had know idea.

    Knights 10 Panthers 26

    74th minute:

    Today's crowd is 13,682.

    Knights 10 Panthers 26

    73rd minute:

Leilua bursts down the left flank but his pass ricochets into touch. It was a bit throw and hope really.

    Knights 10 Panthers 26

    71st minute:

Telling stat: the Knights have only completed 23 out of 35 sets.

    Knights 10 Panthers 26

    69th minute:

Tyrone Peachey is an exciting prospect: he caught and kicked the ball in the one motion to execute an expert grubber on the run.

    Knights 10 Panthers 26

    67th minute:

Mullen turns things around with a 40/20 attempt Moylan pushes into touch trying to salvage the ball.

    Knights 10 Panthers 26

    66th minute:

Wayne Bennett looks a lonely old man in the coach's box. His charges lack spark today.

    Knights 10 Panthers 26

    65th minute:

Gotta rap Josh Mansour. He's clocked a mountain of metres and made the Knights defence look amateur at times.

    Knights 10 Panthers 26

    62nd minute:

The Knights are dominating possession but can't get over the stripe. Mullen's sixth tackle option - the half chip-half bomb - is being easily defended.

    Knights 10 Panthers 26

    60th minute:

The Panthers defence on the edge of the ruck is outstanding - it's why the Knights can't get any penetration.

    Knights 10 Panthers 26

    56th minute:

The Knights are making a last stand to salvage this game but their attack breaks down in the Panthers 20 because Gagai runs on the sixth when a repeat sixth beckoned. Dumb tactics.

    Knights 10 Panthers 26

    51st minute:

Segeyaro is a handful every time he gets the ball in broken play. The Panthers look a heap more threatening with pill in hand than the Knights.

    Knights 10 Panthers 26

    49th minute:

Joey Leilua hang your head in shame. After Robbie Rochow made a break down the left side he threw a blind, one-arm pass to no-one in particular and Whare swooped. The Panthers No.3 then bolted 65m to score under the posts. Soward converts.

    Knights 10 Panthers 26

    47th minute:

From a deft Soward chip Idris batted the ball backwards to Josh Mansour who bolted in unattended. Soward misses the conversion.

    Knights 10 Panthers 20

    45th minute:

Fa'alogo spills the ball on the halfway line. There was nothing sinister there - just poor handling. Panthers attack.

    Knights 10 Panthers 16

    43rd minute:

Newcastle's backline movement in the Panthers' 20 ends with a dropped ball and a confusing lack of options.

    Knights 10 Panthers 16

    42nd minute:

Newcastle force a dropout thanks to Leilua's enthusiastic chase and crunching tackle of Moylan.

    Knights 10 Panthers 16

The sun's back out at Hunter Stadium.

This has been a hardfought encounter played out in teeming rain, but the Panthers are in front by six because their playmaking is superior. The Knights still look a bit one-dimensional in attack, while Jamie Soward and Peter Wallace have shown more spark than the Newcastle creatives. Of course, both teams will have to rein in their attacking instincts in the slippery conditions, but unless the much-feted Knights backline can make more of an impression, this match is the Panthers to win.

    Knights 10 Panthers 16

    39th minute:

Newcastle are still in this game due to the wet conditions. They're playing catch-up most of the time but the Panthers' fancy moves aren't coming off because it's too slippery.

    Knights 10 Panthers 16

    37th minute:

Great defence from Dean Whare, barrelling Leilua into touch. Inspirational stuff. The pendulum definitely swinging the Panthers' way.

    Knights 10 Panthers 16

    34th minute:

Injury update: Nigel Plum is compos mentis and he's having stitches sewn into two gashes.

    Knights 10 Panthers 16

    32nd minute:

Vintage Jamie Soward. He pivoted, feigned to kick, skipped a bit then hit warp speed as he scooted away from some pretty ordinary Newcastle defence to score. He boots over the extras.

    Knights 10 Panthers 16

    30th minute:

Idris is a one-man demolition team when he gets the ball at pace but he only ever seems to receive the pill when he's standing still.

    Knights 10 Panthers 10

    28th minute:

Using the wet field to his advantage, Dane Gagai skidded over the line as Jamahl Idris tried in vein to hold him up. It was great footwork from the Knights centre to get himself into position to score. Gidley converts.

    Knights 10 Panthers 10

    26th minute:

Nigel Plum is out cold. While attempting a chargedown on Mullen, he smashed headfirst into the Knights' playmaker's shoulder. Seemed to get struck in the temple. The stretcher and medicab are on the field.  Let's hope he's OK. Meanwhile, Kurt Gidley is back on the field.

    Knights 4 Panthers 10

    24th minute:

Moylan is on fire as he splits the Knights' defence with a scything run that ends with Whare held up over the line.

    Knights 4 Panthers 10

    20th minute:

A bit of deadset Matt Moylan magic. From a grubber that had "going dead" written all over it, he flung his arm at the ball as it floated over the deadball line, flicked it back in play, then after a catalog of Knights handling errors, fell on the pill to score. Soward converts as thunder breaks over the ground.

    Knights 4 Panthers 10

    19th minute:

It's started raining quite heavily, which means both teams will have to play a little tighter.

    Knights 4 Panthers 4

    17th minute:

Kurt Gidley wobbles off the paddock. Brent Kite steamrolled the Knights veteran and he started seeing stars - so the concussion rule comes into play.

    Knights 4 Panthers 4

    13th minute:

Uate is a bit ginger on his feet after a textbook tackle from Nigel Plum. So far it's an arm wrestle with both sides trying to gain territorial ascendancy through judicious kicking.

    Knights 4 Panthers 4

    12th minute:

Darius Boyd enlivens the crowd with a fearless run at the Panthers' defence.

    Knights 4 Panthers 4

    10th minute:

Exciting backline play saw David Simmons fly over in the corner. The Knights' defence was unable to cope with what was a fairly routine move. Great finish from Simmons. Soward's conversion swings wide.

    Knights 4 Panthers 4

    8th minute:

Frustrating error: Mullen drops the pill on the halfway line. Panthers launch an attack.

    Knights 4 Panthers 0

    6th minute:

Mullen ran at the defence, sent a quick pass to Leilua who flicked on to McManus in the lefthand corner. Great play from Mullen - showed he's unafraid to take the ball to the line. Gidley's kick is unsuccessful.

    Knights 4 Panthers 0

    4th minute:

Uate snaffles a Wallace bomb. That'll give the Fijian flyer confidence under the high ball.

    Knights 0 Panthers 0

    3rd minute:

Wallace kicks out in the tackle and Tyrone Roberts cops a face full of studs. The crowd boos.

    Knights 0 Panthers 0

The Knights are playing in blue and pink today as a Mother's Day gesture.

Just spotted a "We are with you all the way Alex M" banner in the crowd. McKinnon continues to inspire a city.

A minute's silence for former chocolate soldier Ross Gigg who died earlier this week. He played 105 first grade games, scoring 31 tries. A Panthers legend of the 70s and 80s.

Late Panthers lineup info: Kevin Kingston is out. Segeyaro comes into the starting side and Isaah Yeo is on the bench.

It's 21 degrees - a mild but cloudy autumn Mother's Day in Newcastle. The Knights are quietly confident they can lift themselves out of the cellar with a win at home.

NEWCASTLE KNIGHTS v PENRITH PANTHERS at Hunter Stadium, 2.00pm

Michael Chammas writes: If the Knights are going to play finals football this year, they need to begin their charge against Penrith on Sunday. They have been one of the most disappointing teams to start the season, but have had plenty of adversity to overcome. They need to win this game but Penrith won't be easy to overcome.
