A disciplined second half performance has seen the Roosters turn around a six-point half-time deficit to beat the Knights 29-12. To their credit, the Newcastle men didn't fold under the weight of a truckload of Roosters possession, but the Tricolours were way too strong, pinning the Novocastrians in their own 20 for long periods. The Roosters' best were Tuivasa-Sheck - he was magic in attack - and halves Maloney and Pearce who continued their recent good form. In the forwards Sam Moa and Jake Friend were the standouts. The Knights couldn't get out of first gear in the second stanza - handling errors thwarting their progress up field - but young fullback Jake Mamo turned in a strong performance. He is a star of the future. A solid if unconvincing win for the Roosters. Back to the drawing board for the Knights.

    79th minute:

Isaac Liu scooted over in the corner, running onto a cutout pass from Maloney. The Knights have defended valiantly this half but they look very tired. Maloney misses with the kick.

    Roosters 29 Knights 12

    77th minute:

Both Maloney and Pearce have steeped up a gear this half, but it's been the Roosters' defence that has detroyed the Knights.

    Roosters 24 Knights 12

    75th minute:

The sealer. Maloney pots a field goal from 20m out. Smart thinking from the five-eighth. Game over.

    Roosters 25 Knights 12

    73rd minute:

Jeremy Smith is leaving the field concussed after copping an accidental elbow from Waerea-Hargreaves.

    Roosters 24 Knights 12

    71st minute:

Tuivasa-Sheck goes off after being flattened in the tackle by Gagai. He looks OK, though.

    Roosters 24 Knights 12

    69th minute:

The Knights haven't been in Roosters territory this half.

    Roosters 24 Knights 12

    66th minute:

Uate has spilled the pill 10m out from the Novocastrians' line. He's filthy with himself. He's barely touched the ball this half but that was shocking.

    Roosters 24 Knights 12

    64th minute:

The Roosters have a 14 from 14 completion rate this half. It was only 14 from 19 in the first 40 minutes.

    Roosters 24 Knights 12

    61st minute:

Jake Friend burrowed over after Pearce slalomed past a couple of lazier Knights. Maloney converts from in front. The Knights are gone.

    Roosters 24 Knights 12

    60th minute:

Maloney busts Newcastle up the guts only for Jeremy Smith to bring him down with a desperation tackle. Smith is trying his heart out.

    Roosters 18 Knights 12

    58th minute:

It's a real test of the Knights' mettle now. Will they fold under the Roosters' onslaught?

    Roosters 18 Knights 12

    53rd minute:

A leaping McManus lost the bombed ball in mid-air as Kenny-Dowall plucked the synthetic pigskin from his grasp to score. Real Aussie Rules stuff. Maloney converts.

    50th minute:

A flying McManus fumbled the Pearce bomb and Tuivasa-Sheck was there to pick up the crumbs. Soft try really. Maloney converts.

    Roosters 12 Knights 12

    49th minute:

Uate is looking dangerous in attack for the Knights. He is causing the Roosters big problems around the ruck.

    Roosters 6 Knights 12

    46th minute:

Poor Tricolours attacking set ends with an over-cooked grubber from Tuivasa-Sheck.

    Roosters 6 Knights 12

    45th minute:

Mullen is looking a bit ginger at the mo. Can't see him lasting the half.

    Roosters 6 Knights 12

    43rd minute:

The slippery conditions aren't putting Tuivasa-Sheck off. His jinking runs are one of the few Rooster highlights.

    Roosters 6 Knights 12

We have a potential boilover on the cards. The cellar-dwelling Knights have exploited Roosters complacency to go to the break with a 12-6 lead. The Roosters have been their own worst enemies, making a truckload of handling errors. They have looked good in the Knights' 20 - Minichiello and Tuivasa-Shek are on fire - but have coughed up so much ball the Newcastle boys have been let off the hook time after time. For the Knights, Willie Mason and Jeremy Smith have been inspirational up front, while young gun Jake Mamo is absolutely electric at the back. Can they hold on in the second half or will the Roosters' come roaring back. The second half will be a belter.

    Roosters 6 Knights 12

    37th minute:

The weight of possession pays off. Jake Mamo crashes over in the corner after bagging a smart cut-out pass. Great finishing from the youngster. Roberts converts from the sideline.

    Roosters 6 Knights 12

    36th minute:

From a dropout, fearless Frenchman Remi Casty steamed up the guts of the Newie defence... but dropped the ball in the tackle. These errors are costing the Roosters badly.

    Roosters 6 Knights 6

    34th minute:

Newcastle end an attacking six with a fairly ordinary Roberts grubber. The Knights lack creative penetration. They've had most of the possession.

    Roosters 6 Knights 6

    31st minute:

Gee the Knights look vulnerable defending in their own 20. The Roosters have only been their twice but they've quickly exposed Newcastle's tackling frailties.

    Roosters 6 Knights 6

    30th minute:

Roosters go close. They had the overlap on the left side but Newcastle No.1 Jake Mamo stuck out a mitt and deflected the ball into touch.

    Roosters 6 Knights 6

Roosters forward Sonny Bill Williams is tackled by the Newcastle defence.

    28th minute:

Houston has been a deadset tackling machine for the Knights. He's keeping the Newcastle defensive line solid.

    Roosters 6 Knights 6

    26th minute:

Geez Willis Meehan is a big unit: 115kg and 195cm. When he gets a head of steam up, Newcastle fans shudder.

    Roosters 6 Knights 6

    23rd minute:

The Knights are not rolling over - they're really taking it up to the Tricolours. They're making about 70m every six, and have completed 10 out of 11 sets.

    Roosters 6 Knights 6

    21st minute:

Uate powered through the Roosters' defence and looked try-bound but Minichiello shoelaced him 40m out. Great fullback's tackle from the veteran.

    Roosters 6 Knights 6

    20th minute:

Sam Moa is at his bulldozing best. The Roosters are making 15m with every hit-up. The Knights look vulnerable.

    Roosters 6 Knights 6

    18th minute:

Too easy. SBW attracted three defenders and offloaded to Tuivasa-Shekm, who shimmied over. The Newcastle defence was AWOL. Maloney converts. That was Easts' first visit to the Knights' 20.

    Roosters 6 Knights 6

    16th minute:

Good signs for Easts. Minichiello slices through the defence but the attack comes a cropper down the right flank.

    Roosters 0 Knights 6

    15th minute:

The Roosters have the fumbles at the mo. MacDonald has a bad case of butterfingers.

    Roosters 0 Knights 6

    12th minute:

Knights backline movement ends with Gagai smashed into touch 2m out. Good defence Roosters. Enterprising attack Knights.

    Roosters 0 Knights 6

    10th minute:

Waerea-Hargeaves makes a hash of the play the ball and the Knights get the scrumfeed 30m out. Roosters need to pull their finger out.

    Roosters 0 Knights 6

    6th minute:

Jeremy Smith barrelled over from 10m with barely a hand laid on him after a bullocking Mason run. Roosters look complacent. Roberts converts.

    Roosters 0 Knights 6

    5th minute:

Gidley makes a play for the line but Tuivasa-Shek holds him up with an awesome power tackle. Knights dominating so far.

    Roosters 0 Knights 0

    4th minute:

Knights bag a penalty 20m out for hanging on in the tackle but Clydsdale almost knocks on from the tap.

    Roosters 0 Knights 0

    2nd minute:

Gidley, playing in the No.9 jersey, snaffles a Pearce bomb for his first touch of the game... before big Sam Moa drives him into the turf.

    Roosters 0 Knights 0

Can't wait for Sonny Bill Williams and Willie Mason to butt heads tonight. They have a lot of history.

Not a massive crowd at Allianz for tonight's match between the high-flying Roosters and the low-riding Knights. The Roosters have won six of their last seven and are heavily favoured to continue Newcastle's season of pain. Their lineup is unchanged except for the inclusion of debutant Willis Meehan in place of Kane Evans. Kurt Gidley is back at fullback for the Knights with Darius Boyd on Origin duty. Wayne Bennett will be hoping the NRL's takeover of the Knights this week will have the desired settling effect on his charges, but the Novocastrians are still long odds to bag the two points. If they can make a show of it early on, this clash could be a cracker.

Tom Decent writes: It's been two months since Newcastle won a game of footy; they beat Canberra back in round six. On the other hand the Roosters are one of the form teams of comp and having notched up six wins from their past seven starts. Aidan Guerra, Daniel Tupou and Michael Jennings are busy with Origin duties, but Mitchell Pearce and James Maloney are in good enough form that they should be able to orchestrate a comfortable Chooks win.

AAP writes:  The last time these two sides met the Knights were playing to keep their 2013 season alive in the preliminary final. This week they're faced with the same scenario, albeit at the season's halfway point. Having lost six straight, the Knights have slumped to second last, and another loss here will extinguish any hopes they have of reaching the finals. To make the challenge harder, they've lost Beau Scott and Darius Boyd to Origin, as well as Kade Snowden to suspension. The Roosters have lost Origin stars Aidan Guerra, Michael Jennings and Daniel Tupou, but have ample firepower in their absence and will be brimming full of confidence after smashing the Storm last week.

Key: Sonny Bill Williams was devastating during the Origin series in 2013, he'll look to carve up an ageing Knights pack with his agile footwork and unrivalled offloads.

ROOSTERS: Anthony Minichiello, Nene Macdonald, Mitchell Aubusson, Shaun Kenny-Dowall, Roger Tuivasa-Sheck, James Maloney, Mitchell Pearce, Jared Waerea-Hargreaves, Jake Friend, Sam Moa, Dylan Napa, Sonny Bill Williams, Frank-Paul Nuuausala. Interchange: Isaac Liu, Remi Casty, Kane Evans, Willis Meehan, Daniel Mortimer (one to be omitted).

KNIGHTS: Jake Mamo, Josh Mantellato, Dane Gagai, James McManus, Akuila Uate, Jarrod Mullen, Tyrone Roberts, David Fa’alogo, Kurt Gidley (capt), Willie Mason, Chris Houston, Robbie Rochow, Jeremy Smith. Interchange: Adam Clydsdale, Korbin Sims, Joseph Tapine, Clint Newton.
