    • Seriously how can Price have a job after this? He must come from the Ricky Stuart school of coaching. You need to demonstrate an ability to turn a good side into a bad one in order to pass.

Parramatta Eels v St George Illawarra Dragons

    Date

    Ash Gray

    Sort posts by:

Parramatta obliterated a poor St George Illawarra side this afternoon. Lethal backline play from Hayne, Hopoate and Sio gave the Eels a massive attacking advantage, while Chris Sandow's golden boot created havoc time after time in the Dragons' defence. The Red V were sluggish in the second stanza - their forays in to the Parramatta half were few and far between and lacked cohesion and spark. Add in a truckload of basic errors and the Dragons were never a chance. Benji Marshall had a promising first 40 minutes, but like the rest of his teammates, looked out of sorts in the second dig. He can only get better. A great win for the Eels, but it's back to the drawing board for the under-performing Dragons.

    Eels 36 Dragons 0

    79th minute:

    The crowd is 18,631.

    Eels 36 Dragons 0

    77th minute:

Sandow is kicking as if the ball's on a string: he can do no wrong this half.

    Eels 36 Dragons 0

    74th minute:

If The Eels can keep a clean sheet it will be the first time since 2009. Oh no, Marshall is copping it from the crowd for throwing a touchline-bound pass reminiscent of his baddest Tiger days.

    Eels 36 Dragons 0

    71st minute:

Hayne stepped off his left foot, befuddled Mitch Allgood and barged over for the four-pointer. But how soft was that Dragons defence? Soft as butter. Sandow makes it six out of six.

    Eels 30 Dragons 0

    69th minute:

The Dragons have been steamrolled this half, so much so that on the rare occasions they've attacked, they've either lacked confidence or produced yet more schoolboy errors.

    Eels 30 Dragons 0

    67th minute:

Ken Sio and Willy Hopoate's brilliant combination play is killing the Dragons down the left flank.

    Eels 30 Dragons 0

    64th minute:

More Hayne magic: a fantastic no-look inside ball to Pauli Pauli who darted over from 5m out. Sandow converts.

    Eels 30 Dragons 0

    60th minute:

Hayne shows why he has the inside running to be the NSW Origin No.1, bootlace tackling a rampaging Brett Morris, who had slipped into a massive gap.

    Eels 24 Dragons 0

    58th minute:

Sandow's kicking is sensational today. From a goal-line drop, he smashed the ball into touch 11m out so the Eels could get the scrum feed. Only the super confident and super skilled can do that.

    Eels 18 Dragons 0

    57th minute:

Widdop never stops trying but his chip-kick from 20m out is easily intercepted by Hopoate who is having a pearler.

    Eels 18 Dragons 0

    56th minute:

Genius kick from Sandow 10m out: he looked one way and banana'd the other, only for a knock-on to scupper a try.

    Eels 24 Dragons 0

    52nd minute:

The Eels are going in hard on the man in the No.19 jersey: Benji Marshall. His collar is ripped and his confidence is down as he throws an impossible to get to pass.

    Eels 18 Dragons 0

    49th minute:

A fairly scrappy and long backline move that ended with a flourish as Sandow set up Sio in the corner. The Dragons just weren't committed enough to shut down the ball. Sandow converts from the sideline.

    Eels 24 Dragons 0

    46th minute:

The Eels are running wild up the middle of the ruck: Peats split the Dragons defence with a dummyhalf run that totally flatfooted the red and white. Signs not good for the Dragons.

    Eels 18 Dragons 0

    43rd minute:

Bulldozing run from Paulo, trampling all over Mitch Rein, then setting up Hayne to score under the crossbar. There were a lot of Dragons ball-watching. Sandow converts.

    Eels 18 Dragons 0

    42nd minute:

Mike Cooper has made several bustling runs up the guts. He'll need to make several more this half.

    Eels 12 Dragons 0

The Eels go into the dressing sheds having dominated the first half, thanks to a glut of possession and a Dragons side that continues to make fundamental errors. Hayne, Norman and Ma'u have been the Fruitpickers' best, and hooker Nathan Peats is having another impressive game. The Dragons have had some spirited attacking surges but still look a bit disjointed in attack.  So... how has Benji Marshall played? He was panting a little towards the end of the half, but after a quiet start he showed enough touches to suggest he will be a smart addition to this St George Illawarra side. Josh Dugan has excelled at fullback, but he hasn't had the support his opposite number Hayne has had in attack. If the Dragons can gel better in attack they might be a chance of getting the chocolates, but at this stage the Eels are looking good for the two points.

    Eels 12 Dragons 0

    39th minute:

Corey Norman has been very busy at five-eighth - he's sparked a number of the Eels' attacks.

    Eels 12 Dragons 0

    35th minute:

Marshall has shown a few of his signature tricks: the no-look pass has got a look-in, and a smart kick from a 20m tap had the Eels back-pedalling 80m.

    Eels 12 Dragons 0

    33rd minute:

Mike Cooper threw a dreadful pass to Marshall and the ball spilled out the back for Norman to swoop and run 75m to score. Sandow converts. Too many errors from the Dragons.

    Eels 12 Dragons 0

    30th minute:

Trademark Marshall magic: he threw a beautiful short ball that resulted in what looked like a try but the ref ruled it forward. Marshall is blowing up at the ref.

    Eels 6 Dragons 0

    28th minute:

Dugan has made a couple of penetrating runs. He's determined to show Laurie Daley he's the business.

    Eels 6 Dragons 0

    27th minute:

The Eels' sixth tackle options have been a tad lame. Sandow has been reluctant to bomb and his grubbers have been a bit how's yer father.

    Eels 6 Dragons 0

    24th minute:

Will Hopoate is in hot form this arvo: he's just pulled off another massive one-on-one strip. Eels attack.

    Eels 6 Dragons 0

    23rd minute:

Both sides have looked good with the ball, but the Eels have made less errors, which has enabled them to attack more.

    Eels 6 Dragons 0

    21st minute:

Nathan Peats charged down the blind side and threw a smart cut-out pass to Sio, who went in unattended. Sandow converts.

    Eels 6 Dragons 0

    19th minute:

Ben Creagh has a bloody gash on his forehead. He's gone off to be patched up.

    Eels 0 Dragons 0

    17th minute:

Marshall has thrown a dodgy pass that was intercepted by Tonga. Shades of his final matches with theTigers.

    Eels 0 Dragons 0

    16th minute:

Red V go close. Dragons attacked down the left side, after Marshall skipped and threw a neat pass to Beale. Smart back-up play from Morris saw Widdop grubber towards the line only for Beale to be impeded by Hopoate in his ball chase. Penalty Dragons.

    Eels 0 Dragons 0

    14th minute:

Great strip, Will Hopoate: rips the ball out of Gareth Widdop's hands and sets up an Eels attack 45m out.

    Eels 0 Dragons 0

    12th minute:

Turnover to the Dragons after an enterprising six ends with Hopoate held up a metre out. The Fruitpickers have been reluctant to kick on the sixth so far.

    Eels 0 Dragons 0

    10th minute:

The Dragons go wide 15m out, but Dugan, who has been in everything, throws a bullet of a pass that flashes pass Brett Morris into touch.

    Eels 0 Dragons 0

    9th minute:

The Eels have had most of the possession, but the Dragons have just won piggy back penalties and are on the attack 30m out. It ends with Dugan flashing into the backline and grubbering for a repeat six. Mission accomplished.

    Eels 0 Dragons 0

    6th minute:

Hayne throws an audacious 20m pass off his own deadball line but he was just out and it's a goal-line drop. Marshall has only touched the ball once.

    Eels 0 Dragons 0

    4th minute

Corey Norman taken out after a grubber: penalty Eels, 5m out. Ma'u puts the head down and takes it up hard.

    Eels 0 Dragons 0

    3rd minute:

Eels get the first penalty: Dragons inside the 10. Parra attack 40m out.

    Eels 0 Dragons 0

    1st minute:

Marshall gets involved straight away, helping out in the tackle, but Jarry Hayne is already proving a handful, carving up down the right flank in the next play.

    Eels 0 Dragons 0

The ground is nearly full: must be at least 18,000 here.

A minute's silence for St George legend Reg Gasnier.

The Eels have won the toss and will run north to south.

Pirtek Stadium is drenched in glorious sunshine for today's clash. Everyone is excited about Benji's return and I'll endeavour to give regular updates on his contributions.

Also looking forward to the clash between Dugan and Hayne, which has the prize of an Origin jersey on offer.

Michael Chammas writes: Benji Marshall's first game in the big Red V has the attention of everyone in rugby league. How will the one-time world's best player go? Will Parramatta maintain their unbeaten record at Pirtek Stadium this year? The battle between Josh Dugan and Jarryd Hayne will be worth the price of admission.

    • Great Performance Parra.
Even better when you consider it was a 4 and a half day turnaround and you beat 2 clubs Illawarra and St Merge. Lot of mistakes in your own 20 though. A good team (maybe a merger of 3 or 4 clubs lets call them the SG Illawarra Sharks) may make you pay for it. Anyway Enjoy I did.

    • They will pay big money to a Union reject and past his good playing days. Everyone knew that he was not doing much during his last year at Tigers yet given big money. The Sharks are surely laughing.

    • No longer a Benji fan, but he has no chance when the team plays like this. Wonder if he is regretting not going to the Sharks -- at least they have a spine.

    • Seriously how can Price have a job after this? He must come from the Ricky Stuart school of coaching. You need to demonstrate an ability to turn a good side into a bad one in order to pass.

      • As a born and bred Dragon supporter, it is all painful to watch. Seem to train hard whenever I see them, but it is not transferring to the pitch. Man-management issues methinks. Bye bye Price please.

Memo to Peter Doust: Don't be a bloody idiot and sign Matthew Elliott as a replacement - would go even further backwards.

      • Benji's not the problem. It's the alleged forwards who refuse to tackle
