Live blog: Tigers v Sharks

Date

Glenn Jackson

That's it from me for today. The Tigers will be disappointed with their performance but pleased, obviously, with the result. The Sharks will be disappointed with the result but pleased with their performance. Todd Carney has begun his stint with the club in the right fashion, helping the Sharks to lead late in the contest after trailing by eight points at the halftime break. But you can never discount the Tigers, especially at Leichhardt Oval. They have stolen many games in this way. For all the news from both teams and analysis of the match, see tomorrow's Sydney Morning Herald, or smh.com.au. Thanks for joining me.

So the Tigers get away with this one. Benji's wobbly field-goal from distance shatters the Sharks, just creeping in inside the left-hand upright. The Sharks were the better side in the second half but the Tigers scored a late try through Beau Ryan before Marshall's magic from 35 metres out finished their opponents off in extra time.

82 min: The Tigers win it. Benji Marshall with the golden-point field goal. 17-16.

81 min: The Sharks' kick-off hits the posts, giving them immediate possession. Todd Carney's field-goal attempt is charged down. Tigers have the ball.

80 min: 16-all at the end of regulation time and we go into golden point for the second time on the opening weekend of the season.

78 min: Robbie Farah drives the ball into touch and the Sharks will have to go the length of the field to avoid golden point. That's just what the players need on this day. The players are cramping everywhere.

77 min: Marshall misses from touch. 16-all.

76 min: TRY to Tigers. Beau Ryan grubbers for himself out wide and scores. Benji Marshall now has a conversion attempt from out wide to give the Tigers the lead. 16-all.

73 min: PENALTY. Carney converts and the Sharks now lead 16-12. Slipping away from the Tigers.

71 min: Nathan Gardner takes Benji Marshall's attacking kick beautifully. Blake Ayshford then gives away a cheap penalty.

68 min: Carney has really grown into this contest. He comes up with a settling kick into touch just when his side needed it. He is showing the composure the Sharks need right now.

67 min: Benji with another cute grubber but Beau Ryan can't ground the ricochet. Gareth Ellis does but the Sharks have the ball again.

66 min: A lot of tired men out there. Next try wins it, I reckon. The Sharks look the more likely right now.

63 min: Spoke to soon about Colin Best. He is penalised for a double movement. The Tigers can breath a sigh of relief.

62 min: Beau Ryan catches Nathan Gardner high and the Sharks have the ball deep in Tigers territory again. Ryan is placed on report.

61 min: Colin Best has come up with some crucial plays today. This time he brings down Tom Humble on the fly after the Tigers fullback charged onto a bobbling Carney kick.

60 min: Carney finds his radar and converts. The Sharks take the lead, by 14-12.

58 min: TRY to Cronulla. And who else but Carney? The halfback steps a la Benji Marshall from the first half and scores just to the right of the posts. We have a good finish ahead of us. 12-all.

57 min: Tigers drop-out. Sharks have a big opportunity to capitalise on their pressure.

56 min: Todd Carney is beginning to assert himself; a good run and attracts a penalty. The Sharks have been the better side early in the first half but the momentum can change quickly.

55 min: The Tigers with some last-tackle razzle dazzle but the Sharks survive.

52 min: TRY to Cronulla. Todd Carney with a good ball and Colin Best with an even better take. Best gets the try. Carney's conversion attempt goes wide though. Tigers lead 12-8.

50 min: The Sharks have come alive. They're throwing the ball around - and holding it. They receive a penalty just as Tim Moltzen takes the field for the Tigers.

47 min: Video referee Steve Clark denies Matt Utai a try after a wonderful ball by Benji. The Tigers winger is ruled to have put his heel into touch. It came after a settling hit-up by Gareth Ellis.

45 min: Tom Humble is rumbled by Ben Pomeroy, of all people. Chris Lawrence loses the ball into touch. The match has picked up where it left off. Errors, errors and more errors. Entertaining though.

43 min: A completed set by the Sharks. Hallelujah!

42 min: Now the Tigers come up with the error. Blake Ayshford loses possession.

41 min: Sharks coach Shane Flanagan will be tearing his hair out. First set for the Sharks for the half, first mistake. They won't win the game that way.

The players are back on the field after the break. Halfback Tim Moltzen is still off the field with a finger injury. The Tigers will be hoping for a swift return.

HALFTIME: Tigers lead 12-4. There's been blood, a lot of sweat, and a few tears for Tigers debutant James Tedesco, who has suffered possible ACL damage to his left knee. It's never a good sign when a player does the damage stepping. The Tigers will be short an interchange player which will sap their reserves on a hot day. But the Sharks haven't taken advantage of their opportunities so far. It's still up for grabs.

39 min: Beau Ryan tip-toes into touch after some good attack by the Tigers. Not sure what he was doing there.

36 min: Tigers coach Tim Sheens will be relieved he selected Tom Humble on his bench. A ready-made replacement for Tedesco. Gets a solid first-up touch.

32 min: Not to be. Wade Graham's pass is ruled forward.

31 min: Sharks get piggyback penalties and are attacking the Tigers' line for the first time in a while. It will be some blow if they can take advantage.

30 min: The temperature keeps rising. Tempers have flared on the sidelines as Blake Ayshford is dumped into touch. Referee Jared Maxwell tells Ayshford to "get on with the game".

29 min: Not half an hour into his debut, James Tedesco steps off his left foot and is down. Appears to be a serious knee injury. The stretcher is on the field.

27 min: Oh dear. A forward pass from dummy half Isaac De Gois to Paul Gallen has the Sharks under the pump again.

25 min: Inside ball to James Tedesco but the fullback's offload to centre Chris Lawrence is ruled forward. The Sharks are hanging in there - but only just.

24 min: Sharks fullback Nathan Gardner loses possession. The Sharks are their own worst enemies right now. Hold the ball chaps.

21 min: TRY. The Tigers take the tap from a penalty, and Benji Marshall puts a right foot step on Paul Gallen to score. The five-eighth looks confident, as always. His conversion is successful. Tigers 12-4.

20 min: Drinks break. I need one too. It's been a busy opening. The Tigers have the ball deep in Cronulla territory.

18 min: Wonderful attacking kick by Todd Carney but the ball is spilled over the line by John Williams.

17 min: Early interchange for the Sharks. Sam Tagataese replaces Ben Ross. The interchanges will be important in this heat. The front-rowers will be blowing.

14 min: TRY. Isaac De Gois scores for the Sharks after flat ball by Jeremy Smith to Anthony Tupou. Carney misses the conversion. Tigers 6-4.

12 min: Sharks having problems under the high ball. But Tim Moltzen's ball is ruled forward after an attacking scrum.

10 min: Sharks pepper the Tigers line before second-rower Anthony Tupou loses possession. It's an open game but there will be plenty of mistakes in the heat.

8 min: Tigers centre Blake Ayshford loses the ball on the first tackle after a penalty. A frenetic start but it's beginning to settle down. A little.

6 min: Sharks get a break. Benji's bomb spilled by Matthew Wright, but the Sharkies get the feed.

4 min: Benji's boot a bit more wayward this time. He kicks out on the full, and the Sharks get their first opportunity with the football.

3 min: Marshall converts and Tigers lead 6-0. Just about the perfect start.

2 min: TRY to Tigers. Benji Marshall's well-angled grubber finds Beau Ryan, before Cronulla have even touched the ball in 2012. Tigers 4-0.

1 min: Tigers get a penalty. Early jitters soothed for them.

The players have taken the field. Todd Carney looks composed. Bryce Gibbs looks rather odd in a Cronulla jumper at Leichhardt. Can he prove a point against his old club?

Good afternoon. The weather has finally smiled on the opening round of the NRL competition, just in time for Wests Tigers v Cronulla at a heaving Leichhardt Oval. How will the Tigers fare as competition favourites? Can Cronulla tame Todd Carney? We might get a few answers today.

Two changes to the published team lists. John Williams in for Sharks winger Stewart Mills, while Jayson Bukuya, named as 18th man, will replace Mark Taufua on the Cronulla bench. The Tigers are 1-17. Fullback James Tedesco will start in his debut for the Tigers, and will no doubt be relieved that the rain looks to have disappeared for the day.
