Live: Raiders vs Storm

Date

Join Lee Gaskin as he brings you live coverage of the Raiders up against the Storm from Canberra Stadium.

The world's best fullback Billy Slater upstaged rising superstar Josh Dugan to help the Melbourne Storm clinch victory over the Canberra Raiders at Canberra Stadium tonight. Dugan appeared to almost win the game for the Raiders when he slotted a field goal in the dying minutes. But with time running out, Slater scored an amazing try when he jumped above two Raiders to steal the match.

Slater finished with two tries and was a standout in the victory. The Raiders will travel to the Gold Coast next weekend hoping to open their winning account when they take on the Titans.

80th minute: Crazy, Josh McCrone makes a one-on-one strip and gets the Raiders into attack. It was their last chance, but star fullback Dugan drops it cold. Game over, Storm win 24-19.

79th minute: Berrigan drops it with the Storm putting some defensive pressure on. The Raiders might get one more set of six if they're lucky.

78th minute: Raiders go for the short kick off and they get it back. Where's Dugan and Campese? Can they pull this off?

77th minute: Cam Smith converts and the Storm lead with three minutes left. 24-19

76th minute: Slater says anything you can do, I can do better. The world's best player takes a Cronk bomb - leaping above two Raiders - and scores what is perhaps the match winner. Unbelievable.

75th minute: Oh no, Campo drops it when he goes to kick and get the Raiders out of danger. Now the Storm is on attack. Just saw another replay of Dugan's field goal .. it was a horror, but it counts.

73rd minute: Wow! The Raiders get back to back sets in attack and Dugan gets a field goal attempt away. It's the dead-set ugliest kick you've ever seen, but it hits the cross bar and goes over. The $1.3million man delivers. Raiders 19-18.

72nd minute: We're in the last eight minutes and there's the first field goal attempt. Cronk wobbles one from about 40m out and it doesn't even get close. Expect a couple more of those in this wet and wild match.

70th minute: Campo is giving it his all out there for the Raiders in his first match as full-time captain. He just made two or three tackles in a row. But after 18-months without a full game, it's taking its toll. He looks absolutely knackered.

67th minute: Here's a good stat (well, not for the Raiders). The past 20 times the Raiders have conceded the first two tries of a match, they've lost them all. Can they change it tonight?

64th minute: The Raiders showing some real courage in defence. They repel multiple Storm attacking raids. Scores still level, going to be a good finish here.

60th minute: A journo in the office just walked to my desk and said: "have you used high-quality contest in the wet yet? Been pretty good considering the rain." You guessed it, Joel Thompson drops it five seconds later.

59th minute: Did anyone read my update from the 51st minute? Buttriss to add some spark and he delivers. Maybe I should be out at Canberra Stadium. Croker converts. Scores are level: 18-18.

57th minute: The Raiders get three sets in a row on attack, and finally Buttriss gets over the line. Dodges a couple of defenders and now we've got  contest again. Scores will be level if Croker converts.

53rd minute: Yep, just as I say that the Storm break free. Cronk puts a cross-field chip to Justin O'Neill and the Storm extends its lead. Had the Raiders really stretched out wide. Points so valuable in this weather. Smith miss conversion. It's 18-12 to the Storm.

51st minute: Travis Waddell off, Glen Buttriss on for the Raiders. Might see a bit of spark out of dummyhalf now. This is a real arm wrestle.

49th minute: Just saw some dedicated Raiders fans. There were about seven of them sitting on the fence with umbrellas. That's brave stuff, Gaskin just said the rain was now the heaviest they've seen out there.

47th minute: Shaun Berrigan hasn't had much to do tonight, but he wins a penalty there. Gee the rain is really hammering down now. Pretty good quality considering the woeful conditions. Raiders on the attack..

45th minute: The Raiders drop the ball and give it to the Storm. But wouldn't you know it, in the slippery conditions the Storm drop it as well and give it straight back. Hard work out there tonight.

43rd minute: Reece Robinson just got a touch of the ball. Tuxy reckons we can turn him into a new Raiders cult figure. Anyone else keen to start calling him "Reece Lightning"? His post-try celebration would be the full dance moves from the movie.

41st minute: We're back for the second half. Ground holding up pretty well in terrible conditions. Who's going to break the game open?

Half-time: News from Gaskin - half-time entertainment canned because of the weather. Instead they played a LFMAO video clip on big screen. If you're bored after the game, maybe you should spend some time in the Raiders Ark. No, it's not an ark in Canberra's downpour, it's a blog by comedian and one-eyed fan Tom Gibson. Here's the link: http://www.canberratimes.com.au/sport/blog/raiders-ark

Half-time: Getting some stats through from the boys. Shaun Fensom had 31 tackles and scored a try in 40 minutes. Talk about a work horse. He'll play the entire second half. Gaskin and Tuxworth have been joined by two more CT sport reporters at the ground. Someone has to do the work I guess.

Half-time: The fans are getting stuck into the referees. Campese has already been warned to keep his mouth shut. After the first 40 minutes at Canberra Stadium, it's the Storm leading 14-12. Big second half coming up.

39th minute: The boys are fired up, Campese and Slater go at each other after a dodgy hit on Josh Dugan. They're still getting stuck into each other. Remember when these two teams started a massive punch up last year? Maybe we'll see it again.

37th minute: Blake Ferguson goes over in the corner after a great pass from Josh McCrone. Referees rule the ball has gone forward. It went backwards out of McCrone's hands. Gee-wizz the Storm were lucky there.

36th minute: Just saw a good tweet wondering whether half-time entertainment will involve ark building. After the week we've had in Canberra, they might need an ark to get out of Canberra Stadium.

29th minute: It's definitely wet weather football out there. Terry Campese puts a grubber through and the ball is like a bar of soap. Somehow Josh McCrone latches on and scores the Raiders' second try. Croker converts. 14-12 Storm.

27th minute: Was that Shaun Fensom who put that bomb up? I think it was, what was a lock doing kicking the ball? It went about 20m high and 5m long. Somehow the Storm fumble it and the Raiders get the ball back.

25th minute: Back to back penalties for the Raiders in attack. But they can't take advantage, the kick goes out and the Storm settle things down again.

21st minute: Another update from Canberra Stadium. Lee said the journos are fine, it's Victor the Viking he's worried about. Someone send an umbrella down there for the big fella.

20th minute: Oh no, the Raiders give away a penalty just when the game was getting into an arm wrestle. Billy Slater was taken out when chasing a kick. They take a shot at goal from in front and Cam Smith makes no mistake. 14-6.

15th minute: Big Shillo got that offload away and Fensom twisted his way over the line at speed. That will give the boys a confidence boost. Jarrod Croker slots it from in front. 12-6 to the Storm.

14th minute: Raiders get a penalty in front of the sticks but they want the try. What can they do? Almost over, the $1.3million man Josh Dugan almost scores. Off the very next play Shaun Fensom goes over and the Raiders are back in it.

13th minute: Just got an update from the boys out at Canberra Stadium. "Wind blowing a gale towards Meninga Stand, luckily Tuxy has his Raiders beanie on to keep him warm," Lee said. Glad he's nice and warm. Raiders go on the attack here.

11th minute: Gee Blake Ferguson just got absolutely crunched. I'm in the Fyshwick office but even my bones rattled with that one. Raiders starting to get a bit of ball now.

8th minute: Wonder whether David Furner's pulling his hair out in the box. The Storm have exploded into this match and the Raiders are shellshocked. Cam Smith converted that try and it's 12-0 to the Storm.

7th minute: We're going up to the video ref to check if the Storm got this down. Yep, Cooper Cronk got there. Try time for the Storm again. This isn't looking good for the Green Machine.

5th minute: Great take from Blake Ferguson on his own line. It's going to be a tough night out there for the Raiders' big boppas with Slater sniffing around for a hole.

3rd minute: Wow! That didn't take long. Billy Slater walks through the Canberra defence. The Raiders were like turnstiles, stuck out their arms and the little ex-jockey waltzed over the line. Horror start to 2012 for the Raiders. Cam Smith converts and it's 6-0 to the Storm.

2nd minute: Big David Shillington penalised early on. Gives Melbourne a piggy back out of their half. Lets see if the Raiders can hold on.

5.29pm: Here we go, time for kick off. Predictions? I'm thinking the Raiders might get this in a tight one. Josh Dugan to score the winner on the buzzer and Raiders win by two points.

5.25pm: More technical problems out at Canberra Stadium. Chris Dutton here perched in front of a 42inch plasma bringing you the action. Feeling for Lee Gaskin and Jon Tuxworth at the ground, surely they're sopping wet by now. At least I've got a hot chocolate at my desk. Lets get ready for kick off .. five minutes away!

5.21: Anyone out there in the crowd tonight? Ponchos and umbrellas are a must .. this rain in Canberra just won't go away. At least the playing surface looks amazing.

5.17pm: ACT Sport Minister Andrew Barr said today that he was convinced Canberra needed a rectangular stadium with a roof by the end of the decade. If anyone didn't agree with him before, they certainly will now. Horrible conditions will reduce the crowd tonight. New Federal Sport Minister Kate Lundy's in the crowd for the game ... maybe Mr Barr should have a quiet word to her.

5.11pm: Raiders legend Alan Tongue presenting a jersey to Raiders debutant Shaun Berrigan in the changerooms. Footy season is officially back.

5.03pm: Not long until kick-off in the Raiders v Storm clash. Who do you think will win? Still pouring down here at Canberra Stadium. A few fans braving the rain.

Pre-game: Join Lee Gaskin as he brings you live coverage of the Raiders up against the Storm from Canberra Stadium. The Raiders triumphed in pre-season, but the Storm have some heavy artillery back in the side. Enjoy the battle of Australia's best fullbacks Billy Slater and Josh Dugan. This should be a cracker in what has become very wet green machine territory.
