    Live: Cowboys v Eels

    Date

    Phil Mitchell

Eels skipper Nathan Hindmarsh looks filthy on the world, and so he should be. You can't help but feel sorry for a bloke who plays his heart out for the Eels week in week out. As impressive as the Cowboys were in the greasy conditions, Parramatta's performance was diabolical. They missed a whopping 40 tackles and offered precious little in attack. As one of my mates so eloquently put it: they stink. Anyway, it's goodnight for me and I look forward to your company next weekend.

80 min: Cowboys rack up try No.8, this time to Gavin Cooper. Thurston adds the extras. Cowboys win 42-6.

77 min: Graham can't be denied this time as he crosses after a Segeyaro crosskick. Thurston nails the kick from the sideline. Cowboys 36-6.

75 min: Only five more minutes of misery for Eels fans.

71 min: There's nothing wrong with Linnett's catching though as he finishes off a movement on the short side to score his first try for the Cowboys, who now lead 30-4. Thurston misses the difficult kick.

66 min: Kane Linnett blows a try by not passing to his winger. Linnett's limited passing game was one of the reasons his former club the Roosters refused to match the deal the Cowboys offered him.

61 min: Video ref denies Graham his third try of the night.

55 min: Hang on, I speak too soon. Pat O'Hanlon scores for the Eels, how appropriate on St Pat's Day for a lad with perhaps the most Irish sounding name in the NRL. Burt converts. Cowboys 26-6.

54 min: Eels have just over 26 minutes to score 26 points. They've got Buckley's.

52 min: Eels cannot take a trick. Video ref denies Roberts a try after an obstruction. And it is bucketing down again.

50 min: James Segeyaro on report for a late tackle on Ben Roberts. Another Eels penalty.

49 min: Cowboys penalised for a flop. Eels have more penalties than points tonight.

44 min: Eels dodge a bullet after dropping a bomb. Cowboys penalised for being off-side.

40 min: Chris Sandow compounds the Eels' problems by kicking out on the full, but the score remains 26-0 as the half-time siren sounds. Stephen Kearney won't be a happy camper. As for the Cowboys, what a difference a fortnight makes. Two weeks ago they turned in a 'disgraceful' performance in losing to the Titans at this ground, now they could well put 50 on the hapless Eels tonight. And what a find Taumalolo is - he reminds me of a young Gorden Tallis.

36 min: Three tries in five minutes as Bowen scores off a Thurston kick. Cowboys 26-0 after Thurston's conversion.

34 min: Taumalolo breaks the line again and sends Graham in for his second try. Thurston converts. The scoreline's getting embarrassing for the Eels. Cowboys 20-0.

31 min: Cowboys 14-0. Jason Taumalolo proves too big and too strong in a 15-metre run to the line. Thurston misses the kick.

30 min: Matt Bowen is on fire this season. Fantastic 40-20.

27 min: Parra survive ... this time ... and receive their first penalty of the night a few tackles later.

26 min: Eels lose the pill AGAIN near their own line. Who'd be a coach.

23 min: Former Eel Ashley Graham carries three defenders over the line and extends the Cowboys' lead. Cowboys 10-0. Thurston misses the kick.

22 min: Eels cough up the ball on the first tackle deep inside their own half.

17 min: Johnathan Thurston adds the extras. Cowboys 6-0.

16 min: Prop Matt Scott scores after a clever dummy-half play. Cowboys 4-0.

15 min: It's pelting down in Townsville, and the Cowboys have a penalty.

11 min: Brent Tate muffs a play-the-ball. Eels back on the attack, but they turn over the ball a couple of tackles later.

9 min: Eels' Ben Roberts misses a 40-20 by a whisker.

8 min: Dallas Johnson lets them off the hook with a knock-on. Expect plenty more of that tonight on a wet pitch.

7 min: Now it's the Eels under pressure, with the Cowboys hammering their line.

5 min: Eels centre Ryan Morgan knocks on with a try beckoning. Lacklustre start from the Cowboys.

    North Queensland kick-off.

North Queensland will line up as per program, from 1-17, while Fuifui Moimoi (injury) drops off Parramatta's bench. Pat O'Hanlon takes his place.

Only 15 minutes now until kick-off. Impressive win by the Storm over the Titans in the 5.30 game. Even better still, I'm three-from-three in the tipping. The last time that happened Malcolm Naden wasn't a fugitive. Yep, it's been too long.

    • Why do they call you sonny? Are you selling out for $ and signing for the roosters next year?

      • The Eels look to be struggling without Hayne, did they remember to run out with 13 players or are they playing with 12?

        • I'm a season ticket holder at the Eels and have been since 2001. The Eels have gone backwards since Kearney took over - on and off the field. He has brought nothing to the club and some of his decisions have been strange - dropping Luke Burt for instance. If you were replacing him with someone who is a potential superstar, then I normally wouldn't have a problem with that but that wasn't the case. Also, there was always talk about Parramatta needing a genuine halfback. I always thought they needed a genuine hooker. They had two good ones in Kevin Kingston and Anthony Mitchell but for some reason they were allowed to leave whilst Matt 'Teflon' Keating, statistically the worst hooker in the NRL, is allowed to stay and keeps getting chosen in the side week after week!

          • How can the Eels management even consider extending coach Kearney's contract on the performances of the team under his guidance for last season and the start this year. They only missed the spoon by one game last season and will be lucky to win any this year going on their form after the opening three rounds. The teams lacks imagination in attack and are easy picking for any defence. They are one dimensional with three forward hit ups with no offloads then a backline RAID has the ball swinging left for a play for a tackle then back to the right, there is no changing direction of attack and it is all very pedestrian. As for defence when you have speed bumps like Ben Roberts, Matt Keating and Justin Poore in your team what can you expect. The new board were going to make radical improvements to Parra with a new outlook and they have only gone backwards in huge steps, with the exception of Nathan Hindmarsh who always gives of his best, where's the pride, the committment and passion, it's certainly not showing on the field. Why the current coach can't see what's happening on the field has me somewhat bewilded, maybe he needs a new vantage point or maybe just some imagination. Come on Eels give your long suffering fans some hope and stop blaming the loss on missing Hayne. I like many others Eels supporters are looking at a very long sad season, very long, very sad.
