Live: St George Illawarra v Sydney Roosters

Full-time report: If there has been a more thrilling match in the NRL this season I haven't seen it. Far from being ruined by wrestling tactics, as some have suggested the competition has been tainted by this year, this was a free-flowing, fast-developing contest with more twists and turns than the drive into Wollongong. In front of 40,000 fans no less. The Roosters put on their best display of the year and didn't deserve to lose but it's a memorable evening for Ben Hornby and the Dragons.

FULL-TIME: Dragons 28 Roosters 24.

80th min: Dragons try! All hell as broken loose among the Dragons faithful.  Ben Creagh has scored the matchwinner after Michael Weyman's offload near the posts, unbelievable finish. Only 50  seconds left on the clock so that's it. Ben Hornby kicks the conversion. Dragons 28 Roosters 24.

78th min: Nervous finish ahead for the Roosters. They've got to drop out the ball here with about 90 seconds on the clock. It's squeaky bum time as the Poms would say.

77th min: DRAGONS TRY. Could there be any more drama here? Nightingale has come up with a great individual effort to set up a try for Prior. And Soward has landed the conversion. Those Dragons fans streaming out of Allianz might want to turn around. Dragons 22 Roosters 24.

75th min: ROOSTERS PENALTY GOAL. Anasta puts it over to put them eight in front. Expect plenty more to be said of this incident. Dragons 16 Roosters 24.

73rd min: Pearce hits the upright with a field-goal attempt! But the Roosters have been granted a penalty and Ben Hornby is blowing up at Matt Cecchin. Soward was the culprit for mouthing of at the ref.

71st min: That's great compusure by the Count. Minichiello defuses Soward's bomb. He's surely shortening for the man of the match cheque but the Roosters aren't there just yet.

69th min: ROOSTERS TRY. Pearce is on fire, even if he doesn't mean it. Weyman, a moment after scoring, lost the ball after the kick-off and Pearce has come up with a try assist for Anasta. He looked to miss Friend's bullet-like pass but got a touch en route to the captain. The Roosters six ahead again. Dragons 16 Roosters 22.

66th min: DRAGONS TRY. Read this closely. Michael Weyman has scored from dummy-half. This is not a gee-up. The Roosters' defenders were consumed with other threats and the big, bald prop snuck over between Aubusson and Minichiello. Soward converts. Dragons 16 Roosters 18.

65th min: Minichiello, it shouldn't be forgotten, is also having a blinder here. Another super run turns back the years.

63rd min: Trysaver from one of the Roosters' more unheralded players, Brad Takairangi. Given the spelling it will take a lot for him to become a household name but he's doing his best.

61st min: We weren't joking about the crowd. There are 40,164 souls here, officials say. A great portion of them are Dragons tragics and at the moment it's not going to plan.

60th min: ROOSTERS TRY. That is superb by Pearce. Bagged left right and centre only days ago the halfback is back in a big way. That was Alfie Langer-esque, sneaking through to get the putdown from his own grubber right before the dead ball line. Anasta converts. Dragons 10 Roosters 18.

59th min: Lovely grubber from Pearce and this might be a try. Brett Morris watched it in the in-goal for an eternity and then finally had a swing at it with his hand. It's gone upstairs with Pearce claiming a try.

56th min: That's un-Dragons like. Fien throws in a chip from the tap but it comes to nothing despite Nightingale getting there first. Something out of the play book of the Wests Tigers circa 2005, not usually St George Illawarra.

55th min: Anasta not too pleased at that call from referee Ben Cummins. Ruled he stripped the ball from Jamie Soward and the Dragons are right on the attack again.

52nd min: Sorry for the break in transmission there. Internet playing up deluxe at Allianz Stadium. The good news is there has been no points, although Ben Creagh nearly grabbed a double, with Minichiello saving the day.

45th min: Michael Weyman working the sideline bike like Cadel Evans in the Pyrenees. He's been very good, considering he played only three days ago in Mudgee.

43rd min: Merrin gets to within a centimetre of the line but his held out. They let in 52 against the Cowboys in Darwin but the Roosters appear to have done plenty of work of their defence since. Not playing in 38-degree heat probably helps, too.

2nd half kick-off: The Dragons resume play and inside the first minute they have a penalty.

Half-time report: A really high quality game on a grand occasion. The Roosters have been at their most impressive all season in the first 40 minutes, and Mitchell Pearce in particular looks to have grown significantly in confidence as a result of that City performance three days ago. The Dragons, thanks to some wonderful defence, are still right on their tail, however and a gripping second half beckons. The Anzac biscuits in the media box are a nice touch, too.

HALF-TIME: Dragons 10 Roosters 12.

40th min: Ah, Friend has lost it, and Brian Smith files out of the coach's box with 30 seconds left in the half. He can't be compaining about this scoreline even if the "visitors" have had no shortage of chances.

38th min: There haven't been too many good wraps for WAG Nation, the television show Minichiello's wife Terry Biviano is featuring in, but that was high rating stuff there from the Italian stallion. The Roosters will get another late chance, too, with a mix-up ending with Josh Miller making an error on the fifth tackle on halfway.

35th min: ROOSTERS TRY. How about that, Ricky? Minichiello, the NSW incumbent you will remember, has produced a vintage moment there, leaping above Morris to take a Pearce kick right under the sticks. Brilliant. Anasta converts and Brian Smith's side are in front. Dragons 10 Roosters 12.

33rd min: This is the biggest crowd at Allianz since Foo Fighters in the off-season. A better show, so far, too.

31st min: DRAGONS TRY. That is heartbreaking for the Roosters. They really should have scored down the other end, now they're behind with Matt Cooper getting the try. Hornby kicked to the left and Vidot successfully knocked the ball back for the veteran centre. Soward misses conversion. Dragons 10 Roosters 6.

29th min: NSW coach Ricky Stuart at the ground, we're told, as part of the Fox Sports broadcast crew. He will be happy with Pearce's start but not so that injury to Scott.

28th min: Wow, some of the best tryline defence you will see. Jake Friend looked set to score twice there but was halted brilliantly, first by Rein, then a few seconds later by Trent Merrin and a couple of other colleagues.

26th min: The Roosters have really lifted in the last 15 minutes, principally Pearce. He was taken out after a grubber close to the line and they have another set of six.

25th min: Word from the dressing rooms is Scott has a dislocated elbow. That explains the pain then.

22nd min: Things getting worse for the Dragons. Beau Scott brought to the sideline in obvious pain. Now being helped up the tunnel holding his elbow.

21st min: ROOSTERS TRY. As Ben Elias once said that's a T-R-I. Prior's touch impeded Hornby's catch of that kick and Guerra pounced. Anasta converts. Dragons 6 Roosters 6.

20th min: Well, they may well have their wish. Simpkins is analysing another possible Roosters try after a messy set of proceedings there. Aidan Guerra has ended up with the crumbs after another kick to the in-goal.

19th min: Great play by the Roosters. Pearce chips into in-goal and leads chase to trap Brett Morris. You get the feeling they can't afford to let the Dragons to score again before they do. They certainly haven't had the ammunition to drag back that sort of deficit too often this year.

17th min: Oh, that's a blown opportunity. Daniel Vidot knocked on Pearce's cross-field kick and after scooping it up Mitch Aubusson looked set to put Shaun Kenny-Dowall over. Ball went to ground, though, and the officials ruled they were given the advantage.

14th min: DRAGONS TRY. Mitch Rein scoots out of dummy-half and fools a few defenders before finding Creagh on his outside. Rein would have played for Country on Sunday when Danny Buderus and Michael Ennis were ruled out injured. He was the third choice but didn't play due to a pec injury. Certainly looks untroubled so far. Soward converts. Dragons 6 Roosters 0.

10th min: Plenty of eyes on State of Origin candidates such as Mitch Pearce and Brett Morris today. Morris could nto have begun better and there is much expected of Pearce after his good display in Mudgee last Sunday.

8th min: NO TRY. Paul Simpkins finds that Morris got under Minichiello. He should have scored from there really - there was a gaping hole to run into close to the line. The Roosters could really have used getting an early jump today, as could I in respect to that aforementioned press box bet.

7th min: Ben Creagh comes up with an error on halfway and a few moments later Anthony Minichiello is over the line. Referee going upstairs to see if Brett Morris held him up.

5th min: Former Dragon Peni Tagive does well to negate St George Illawarra's first attacking raid, finished with a high kick by Ben Hornby, who has of course now become the club's most capped player today.

3rd min: A media colleague of mine is so sure of the Dragons today that he is wagering a lobster ($20) with me that they'll win by at least 20. The Herald's Glenn Jackson says he likes my chances. Early penalty for Dragons - Soward boots them to within 40 metres of the Roosters' line.

Kick-off: Braith Anasta gets things underway. This may be Roosters territory and all but it is the "home" supporters of the Dragons who are heavily outnumbering them in the stands.

Pre-game: Teams on the field for the Last Post, a moment's silence and then the national anthem.

Pre-game: The Herald's Michael Chammas has been moved to exit the press box and soak up the atmosphere outside. Not the worst idea, to be honest. The Australian Army Band and Army Cadets are on the field, as are some army trucks doing laps with a couple of ex-Roosters and Dragons servicemen. Word from stadium officials: general admission tickets are sold out.

Pre-game: Some team news while the bloke from the Whitlams is on stage. The Roosters are 1-17, but there's a couple of changes to the Dragons' line-up. Kyle Stanley is scratched, with Matt Prior named to start at centre. Nathan Fien is back to the bench as Mitch Rein comes from outside the squad to hooker. The new bench is Fien, Latimore, Merrin and Josh Miller.

Pre-game: Welcome to our live coverage of one of the NRL's great days, the annual Anzac Day match between St George Illawarra and the Sydney Roosters. There's good news and bad news. The bad first: the Black Hawk chopper meant to ferry the Anzac Cup to Allianz Stadium has been called off (the whole fleet have been grounded after an emergency landing in PNG overnight). In off the bench to begin proceedings then is a performance by Tim Freedman....The good news: at this rate there is going to be a crowd of more than 35,000 here by kick-off at 4pm. So much for rugby league being "boring".

  • I would suggest that it was free flowing game without wrestling because Melbourne and Brisbane were not involved.

    • Champion effort Dragons. Fighting spirit on display. Nightingale has the biggest heart. Glad the referee didn't spoil the match with stupid bachat penalty. Likewise, how did he miss that Wheyman was stripped by second man.

      • For 90% of the game the Roosters were the better side, if the Dragons were playing the Storm or Broncos they would have been behind by 20-30 points by three quarter time. Too many mistakes by the Roosters cost them in the end. Several times the Roosters made massive ground within a set against very ordinary Dragon's defence - so very different from the Bennett era. Didn't the Cowboys put 50 on the Roosters the game before ?
