Live: Parramatta Eels v Wests Tigers

    Date

    Michael Chammas

Full-time: Tigers 31, Parramatta 30. Parramatta scored 30 points in 13 minutes to come within a point of the Tigers, but Tim Sheens' men hold on for the victory. A remarkable finish here at Parramatta Stadium. Sheens will be furious with that finish. His players just stopped playing in the final 15 minutes. As for Parramatta, that will give them a massive confidence boost heading into next Friday's clash against the Bulldogs at ANZ Stadium. Tim Mannah, Reni Maitua and Nathan Hindmarsh addressing the playing group as we speak. Parramatta fans must be asking where has this been all year? The stage is set for a belter between the Dogs and Eels next week.

80th min: TRY Eels! Unbelievable. Cheyse Blair scores just before the siren, running 70 metres down the left edge to score. Gives Tim Moltzen an almighty fend to score in the corner. That's five tries in 13 minutes. Burt converts from the sideline and the Eels lose by a point. Benji Marshall's field goal proves the difference. Incredible finish at Parramatta Stadium.

78th min: TRY Eels. Can you believe it? Jarryd Hayne dances his way over the tryline. Parramatta coming home with a wet sail. They've gone 100 metres in that set after Ken Sio streaked away down field. Tigers 31-24 with 55 seconds on the clock.

76th min: TRY Eels. Ken Sio holds on to a cut-out pass from Casey McGuire, running in untouched. Good ball from McGuire to hand Sio his third try of the year. Luke Burt converts from the sideline. Tigers still lead 31-18.

74th min: VIDEO REF DECISION: No try for Eels. Ken Sio fails to put any downward pressure on a Matt Keating grubber. The Tigers will have a 20-metre restart. The Tigers have clocked off, but the Eels have looked good the past 10 minutes. Where has this been the previous 64 minutes.

71st min: TRY Eels. A knock on from the Tigers presented the Eels with an attacking set. An overlap presents Willie Tonga with his first four-pointer of the year. Tigers 31-12.

70th min: Roberts has done it again. A pass to nobody gives the Tigers the ball.

67th min: TRY Eels. Congratulations to Matt Ryan. First try of his career on debut. Bumps and spins away from the tackle of Chris Lawrence to slam it down. Good work in the lead up play to offload and put Jarryd Hayne away down field. Ryan's looked very strong today. Tigers 31-6.

65th min: I know I'm picking on Ben Roberts today but he's been awful. He's just put in one of the worst attacking kicks you are likely to see, straight down the throat of Tim Moltzen.

62nd min: TRY Tigers! Ben Murdoch-Masila has done it again! He's won the race to a Benji Marshall grubber to collect his second try in four minutes. Official crowd announced, 19,654. A lot of them are starting to head to the exits as the Tigers push out to a 31-0 lead.

58th min: TRY Tigers. Well that will do me. Ben Murdoch-Masila leaps above Jarryd Hayne to claim a Benji Marshall bomb, sprints 20 metres and notches up his first try of his NRL career. Hayne appeared to have lost the ball in mid-air. That sums up Parramatta's afternoon. Every time they make a mistake, the Tigers have made them pay. The Tigers now lead 25-0.

56th min: Is Fuifui kidding himself? He's come to a complete stop, got up and saw the line, then decided to put it down two seconds later. Even the Parramatta crowd can see the funny side of that. But on a serious note, that dumb play from the Kiwi prop has cost the Eels a golden opportunity with a few tackles up their sleeve.

55th min: VIDEO REF Parramatta: Checking for a double movement from Fuifui Moimoi.

54th min: The Eels fall short again. They ran the ball on the last tackle and Willie Tonga looked destined to score, but a great cover tackle around the legs from Chris Lawrence pulls the Queenslander up short of the line, before dropping the ball just centimetres from the tryline.

52nd min: Great defence from Cheyse Blair and Ben Roberts. They carry Joel Reddy across the side-line. Parramatta have the scrum feed just inside their own half. They need to score soon.

48th min: Adam Blair puts down an inside ball from Benji Marshall to let the Eels off the hook. They'll have the scrum feed 10 metres out from their own line. Blair should've done better than that. Just had a look up at the defensive line and coughed up the pill.

46th min: Tigers keep the ball alive and force a repeat set. Liam Fulton the man who poked the ball behind the line for a charging Beau Ryan. Jarryd Hayne has to tap it over the line.

45th min: Attempted 40-20 by Ben Roberts is just short. That would've been a perfect start for the Eels.

Half-time: The Tigers are getting better with every set, but the Eels were woeful in the opening half. You can't blow the type of chances they did and expect to be competitive. Hayne is struggling a little with what appears to be a niggling knee injury, while Ben Roberts looks like he could do with a week playing for Wentworthville in the NSW Cup. This could end in embarrassment for that Eels.

40th min: FIELD GOAL Tigers: Benji Marshall makes the Eels pay, kicking a field goal from 20 metres out on the stroke of half time to extend the margin beyond three converted tries. Tigers lead 19-0 at half time.

39th min: Ben Roberts is having a shocker. That is officially the biggest forward pass I've ever seen, measuring at around 8.4 metres forward. If he keeps this up he may be in for the Sandow treatment next week.

34th min: Dear oh dear. Parramatta just can't build any pressure. Another set of six attacking the Tigers line ends early in the tackle count. Cheyse Blair puts it down as the Tigers defence holds strong. I feel sorry for all you Eels fans just waiting for it to turn around. Doesn't look like happening today. Biggest cheer of the day comes after a massive hit from Fuifui Moimoi on Tuqiri. Solid collision.

30th min: Benji Marshall is down now after copping a hit to the head. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that tackle. Mitchell Allgood is being penalised. The Eels fans aren't impressed, and rightly so. Tigers will take the two points just wide of the right up-right. Should be 18-0 soon.

29min: Robbie Farah down. Swinging arm from Casey McGuire collects the Tigers hooker on the chin. He's on report for the second time in the match. Farah gets to his feet now. The Tigers use up a free interchange but it doesn't look to be too bad. Farah should be back. Nothing really in that tackle, McGuire has nothing to worry about.

26th min: TRY Tigers. Liam Fulton finishes off some good attacking football from the Tigers. He left Roberts for dead, stepping past the Eels five-eighth with ease to take the Tigers out to 16-0 lead. This could turn ugly for Parramatta with 13 minutes remaining until half time.

25 min: Hayne sends a scare through the Eels bench again. His knee twisted awkwardly in a tackle by Lote Tuqiri. He gets to his feet slowly and he's given the thumbs up by trainer Craig Catterick.

20min: TRY Beau Ryan! The Tigers go 90 metres to score. Ryan grubbers behind the line and beats Jarryd Hayne to the football to slam it down in the corner. Great work by Ryan. Not so good for the Eels in front of a sold-out crowd. Marshall misses his attempt at goal, Tigers lead 10-0.

18th min: VIDEO REF: No try for Parramatta. That's inexcusable by Ben Roberts. He did well to break the line and all he had to do was draw the fullback and Hayne would've strolled under the post untouched. Unfortunately for Eels fans, he dropped the ball with no one around him. Horror start by Roberts.

16th min: You just can't afford to do that at this level. Ben Roberts drops the ball cold to let the Tigers off the hook. They are coach-killers.

15th min: Moltzen mistake on his own line. Eels with a full set of six attacking the Tigers line.

11th min: TRY Tigers. Chris Lawrence strolls over for the first points of the match. Soft defence from Parramatta, they let Farah run across field and a simple inside pass provided Lawrence with a clear path to the tryline. Not good signs for the Eels in their first set defending their own line. Benji Marshall converts, Tigers lead 6-0. Moltzen makes his way back on to the field.

7th min: Tigers use their free interchange after McGuire was placed on report. Tim Moltzen comes from the field for Blake Ayshford. Joel Reddy moves to fullback against his former club.

6th min: Hayne looks to have recovered, good news for Parramatta fans. Not so good news for Tigers fans. Tim Moltzen is down and out after copping an elbow to the head from Casey McGuire trying to contest a Jarryd Hayne bomb. McGuire on report as Moltzen receives treatment by the Tigers trainers. He's up now, albeit gingerley.

2nd min: Oh no. Jarryd Hayne is down. He eventually gets to his feet but he doesn't look comfortable. Hopefully he was just feeling the brunt of a heavy collision. Parramatta squander first attacking chance of the match but all eyes on Hayne at the moment as he takes his place at the back of the defensive line.

Preamble: After some showers in the afternoon, the sun is shining at Parramatta Stadium for the clash of the cellar dwellers. The Wests Tigers are 1-17, while Parramatta have made a couple of changes. Casey McGuire will wear jersey No.14 as he takes over Chris Sandow's halfback duties, while debutant Matt Ryan comes into the starting side, moving Mitchell Allgood back to the bench. Who is this Matt Ryan? Big call by Stephen Kearney to shuffle him into the run-on side. Taniela Lasalo comes on to the bench in jersey No.19. Looking forward to the battle between Benji and Hayne. They seem to get the best out of each other. Who will ever forget that night at the SFS back in 2009.

Join the chook cook, Michael Chammas, as two struggling western Sydney clubs fight to stay in touch with the eight.

    • Hmmm, maybe Sandow isn't the problem.

          • It's not the coach missing tackles and dropping balls

        • If ever you wondered what the problem with the Tigers is, the way they gave away a game earlier this year and almost gave it away this time. It's the sign of a team that's not enjoying their footy when they stop playing when they think they've done the job. The teams that are enjoying it keep going for it no matter what state of the game.

          • it was a shameful finish for the tigers after such a good start. If I was sheensy I'd be spitting chips and making changes.Tuqiri is always out of position on the left wing and Moltzen can't tackle. The tigers won't win the comp with those two and the atrocious "who cares' attitude they showed in the last 15 mins - woeful! Bring Ayshford in instead of Lote and get a lower grade fullback who can tackle and hold onto the ball.
