Live: Sydney Roosters v Newcastle Knights

Chris Barrett

FULL-TIME REPORT: That's it from me this afternoon. Have to race off and hit the sheds. The Roosters were thoroughly dominant and after threatening to waste their hold on the game with missed opportunities they put their foot on the gas in the second half. Mitchell Pearce, Jake Friend and Anthony Minichiello in particular were outstanding in the second 40. This time next Sunday Pearce will be named the NSW halfback for State of Origin I.

FULL-TIME: Roosters 24 Knights 6.

80th min: Fantastic finish to the match, with the Roosters throwing it around and big Martin Kennedy (who is rumoured to own a pet snake) nearly getting over the line.

79th min: Akuila Uate sprints clear but his inside ball to Mullen is ruled forward. No consolation try for Knights fans as they contemplate the F3.

78th min: Minichiello has had a real spring in his step in the second half. The Roosters, of course, gave him a new one-year deal last week. They would have been mad not to, to be fair. Just as I write that the veteran No.1 makes another break.

75th min: No Buderus, no Gidley...the Knights could unravel here. In good news for them, though, Pearce is off the field for an early mark and gets a big ovation.

72nd min: ROOSTERS TRY. There will be no coming back from this. That is wonderful dummy-half play by Friend, who noticed a tired and sluggish Kade Snowden and sent a delightful ball that Pearce steamed onto to score untouched. Anasta converts. Roosters 24 Knights 6.

70th min: Willie Watch: Mason now back on the bench and that'll be it for him this afternoon. Had some good moments out there without setting the world on fire but it was only his second game back.

68th min: Only 12,728 on hand at Allianz Stadium for this contest but the Roosters faithful will be happy to get the two points (that is, of course, if there is no repeat of Anzac Day).

65th min: Everything coming easy for the Roosters now. Anasta converts from the right sideline. Roosters 18 Knights 6.

63rd min: ROOSTERS TRY. Sam Perrett is over the line in the right corner after some of the best, or at least most prolific, hot potato play you will see. Great pass by the newly re-signed Anthony Minichiello to put Perrett in the clear.

61st min: Apologies for the score feed above being frozen. Our tech types at Fairfax headquarters are working on it. The score is: Roosters 12 Knights 6.

59th min: ROOSTERS TRY. That's better from the hosts. Lovely ball by Pearce to put Aubusson in a hole and he's come up with a big left-handed palm on Zeb Taia to stroll over for a try. Peni Tagive deserves credit, too, for a break he made a few plays earlier. Anasta misses the conversion. Roosters 12 Knights 6.

57th min: Ordinarily this would be the sort of match you would think Darius Boyd could put his stamp on. He just hasn't settled at Newcastle yet, however, and today has been no different.

55th min: That sums it up really. Mullen kicks to the left corner and McManus does his best Warwick Capper impression but leaves the ground about five minutes early. The ball rolls into touch.

54th min: The Knights feed a scrum 10 metres out from the Roosters' line. Here's their chance.

52nd min: What you can say about this game is that it's tough (There have been some bone-rattling hits). It is also tough to see either side bothering the competition heavies at present.

51st min: Willie Watch: Mason involved in a huge contact with Boyd Coydner and the young Rooster, the tackler, got the better of it. More scrappy play there by the Roosters - Cordner throws a forward pass to blow another shot at the line after a Newcastle drop-out.

48th min: Friend placed on report for hit on Alex McKinnon, whcih left him groggy. Newcastle's red heads at the centre of everything.

47th min: There's not much complexity to either side's attack here. It's contributing to a real stop-start game and some of the last-tackle options have been very ordinary indeed. This is a 1980s scoreline and if they keep going in this fashion it may stay that way.

44th min: Heading over to UNSW to see The Darkness after the game tonight. Incredibly Steve Mascord, a doyen of both rugby league and glam rock, is not going. (Mail is he is seeing them in Canberra instead). Meanwhile, a penalty puts the Knights back in rare territory: the Roosters' side of the field.

42nd min: Perplexing finish to an enterprising first set of the half by the Roosters. They charged down 60 metres from the kick return but Pearce's mid-field bomb was messed up with Kenny-Dowall and Perrett getting in each other's way.

2nd half kick-off: Naiqama starts play and that's a more regulation kick-off, unlike the Roosters' effort in the first 40.

HALF-TIME REPORT: The Roosters have had that much ball, and that many opportunities, they should be ahead by 20. As it is the gap is two and Brian Smith was giving the walkie-talkie a good workout deep in that first half as they blew all that possession and field position. Newcastle, to their credit, were steadfast on their own line. Look for Pearce and Mullen to stand up and take hold of this game for their respective teams.

HALF-TIME: Roosters 8 Knights 6.

40th min: Anasta lands the kick as the siren goes. Roosters 8 Knights 6.

39th min: That looked nasty. Edwards, one of the Knights' two blood nuts, has lifted Pearce there in the tackle and is on report. Greg McCallum and co will be having a very close look at that tomorrow morning. Anasta lining up a penalty goal to put them in front with 20 seconds left in the half.

36th min: Anasta levels with the conversion. Roosters 6 Knights 6.

35th min: ROOSTERS TRY.  Pearce hits back with a grubber and Tinirau Arona sprints under the posts and beats Boyd to the ball.

31st min: KNIGHTS TRY. They've hardly been in the contest but Newcastle have taken the lead. Mullen beats Pearce with a dummy and dashes over. Some conjecture about what looked like a knock-on by Joel Edwards a few plays earlier but he got away with it. Wes Naiqama converts the try. Roosters 0 Knights 6.

28th min: NO TRY. And it's a Newcastle penalty, with Kenny-Dowall ruled to have taken out McManus in the leap for Pearce's kick.

28th min: Finally, the Roosters are over the line. It's been sent to the video ref but Kenny-Dowall may have scored a try there. Meanwhile, Mason is on to about half a dozen boos. No one has really noticed.

27th min: Amazingly it's still 0-0 here even though it's been all one-way traffic. Willie Watch: The big man striding out on the sideline. Could be on soon.

25th min: If you look at the possession chart higher up this page you'll see how little ball the Knights have had. But they're still hanging on somehow. The Roosters lacking finishing polish.

23rd min: Oh, the Footy Show boys will have a field day with this. Friend has produced one of the great "Falcons" from a Mullen kick there. As they might say it's deadset just about blown his head off. He is OK, though, and the Roosters are once again approaching the Knights' danger zone.

22st min: Anasta's knock on brings that attacking foray unstuck. Profligacy is the key word here for the Roosters.

20th min: That bloke with the whistle in the crowd not getting a look in as officials Shayne Hayne and Gavin Morris blow up a mountain of penalties. Roosters pressing the Knights line again, with Jake Friend centimentres away.

18th min: Matt Hilder, as we expected, now playing dummy-half after coming off the Knights bench. Costigan back to the back row.

17th min: The Knights dig deep again with some resolute defence. Shaun Kenny-Dowall seemed to have an unmarked Anasta to pass to but went himself and it's a turnover close to the away line.

15th min: You've heard of the Phantom Siren, now there seems to be someone over in the eastern stand with a whistle. Was unable to fool the players or refs a couple of minutes ago - we'll see how he goes with security.

13th min: Gee Darius Boyd looked away there. He was put away by Tyrone Roberts but his pass to send McManus over the line went forward some way. Costigan, meanwhile, smashed by Waerea-Hargreaves.

10th min: Two straight penalties for Newcastle and suddenly they get a shot at the Roosters line. But Kade Snowden coughs it up cold. Willie Watch: Mason warming up on sideline. Interesting to see the reception he gets when Bennett puts him on.

9th min: Ah, it comes to nothing. Mitch Aubusson puts down a Pearce pass and Newcastle are off the hook.

7th min: The Roosters picking up where they left off last start, before that late capitulation to the Dragons that is. They're about to get a third straight set with Pearce's kick trapping James McManus in the in-goal area.

5th min: Couple of interesting battles here today apart from the perennial Bennett v Smith one. This is perhaps Jarrod Mullen's last chance to launch a State of Origin bid and he's up against likely NSW half Mitchell Pearce. Then there is Willie Mason against his old club, the Roosters. Smith's side on top early, forcing a Knights drop-out.

3rd min: The Knights survived that early raid but an enterprising beginning from the hosts. In others news no sign of any Pussycat Dolls in the crowd as yet.

Kick-off: Braith Anasta gets play underway for the Roosters and what a start! A short kick-of and BJ Leilua has the ball.

Changes: Just one adjustment to the Roosters' line-up - Boyd Coydner coming onto the bench for Jack Bosden. For the Knights Danny Buderus is, of course, out with that achilles injury and Neville Costigan is the surprise starter at hooker. Evarn Tuimavave is also missing with a corked thigh so there are two additions to the Newcastle starting pack: Adam Cuthbertson at lock and Richie Fa'aoso in the front row.

Pre-game: Thanks for joining us at Allianz Stadium for this round-nine clash between Brian Smith's Sydney Roosters and Wayne Bennett's Newcastle Knights. Thanks also for the dubious "click magnet" nickname handed to me on the homepage by our online sports editor. It could be worse, I guess. Anyway, it's a superb autumn day in Sydney and we've got two teams in action today who have been in mixed form to date this season. The Roosters, at least, looked impressive despite a heartbreaking defeat to the Dragons here 11 days ago and are deservedly the favourites.
