That's the third win of the year for the Gold Coast and after a slow start, they dominated much of the second half to earn their stripes against the Bulldogs at Suncorp Stadium.
It truly was Sezer's Palace towards the final stages. Aidan Sezer, the Gold Coast's impressive five-eighth, again showed great poise under pressure. He stepped up to hit a 40m penalty with seven minutes to play then banged over a field goal to make sure of it with one minute left.
It was 6-4 to the Bulldogs at the break but the Titans replied with four tries in 16 minutes to earn a big lead in the second half. Ben Barba did his best to keep the Dogs in the hunt but he was a lone hand in attack.
No collapse this time The Titans managed to brilliantly salvage a heart-melting defeat from the grasps of victory last week against the Tigers. When Josh Morris scored with 11 minutes to play, reducing the gap to six, it felt like deja vu all over again. But Sezer confidently struck a long penalty, then a field goal, to show he's a star in the making.
Cold shoulder Sam Kasiano can expect to be in trouble for his shoulder charge to the head of Luke O'Dwyer five minutes after halftime. O'Dwyer was falling but the Dogs backrower sized him up and didn't hold back, rocking the head of the Titans utility and sending him crashing to the deck. It didn't look good. He was put on report and expect weeks to be dished out.
Origin influence The usual suspects performed for the Titans. Greg Bird worked himself to the bone in the backrow, as did Ash Harrison. Expect them to face off in game one, along with another Titan, Nate Myles. If guys like Josh Reynolds were hoping to turn selection rumours into fact, they needed to do a bit better than they did tonight. The Bulldogs were flat all over the park and did little to enhance the prospects of Michael Ennis, Josh Morris and Reynolds.
FULLTIME Titans 25 Bulldogs 14.
79th min Sezer field goal. Just to rub it in.
78th min Penalty to the Titans right in front. The Bulldogs player was offside after the bomb was dropped and Sezer is going to slot this through to make it 24-14. That's going to be it and the Titans get the upset here tonight. Well played to them - been a long road this season. Doggies fans, your lads never really turned up tonight. Fell asleep to let in three tries in 10 minutes to blow them out of the contest.
76th min The Dogs a long way from home and need to score twice. Not looking likely at the moment as the Titans find a fifth wind in defence and swarm the ball runners. It's Gold Coast ball now. Surely they can see this one out with four minutes on the clock. They lead 22-14.
73rd min A flop from the Bulldogs and the Titans have a penalty. Sezer from 40m out.... and he nails it! Pressure kick and this kid really can play when it counts. That changes things dramatically and the Titans have an eight-point lead. It's Titans 22 Bulldogs 14.
71st min Kick is wide and it's 20-14 to the Titans with less than 10 minutes remaining. The Gold Coast would be having nightmares of last week at this stage. Having seen the meltdown against the Tigers, the Bulldogs will be confident they can at least get this to golden point.
69th min TRY for the Dogs! Morris streaks away and reaches out and we have a game on our hands now. It's 20-14 to the Titans but the Bulldogs have a kick on the way.
67th min Harrison had a rest but is back to give some stability to the Titans. He's done a mountain of work so far. Gordon almost went over! Knocked it on as he slid for the ball in the corner. So close and that might have been the winner. As it is, the Dogs are still right in this one and trail 20-10.
61st min Goodwin can't land the sideline conversion and the 10-point deficit remains in tact. Barba away again! He's killing them. Zillman wrangles him this time but the Dogs are right on the pace.
58th min I wouldn't say this game is being played at a breakneck pace but that suits the Titans just fine. They need to remember how to close out a game. Oh jeez... that's not going to help. Ben Barba scores a TRY for the Dogs to get his second as they go coast-to-coast. It's 20-10 in favour of the Titans.
56th min TRY to the Titans. Mark Minichiello chases hard off the Prince kick and they are in control at the moment. Kick on the way and it misses for Prince. It's 20-6 to the Titans. Bet of the round if you are that way inclined. A flood of late money for the Coast this afternoon apparently.
55th min Prince kicks it again (see Corey Parker.... you kick it between the tall ones) and it's 16-6 to the Gold Coast. The one and only Steve Mascord, who is sitting next to me and writes for everyone from the SMH to Bacon Busters, is wondering if the Bulldogs one-game winning streak has come to an end. And this is going to be another try! Waiting...
53rd min Idris! He goes over after he picks up a loose ball and Idris just rams his way over. That's going to be a try for sure. Here's the call... TRY it is and the Titans lead 14-6 with a kick to come.
51st min Stagg getting helped off by the trainers - ankle it seems. In some trouble and I doubt we'll see anymore of him tonight. The Titans having the better of the going at the moment and get another penalty.
50th min We've gone upstairs again although surely the Titans haven't scored here. Champion put in the grubber and gee that's close. Barba fell asleep over the ball and wished it dead and Mead almost snuck one there as he scooped it back. No try though but just centimetres in the final call. Titans lead 10-6 as David Stagg goes down in back play.
47th min Prince gets the kick and the Gold Coast are up 10-6.
45th min Ref's call and it's a TRY! Srama just gets the point of the ball on the line from a dummy-half lunge and his side goes ahead 8-6.
45th min Sam Kasiano in a bit of strife. Dropped a huge shoulder right into the head of Luke O'Dwyer and goes on report. That's some weeks coming up there as Srama claims a try for the Titans. We're heading upstairs.
43rd min You'd call this game a 'grind' at this point. That's generally code for 'dull' although coaches seem to love it. I'm hoping one or both of these teams gives up tackling in the second half. Ben Barba has looked likely for the Bulldogs. Harrison ballplaying a lot for the Titans as well. Some speculation in the press box that he may not get picked for Queensland but he's a certaintly. It's 6-4 to the Dogs.
41st min They're back. Are we there yet?
HALFTIME The kick is missed and the Bulldogs lead 6-4 at halftime.
39th min They've made a liar of me! The devils! Prince runs approximately one metre to score after Luke O'Dwyer pops it up from almost on the deck. Let's make that a TRY for the Titans. They trail 4-0 with a kick on the way.
37th min Mead drops it after a richochet from the Sezer kick. Might have been half a chance to get to the line on that occasion from 10m out. Had some room and he's quick Now Canterbury waste possession in midfield. This is a bit like covering the Melbourne Cup then the next race is a maiden at Grafton. Dogs lead 6-0.
34th min The Titans need to kick it faster. It's charged down by the Bulldogs as Sezer is slow to clear. That cost them the game last week. This time it cannons into touch and the Titans feed the scrum. For a side that is so desperate for a win, it hasn't been showing on the park in terms of intensity. They trail 6-0.
31st min Srama knocks it on as he passes from dummy half. Very GC. Dogs 6 Titans 0.
30th min Bad mistake from Barba and Srama picks it up just a few metres out from the Doggies line with a full set up their sleeve. And now a penalty arrives. Titans need to make this count.
27th min Idris up walking so that's good news. He's heading back to the line so it looks as if he's going to play on. Well done son. And because the Titans haven't lost a big player, I think it's time for me to reveal that I believe the Gold Coast have the worst jersey in the entire NRL. Light blue fades into dark blue with bits and pieces all over the place. Less is more, people. Less is more. Dogs lead 6-0.
26th min A handy penalty for the Titans and they muck up another chance! Idris down on the deck as well and he looks to be in a world of hurt. Dogs lead 6-0 and right knee dramas for Jamal.
25th min Bryson Goodwin adds the conversion to the tally and the Bulldogs lead 6-0.
23rd min Funny old game, "insert sport here". In this case, it's rugby league. A minute after the Titans were denied, Ben Barba has gone under the posts at the other end. That's a TRY folks. The Dogs lead 4-0.
22nd min The crowd of almost 42,000 just chatting politely among themselves. The Titans are looking a little bit more interested and here we go, they think they've got a try on their hands! Mead knocked it forward from Aidan Sezer's kick for mine. Doubt they will get this call. Survey says... no try. The score remains 0-0. Is anyone still out there?
19th min Mead takes the bomb then takes a bump. Hangs onto it though and the slog continues up and down the park without a great deal of fanfare. The ground has taken a bit of a pounding and there are some patches of grass looking thin. That's right - I'm writing about the state of the grass. Can someone please do something interesting? It's 0-0.
16th min The Titans having a shot here but the high ball from Prince goes to ground and the Bulldogs survive. This one struggling to get out of first gear, if in fact anyone has bothered to kick it into life. It's 0-0.
9th min Scott Prince back this week for the Titans, with poor Jordan Rankin gone from the squad. He had a shocking end to the match against the Tigers last week and you would have liked to seen him back on the horse. But the veteran Prince is back and they probably beat the Tigers last week if he plays. Scrappy start to this game - going to be hard to top the opener in every respect.
5th min No score here as Barba climbs high. He is officially the forgotton man in Origin selection after Gillett all but sealed his place in the previous game. An early penalty to the Dogs, Luke Bailey questions the ruling but incredibly is told to move away. It's 0-0.
1st min No time to waste. We're away for the second game as the Titans try desperately to get their season back on track.
