Live: Penrith Panthers v St George Illawarra Dragons

    Date

Live: 1 min 30 secs until this page automatically reloads.

    James Polson

That's it from us tonight. A great win from the Panthers. Apologies for the technical hitches this evening and we'll be back in a few days to kick off round 11. Thanks again for your company.

84 min: FIELD GOAL to Penrith.  Lachlan Coote wins the match for the hosts after another Hornby attempt falls well short.

Into golden point time now but not before both sides mess up chances at a matchwinner. The gremlins are back. Mitch Rein gave away a penalty late in regulation time with the Panthers trapped in goal, the Dragons then inexplicably spread the ball wide on what turned out to be their final set while Ben Hornby was screaming for the ball in field-goal range.  Blake Austin then missed one himself for Penrith.

Kyle Stanley adds the extras and we're all locked up.  12 apiece with four minutes to play.

74 min: TRY.  Mitch Rein atones for some early errors with a try.  We could be heading for golden point here, and the only people unhappy about it are the Herald's sports department.  No respect for deadlines.  Panthers 12-10, with a kick to come.

73 min: Kyle Stanley tackled just short of the Panthers' line, and Penrith are penalised for stripping the ball.  Dragons with another repeatset just 10m out.

71 min: The Dragons once again pressuring the Panthers line but the hosts hold firm.

70 min: Travis Burns attempts the field goal but it's just wide.  It won't be the last attempt.

69 min: Dragons look dangerous once again but it's come to nothing.

67 min: PENALTY.  The Dragons get their 10th of the match and a chance to go on the attack immediately.

66 min: Kyle Stanley converts, Panthers lead 12-6 with just under a quarter of an hour to play at Centrebet Stadium.

65 min: TRY.  The Dragons are finally on the board, and we've got a match on our hands here.  Ben Hornby gets a nifty offload away to Jake Marketo who bags his first try for 2012.  Panthers still ahead 12-4, kick to come for the Dragons.

64 min: Jason Nightingale kicks early in the count and it's deflected off a Panther into touch.  Dragons with an attacking scrum.

Michael Weyman is iced up on the sidelines and won't be back tonight, off for scans tomorrow.  Big loss for the Dragons if it's serious.

62 min: Another repeat set for the Dragons, surely they can do something this time.  The pendulum has just begun to swing their way but points are the only language the sporting gods speak.

60 min: Mitch Rein knocks on after Trent Merrin forces the offload.  It's fast becoming one of those nights for the Dragons as the Panthers pack down for another scrum.

Brett Morris kicks on the last and it's taken into touch by the Sheikh.  Repeat set for the Dragons now and finally a chance to impress themselves on the match.

59 min: Dragons finally starting to put something together in attack, third tackle 10 out from the Penrith line

57 min: Matt Robinson makes a good bust for the Panthers and looks like scoring before being brought down on the last just metres out from the Dragons' line.

56 min: Dragons kick goes in touch in goal and the Panthers get us moving again from their own 20m line

No try, and on repeat viewing it's a fair call.  Still, once again the Panthers have got over the line.

54 min: TRY to the Panthers, and it comes from yet another Dragons error.  Geoff Daniela gets onto a Travis Burns kick but we're looking at a potential knock-on.

52 min: Yet another error from the Dragons, who can't seem to take a trick tonight.  Penrith have the scrum feed right on the half-way line.

50 min: PENALTY to the Dragons.  Looked like Daniel Vidot may have been taken in touch in goal there but instead his side gets the penalty and with it a chance to go on the attack, 40m out from the Panthers' line on the second tackle.

49 min: Big Mick Weyman looks to be in all sorts of trouble after attempting a tackle on Josh Mansour, whose brother Sheikh is no doubt still celebrating Manchester City's win this morning.  Looks like a knee or ankle and he's now heading from the field.

47 min: The Dragons have committed the cardinal sin of letting the kick bounce but fortunately for them it's not converted into points.  St George Illawarra get us under way from the 20m line again.

45 min: PENALTY to the Dragons.  The kick for touch has barely gone 20 metres.

44 min: Brad Tighe spills it out wide just as the Panthers were starting to look dangerous, an early letoff for the Dragons.

44 min: Panthers will have another crack after Brett Morris is caught in goal.

Not a good start for the Dragons, another simple error and Penrith are on the attack early.

Here's Michael Chammas's take on the first half:
Ivan Cleary needs to show his team a replay of that half during the week to remind them of the type of intensity they need to play with each week. They've rattled the Dragons early, but St George Illawarra have looked out of sorts in the first 40 minutes. Their goal-line defence has been soft, but they look disorganised in attack without Jamie Soward. It's hard to see where their points are going to come from. Penrith aren't over the line just yet, they started strong against Melbourne last week before capitulating in the second half.

CHANGE for the Dragons: Jeremy Latimore on for Dean Young.

41 min: Back underway for the second half as the Dragons take it up.

Energy, power and pace are the key for the Dragons, Price says, while his Penrith counterpart Ivan Cleary has told his troops simply 'do it, don't doubt it.'

The Panthers, in addition to scoring two tries, have had at least as many disallowed.  Hard to believe this is the side that went two and a half matches without scoring recently, while the Dragons will no doubt be harangued by coach Steve Price for conceding a few silly penalties that gave the hosts plenty of opportunities.

There's the whistle and we'll be back in a few minutes with all the second half action and the half-time assessment from Herald Sport's answer to Colonel Sanders, Michael Chammas.  Back shortly.

39 min: Brad Tighe spills it as the Panthers spread wide and that will just about do us for the first half.

38 min: Nathan Fien takes the Panthers' kick dead and it's yet another set for the hosts as the break looms large

37 min: Daniel Vidot taken in goal and Penrith will get another set.

No they're not.  Another mistake sees Penrith back in possession before the Dragons give away yet another penalty, and with it a golden opportunity to boost themselves to what could be a match-winning lead before the break.

Scratch that.  Young resumes normal service and his Dragons are on the attack again.

35 min: Dean Young looks to be in some injury strife now after copping a big hit from Burns, who has been everywhere in this first half.

34 min: Brett Morris fields the high ball brilliantly under more pressure than Julia Gillard.  Sensational stuff.

Matt Cooper cops a big hit and spills it backwards, before Nathan Fien spills it twice, just to be sure.  A real waste from the Dragons, a try before half-time would, to state the obvious, bring them right back into this match.

32 min: PENALTY to the Dragons, again on the first tackle.

31 min: Lachlan Coote has made a dead-set mess of taking a Dragons' high ball, and looks to have hurt himself in the progress.  It hasn't hurt the scoreboard however, though it will be a line dropout for the Dragons to get another crack.

29 min: Ben Hornby's kick leaves a bit to be desired and the Panthers are in possession once more.

Mitch Rein held up, we'll start again on the fourth tackle.

28 min: Dragons get a repeat set and are metres out.

27 min: PENALTY - it's the Dragons' turn this time as the Panthers are pinged for a dangerous tackle.  Good chance to hit back for the red V.

27 min:  Travis Burns makes half a break before offloading to Lachlan Coote who spills it, but Burns has been cleaned up after the play.  He's still on the turf.  No penalty but a scrum feed to the Dragons.

    Kick successful.  Panthers lead 12-0.

22 min: TRY.  And it does hurt them, immediately. Kevin Kingston scoots out from dummy-half 10m out and scores under the sticks.  Nifty work.  Penrith 10-0, kick to come.

20 min: PENALTY to the Panthers.  Offside.  Panthers will restart 40m out from the Dragons' line.  A little bit of ill discipline is starting to hurt Steve Price's men.

Blake Austin adds the extras and Penrith extend their lead to six.

And it is.  Panthers lead 4-0 with a kick to come.

18 min: TRY to the Panthers.  Or is it? We're going upstairs to look at a potential obstruction.  Ryan Simpkins crashes over but there might be more to this one.  Dean Young looks like he was going the wrong way so this should be four points to the hosts.

17 min: Penrith pressuring the Dragons' in-goal again, Travis Burns's kick appears to have been knocked on by  Daniel Vidot but luckily it's gone into the corner post.  Another repeat set for the Panthers now.

15 min:  Letoff for the Dragons there as Penrith go on the attack again.

In case you missed it in the last hour, Mal Meninga has announced his Queensland side for next week's Origin opener. Cherry-Evans, if he gets on the field, is one of two debutants along with Matt Gillett.  Imposing looking squad.

Billy Slater, Darius Boyd, Greg Inglis, Justin Hodges, Brent Tait, Jonathan Thurston, Cooper Cronk, Matt Scott, Cameron Smith (capt), Petero Civoniceva, Sam Thaiday, Nate Myles, Ashley Harrison. Interchange: Matt Gillett, Dave Taylor, Ben Hannant, David Shillington
    18th man: Daly Cherry-Evans.
    Shadow: Dane Nielsen

14 min: PENALTY to Penrith.  Nathan Fien penalised for the Dragons.

13 min: The Dragons spill it just 10m out from the Panthers line, Ben Hornby attempting to get his mittens to a wayward pass.  Score remains 0-0.

We're under way at Centrebet Stadium and it's been a tight opening 10 minutes.  Still scoreless between the Panthers and the Dragons, which is fortunate as we've had some technical gremlins in the system here in Heraldland. Apologies and hopefully we've seen the end of them for this evening.

Join the Twitter outlaw, James Polson, as the Panthers host the Dragons.

Will the home side miss Michael Jennings more than the Dragons miss Matt Prior?
