James Horwill just said it wasn't pretty but the Reds snap their three-game losing streak with a 20-13 win over the Brumbies. They needed that one badly and will be elated to go into they week off with a victory under their belt.
The Reds took a 14-0 lead at halftime but had to withstand a stubborn resurgence from the Brumbies in the second half, particularly with Liam Gill given a yellow card and the visitors putting on 10 points in his absence.
That's the first time the Reds have beaten the Brumbies at Suncorp Stadium and a pair of first-half tries to Scott Higginbotham set up the match nicely. The critics had been coming thick and fast for Queensland but they showed a lot of heart tonight.
The Brumbies can only blame themselves for that loss. They were full of mistakes tonight - turning the ball over a whopping 26 times - although some of that came from good pressure on the deck from Gill and Beau Robinson.
There was even a fight between Ben Daley and Dan Palmer to keep the crowd involved. Daley gets a split decision despite taking a good shot to the body to kick things off.
Key man With debutant Sam Lane in the number 10, Will Genia took it upon himself to step up his game tonight. Carried the attack on his shoulders and made great strategic decisions when his side needed them. Gill played on the edge of the rules all night but was a bit much for the Brumbies at the breakdown.
Numbers game You don't win games of rugby with 26 turnovers. But worryingly for the Reds, they missed 27 tackles to 10 from the Brumbies. Fell off contact all over the place in the second half, particularly when Tomane scored to put the Brumbies back in contention.
What it all means The Reds said they wanted to show some backbone and silence their critics. I'd say they achieved one-and-a-half of those goals. The Brumbies need to work harder at the breakdown and cut the errors. They're still a good side.
FULLTIME Reds 20 Brumbies 13.
79th min Lane is good with the penalty and the Reds are going to get this one you'd think as the siren sounds. It's 20-13 and that's the game.
79th min Penalty to the Reds. This might well be curtains for the Brumbies. Sam Lane will kick for goal from 10m inside the touchline.
77th min Great stuff from Shipperley again and the Brumbies on the backfoot. But Lane chips over the top for some reason and the Brumbies survive thanks to a diving grab from Lealiifano. Frisby gets it back for the Reds and they are rising to the occasion! Desperate to hang onto this 17-13 lead as they drive towards the Brumbies line.
75th min The Reds battling to cover in the middle but they hold Hooper up and force the scrum! That's clutch defence from the home side and Genia will feed a crucial scrum 10m on the Reds side of halfway. This will get punted right away and they'll chase for their life. Reds lead 17-13.
72nd min Gill owes his side something good here. H's back as the Brumbies win a line-out in the Reds half. They knock it on though and that's costly. Need to treasure the ball more than that and they rushed that out of the back of the ruck. Let off for Queensland.
70th min Gill almost back on now and the Brumbies have put on 10 points in his absence. It's about to be 15 on 15 again and the Reds need to get some quality possession and gain some momentum. All Brumbies at the moment but the Reds grafting away through the forwards. They lead 17-13.
67th min Tough call on the Brumbies there. Lealiifano done for a forward pass but it was one of those short, off the hip balls and they are let go nine out of 10 times. It matters not and that's a TRY for the Brumbies! Tomane brushes off James Hanson and Sam Lane to gallop over. Awful, awful defence and no excuse at all for that. Simple misses and the Brumbies are loving this. Lealiifano gets truly and the Brumbies are back. It's 17-13. The Reds wanted to show their character - they have that chance now.
65th min White is on fire and the Reds are falling off tackles all over the place now. Out on their feet with the man down. Crisis averted for the moment but they will pack the attacking scrum right on the Reds 22m line. Moore off for Hagerty. The Wallaby hooker having the ribs iced up. Reds cling to a 17-6 lead.
64th min Great chase from Frisby and Mogg ends up throwing the forward pass as he tries to evade the tacklers. Efforts like that change games. Now the Reds have the scrum 10m out from the Brumbies line and they win a very messy one. Here they go but it's lost and Nic White sends it into touch.
60th min Crowd is 31,479 tonight. Great result for the QRU but not for Liam Gill. He gets the YELLOW CARD and Lealiifano will kick this penalty. It's 17-6 to the Reds but they are down to 14 men and there's no Gill or Robinson at the breakdown. Hooper will love this. Gill was sent for kicking the ball away from the breakdown. Crazy stuff.
59th min Scott Fardy on for the Brumbies as they nearly go in! Try saver from Shipperley on Speight! Great run from McCabe and he sets up his winger but Shipperley steams across and smashes him into touch. Good patch of play now for the Brumbies now though and they're not out of this game by any means. Realy danger time for the Reds and McKenzie thinks so as well. Ed Quirk comes on for Robinson, who's been very strong tonight. Reds lead 17-3.
57th min The Reds have thrown Frisby into the game now as the Brumbies skate clear! Nic White has them at sixes and sevens but Hooper drops it in support! Absolute butchery of a try. That's their 20th turnover, which is about the same number as the Reds had against the Force. Makes it hard to win games of rugby with those sort of numbers. Greg Holmes on for Daley for the Reds, who lead 17-3.
55th min Walsh wants the Reds tacklers to roll away a lot quicker and they concede a penalty right in front. Walsh warns them and I suspect a card will be next. Hooper into the action now as Lealiifano dinks it over. It's 17-3 to the Reds.
54th min Tomane slices through! The Reds cover but they have them on the backfoot. Turned over and wasted again from the Brumbies. Lane had to cover the Tomane run there and it was a key tackle. Good stuff from the former league man there. Brumbies still on the attack now. Need points badly.
53rd min Lealiifano lining up a penalty now. No panic here it seems from the Brumbies and they think there is enough time to get home here. But he pushes it wide and there's no change to the score. The Reds lead 17-0 as Hooper warms up on the sideline in the 19 jumper. Higginbotham is about to come back on for Samo.
51st min Lane kicks it and the Reds lead 17-0. That little body shot from Palmer costs his side three points. But it did provide plenty of entertainment. Let's hope nobody gets suspended that that. Handbags at 10 paces. Knowing SANZAR they'll get six weeks.
50th min Palmer and Daley going at it! Exchanging punches! Great stuff. Palmer will get pinged here for throwing one to the body. Great stuff there from Steve Walsh. No cards, a quick chat and let's get on with things. Lane kicking for goal now. Brilliant!
48th min Another mistake by the Brumbies, this time by Lealiifano. At least he's trying something for his side. The Brumbies have looked fairly bland tonight and are content to play it right up the pipe on most occasions. Now a penalty to the Reds and they are starting to build right into this one. They lead 14-0.
45th min The Reds kicking it back to the Brumbies all night so far. Want them to play some rugby and force the mistake. Great run from Lealiifano as he shrugs off Toua and scampers down the right side of the park. But he's being let down by his support and the Reds continue to have a field day at the breakdown. Queensland lead 14-0.
44th min Mogg LOVES the torp.
42nd min Not the ideal start there from Mogg. Kicks it out on the full but had taken it back into his 22 before unleashing. Crowd try to the Reds as Slipper makes the greatest run of his life, mostly because the Brumbies defenders heard the whistle. They get the scrum feed and clear it properly this time.
41st min Change for the Reds at halftime with Higginbotham putting the cue in the rack after his pair of tries and Radike Samo at the back of the scrum. Higginbotham in the blood bin we've just found out. No changes for the Brumbies - thought Hooper may get the nod but he's still on ice. Reds take a 14-0 lead into this half.
HALFTIME Reds 14 Brumbies 0. Ben Tapuai lost it as it was sent wide by Genia but the Reds are in control here at Suncorp. A pair of tries to Scott Higginbotham the difference so far. We'll be back after the break.
40th min They push over but it's held up. Good defence from the Brumbies but they'll set this scrum just 5m out from the ACT line. Guts needed here from the Brumbies.
39th min Penalty to the Reds but it's wide out. Hands in the ruck and Horwill wants the line-out. Another try before the break would be tough for the Brumbies. The Reds in the zone at the moment. They want to extend that 14-0 lead.
37th min Mogg tries to run it back but goes wide and passes it to nobody. Goes into touch. Brumbies aren't particularly happy with that effort and now they're under more pressure. Shipperley chasing hard on the kick and a rushed clearance from Mogg, who opts to the torpedo. Reds find themselves with a decent opportunity now before the halftime break.
35th min Some justice there for the Reds. Nic White got away with the most blatant knock-on you'll ever see as Walsh looks the wrong way. But they spot a forward pass as the Brumbies shift it wide. The Reds hang on but the Brumbies starting to build some pressure, if only they could cut down the error rate. They trail 14-0.
30th min Morahan makes the mistake after starting the movement for the try. Drops the kick and the Brumbies get a chance off the attacking scrum. They're on top in that department and the set piece looks rock solid. But it's turned over once again and the Reds getting good numbers to the breakdown. They will feed the scrum on their 15m line. Gill a menace at the breakdown. Must see Hooper in the second half. Reds lead 14-0.
27th min Kimlin chugs it up for the Brumbies but it comes to nothing. Morahan clears for the Reds and gets it back as they start to find some form. And over they go! TRY. Higginbotham again! Gets the double and Sam Lane, take a bow. Chips for himself, beat Kimlin and got the boot to it again. Davies recovers, gets hauled in but Higginbotham lurks on the inside and away they go. Its 14-0 as Lane knocks over the extras.
25th min Incredibly, Lane kicks one from right on the sideline. Couldn't hit a barn door with a watermelon with his first two but gets the toughest one. No pressure I guess. The Reds lead 7-0.
24th min TRY to the Reds! Higginbotham over in the corner after a long deliberation from the TMO. Queensland lead 5-0.
20th min Another good chance now for the Brumbies, presuming they can win the line-out. They manage it this time and some quality ball here could spell trouble for the Reds. They're just 15m out but give away the penalty. Lane will clear this but fails to find touch. The rookie is having a tough start to the night.
18th min Ooops. Lane back inside to Davies but that's a shepherd. And Lane was hammered for his trouble. The Brumbies defence can afford to rush up on the Reds because they are really struggling for anything resembling creative playmaking. Good touchfinder from Morahan there though and Moore throws it in 30m out from the Brumbies line. It's 0-0 as the Reds pinch another one.
16th min Lost by the Brumbies and the pressure released on the Reds. Typical derby so far - plenty of feeling and a tight arm wrestle. Reds look a bit more composed than previous weeks. We'll see how long that lasts. It's 0-0 at Suncorp.
14th min The slowest scrum in history has finally packed. A few players finished off their doctoral thesis while they waited. Brumbies get the win and they will see their front row of Palmer and Alexander and Moore as a big ace tonight against Hanson, Daley and Slipper. Still 0-0 as the Brumbies move it towards the Reds 22m line. Pretty willing contact on the deck tonight.
12th min Attacking line-out here from the Brumbies and a big chance for them now. Moore throws it in 20m out from the Reds line but they can't hang onto it and the Reds pilfer.
10th min Lane is going to try to kick this one from 30m out and three metres inside the right touchline. Tough start for his first kick in Super Rugby. Hooks it badly though and it's still 0-0. No Mike Harris for the Reds. No Ben Lucas either. Might see some quick taps tonight from Queensland as the Brumbies restart from their 22.
8th min Great attack by the Brumbies but Kimlin passes it straight to the Reds and they go on the counter. Beau Robinson lumbered after the box kick from Genia and they are in a great spot to attack. The backline just isn't clicking though. Repeat efforts here and Steve Walsh goes back for a penalty.
6th min Good quick ball from the Reds but Higginbotham drops it cold with open pastures in front of him. Nice quick hands from James Hanson and that should have been much more than it was. Coach killer from the Reds number eight but that's about where they're at currently. Confidence is low and the touch has deserted them. Still 0-0.
4th min Great first touch for the Brumbies and they almost score! Mogg bolts away and chips the fullback. Hits the afterburners and goes past Lane like he was going the wrong way up an escalator but the ball just beats him over the deadball line. Hard luck there but promising play.
3rd min Repeat phases for the Reds to start this one but great defence from the Brumbies. Sending bodies hurtling into the breakdown and there's no momentum for Queensland at the moment as they kick it away. Advantage Brumbies.
1st min Reds kick off and we're away. Pretty good crowd here for Good Friday and the Reds need all the help they can get at the moment. Huge pressure on young Sam Lane and I'd assume the Brumbies are going to get right in his face tonight.
7.34pm Nearly ready for a start here in Brisbane. A real sense of occasion tonight for the Reds. They certainly have to dig themselves out of the ditch they've found themselves after a loss to the Sharks followed by beltingsby the Bulls and Force. Got to love what the Brumbies are doing this season. They are on top of the Australian conference and have a great record here. They hold a four-nil record here as well, with the only time the Reds have won in Brisbane aver the ACT was in 1999 at Ballymore. The Brumbies yet to win away from home this season, though. Beau Robinson and Liam Gill will both start for the Reds, meaning they intend to hammer the breakdown. Look for Michael Hooper to come on sooner rather than later if the balance shifts in favour of the home side.
7.23pm Good evening folks. Welcome on board for what should be a pretty decent match here in Brisbane between the Brumbies, who are playing some good rugby at the moment, and the Reds, who would like to be playing some good rugby at the moment. The Reds have another number 10 tonight in Sam Lane, who is so new he doesn't even warrant a photo in the program. He's the fifth choice flyhalf for the Reds, if not the sixth. Big test for the home side against a team they traditionally struggle against. Happy Good Friday and thanks for following our coverage.
