Lane, Tapuai hurt as Reds fall to Stormers

The Stormers have shown their class to claim a 23-13 win over the Queensland Reds here in Brisbane. Queensland lost five-eighth Sam Lane (ACL - gone for season) in the opening minutes and Ben Tapuai (collarbone) soon after which didn't make their task any easier against an excellent side.

The Reds fell behind 17-3 at halftime and looked at sixes and sevens. Ben Lucas played 78 minutes after starting on the bench but couldn't help the Queensland backline find anything resembling coherency.

Poor defence - Radike Samo letting Peter Grant waltz over in the first half was the most glaring example - killed the Reds but that's not to say they didn't have opportunity enough. They did and James Horwill, who scored their only try, felt they didn't have the confidence to take their chances.

"We felt we created enough opportunities to win that game. A lot of it was our own mistakes and not backing ourselves to get over the line," he told Fox Sports.

Key man Vice-captain Grant was sensational for the visitors. He conducted play with authority, scored a try, threw a try assist, kicked three from three and saved a try when he belted Mike Harris into touch. All sorts of winning from the veteran.

Numbers game The Reds kicked too much in the first half, with little impact. The Stormers kicked 22 times and the Reds 21 but the South Africans kicked for 735m to 519m for the Reds. Luke Morahan's repeated bombs from fullback were predictable and easily defused.

What it means The Stormers meet the Western Force on the way home next week and look the side to beat at the moment. The Reds head across the ditch to meet the Blues and desperately need to find some cohesion in their backline. Key injuries once again resulted in disjointed play, which fell apart at key moments in attack. They do get Digby Ioane back next week and he will replace Tapuai at 13. Quade Cooper is a few weeks away and can't get back fast enough. Lucas will be better for the run.

FULLTIME Stormers 23 Reds 13.

78th min Going to be all over. Rob Simmons penalised for a high shot. Weak sort of tackle but high all the same. Grant will eat this for breakfast and a Stormers side missing some very big names is going to come away with a gutsy win tonight. They'll go to the top of the table. Grant gets it and it's 23-13.

76th min Reds get another penalty and Harris will take this one. Harris will try to poke this through from 25m out and 15m in from touch. Should get it... and he does. Stormers lead 20-13 and the Reds need a converted try from their bag of tricks.

75th min Great scrum from the Reds. They spin it and get the feed. Will get one of their own 10m out and they need to score in a hurry now. They trail by 10 points and this is the crucial play surely.

73rd min Interesting one here. Reds penalty with seven minutes to play and they back themselves. Harris walked over as if he would take the shot but he kicks it into touch. Good positive play from the Reds. Guts or glory. They need to make this count now as they throw to the line-out and Humphries grabs it. But it's not straight! James Hanson hang your head young fella. Stormers loved that. They lead 20-10.

71st min Great attack by the Reds but Grant bodyslams him as he breaks free on the sideline! Textbook up and under and he drives him into touch. What a play. Reds much better in this half but every spark has been cruelly extinguished by a very handy Stormers outfight. They lead it 20-10 as the Reds get a penalty 60m from home.

68th min Some good defence at last from the Reds. Oozed character there as an exhausted Horwill trudges off to be replaced by Van Humphries and his beard. Genia knocks on now and the Stormers right back in the ascendancy now. You'd think any score here might just ice this one as we near the final 10 minutes. Stormers lead 20-10. For those just tuning in, the Reds lost Sam Lane to an ACL in the opening minutes and Ben Tapuai has broken his collarbone.

65th min Reds give away a penalty in attack. Greg Holmes guilty at the breakdown and that was a great chance lost from the Queenslanders. Stormers are just so hard to crack and just need to consolidate here to regain control of this game. Little bit of crowd support for the Reds has lifted them at this stage. Stormers lead 20-10 and on the move now.

64th min Another penalty to the Reds. Too far for Harris, although that's not particulary difficult. Very accurate, not so good on the distance. Reds killing the line-out tonight and the swing it wide. Davies getting involved here. Good chance.

63rd min Lucas? Crazy Lucas. Just runs through the motions and kicks it right to the Stormers. Ordinarily, that's fine but in this case, it only went three metres. The Reds get a break though and win a penalty. Need to get out of their half and keep piling on this pressure to be any hope. Stormers lead 20-10.

61st min Harris kicks the goal (he's baaaaack) and the Reds aren't done for just yet. They trail 20-10 with plenty of time left. How much have they got left in the tank though?

60th min Higginbotham off and Gill into the action for Queensland. Double openside attack and Robinson will go to number six. Nick Koster on for the Stormers Etzebeth off. Now here 's a TRY for the Reds! It's the skipper Horwill. Has tried his guts out tonight and gets the reward. It's 20-8. Easiest try he will ever get - grabs it off the line-out throw by the Stormers and dives over.

58th min Close for the Reds! Pick and drive leads to a grubber for Lucas and Morahan and Shipperley trip over each other as they case. Ball sat there for an eternity and somehow nobody could get to it. Morahan has injured his knee but is back in the line. No choice really, no more reserves. Spoon of cement administered and the Stormers continue to lead 20-3.

54th min The Reds get a great chance but get counter rucked all the way to the Caxton as they attack just a few metres out. Now they finally win the scrum feed right back on the 40m line. In attack, the Reds have got almost nothing tonight. The backline is a shade of its full-strength version. They need someone to pluck something out of thin air to get them moving on the scoreboard. And time for Liam Gill surely. Need some pressure on the ball at the contest to make things happen. Stormers lead 20-3.

52nd min Look away now, Reds fans. A penalty right in front for the Stormers. Higginbotham strolling back onside with hands on head and Duvenage passed it right into him. No choice for Walsh, lazy stuff from the number six and Grant makes it count. It's 20-3 to the Stormers.

48th min Something is happening. The Stormers eventually work out a way to win that particular set piece and we're trading kicks. That early flurry from the Reds yielded exactly zero points and you wonder if they shot all their bullets in those opening exchanges of the second half. Expect the Stormers to play field position from here. They lead 17-3.

47th min Scrum lessons from Steve Walsh. Riveting stuff this. I'll let you know if something happens.

46th min Big shove from the Reds and the Stormers still under pressure right on their line. Stormers clear it into touch but the Reds get the line-out in good position, right on the Stormers' 22. Desperately need to get some points out of this..  but they knock on. Goodness.

45th min Steve Walsh has an excited little skip and he goes upstairs. Rob Simmons has gone over next to the posts.... but he's lost it. No try. Stormers hang on. It's 17-3. Reds just cannot buy one tonight.

43rd min Stormers get it but knock it on but the Reds feed the scrum - no, they've had a rethink - the Stormers feed the scrum. Well there you go. But the Reds get it agains tth feed! And the penalty! Inspired stuff here to start the half. Quick tap!

41st min The Reds desperately need a break or something to get them into gear tonight. That won't do it. The pass from Harris goes begging and it's a bit schoolboy. Nothing resembling the defending champs at all. At least Harris is out there. Wonder if he'll have a shot at goal at any stage. Stormers lead 17-3 as Davies gets clear! Dragged down though. Big go here for Queensland.

HALFTIME A bit of push-and-shove at the death but that's about the best shot the Reds have thrown. The Stormers in complete command with a 17-3 lead. The Reds have Sam Lane (ACL - season) and Ben Tapuai gone for the night and have missed 10 tackles to the Stormers' two. Queensland looked like they were getting back into the game but Ben Lucas missed and Grant scored just a minute later.

39th min A bomb-a-thon from Morahan. Hasn't run it once tonight. Very predictable stuff. Now Harris down for the Reds, can you believe. Blood I think. Schatz is on for the final minute. Samo to the centres. Oh goodie. Stormers romping in 17-3 at the moment. Look superb.

36th min TRY to the Stormers. Peter Grant makes the second effort and dives over. Miserable attempt from Samo to let that one in. Waltzed through about five players but the big number eight was the worst offender. Time to bring on Schatz. That's benchable. Grant converts his own try and the visitors lead 17-3. Big, big trouble now for the depleted Red ones.

35th min Lucas lines up another shot - an easier shot - but misses. Not sure what's going on with Harris. He's clearly the best kicker in the side but must feel a real lack of confidence. Now the Stormers are right on the attack! Reds falling off tackles!

33rd min Davies is being a pest down the left wing and almost wins the turnover there with a spirited chase. He looked ok but the Reds cavalry offended at the breakdown as they piled on and the Stormers get the penalty. Too far out for Grant but they start to string phase together from 50m out. Stormers lead 10-3.

29th min Penalty for the Reds from 45m out. Ben Lucas is going to take this one. Mike Harris maybe can't make the distance. But Lucas can. Kicks it and the Stormers lead 10-3. Bad news from the rooms though - Lane has done the ACL and Tapuai has broken his collar bone. Both injuries confirmed.

25th min Morahan looks completely sapped of confidence at the back for the Reds. No real idea what he wants to do when he gets it and ends up putting up a series of ineffective bombs. No pace as he brings it back either. Now it's Horwill v Aplon in a race for the line! Comedic stuff - it looked like a dad running after a naughty toddler. Aplon wins, the Reds get it back and give away a penalty for obstruction. It's amazing they are only losing 10-0 really.

23rd min Bad mix-up between Morahan and Frisby. Morahan eventually gets it but hits it out on the full and it goes back for a 22m line-out. Ouch! Elstadt down but not out. Very strange play - Beau Robinson kicked it, for a start, but it went right into the head of the Stormers flanker. He looked like he was being swooped by a magpie as he tumbled to the turf. Reds feed the 22m scrum. Stormers lead 10-0.

20th min Butchered by the Reds! Beau Robinson had Rod Davies free on the wing after the turnover but held up the pass too long. Davies ran past it and it dropped to the ground. He would have scored for certain if he'd grabbed that one. More disjointed play from the Reds in the backline. Been the case all season. Stormers still lead this one 10-0. With players down, the Reds can't afford to let those sort of chances go begging. The Cape Town side knows how to defend.

18th min The Reds have conceded 21 tries this season. Certainly their backline defence doesn't look anywhere near as staunch without Anthony Faingaa and Digby Ioane there. Ioane due back from suspension next week. Good kick there from Genia but he needs to lift tonight. He's had his pocket picked twice at the ruck tonight with slow passes. Immense pressure on his pass. Stormers lead 10-0.

15th min Ridiculous play from Samo. Took out De Jongh well after he passed the ball. Lucky not to get a yellow there. And a left clavicle break for Tapuai so he's been added to a very long Reds injury list. Now the Reds give away a penalty! It's alllllll going so horribly, horribly wrong. Stormers lead 10-0 and are down two players for the rest of the night in Lane and Tapuai.

14th min Harris was on target but it fell short. Well short, in fact. Maybe the hamstring isn't quite up to scratch just yet. They could have done with that contribution but the Reds back on the attack now.

12th min The Stormers make a rare mistake and their point-a-minute quest is in tatters now. They lead 10-0 and the Reds get a penalty almost 40m out and right on the sideline. Mike Harris is going to have a shot here - he's playing his first game for a month. Earlier this season, he kicked a record 4567 consecutive goals. Can he regain that form?

9th min Plenty of woes here for the Reds. Grant kicks it and the Stormers lead 10-0. And Ben Tapuai trudges off the field with some sort of injury, or possibly a hangover for getting demolished in that tackle. Nick Frisby on and no more backs left on the Reds bench - and we're not even up to 10 minutes. No news let on Lane but it really looked to be an awful injury.

7th min Super counter attack from the Stormers. Got to the breakdown and kicked it away and De Jongh smashed Tapuai to win it back down the park. Now a TRY to the Stormers! So, so easy in the end. It's Gio Aplon and it's 8-0. That defence was not up to standard by any means. Little man on big man and he leaves them for dead out wide.

6th min Lucas gets involved with plenty of touches but the Stormers hold on and force the turnover. Not a great kick though and the Reds get another crack from 30m out. Queensland full of energy at the moment.

4th min The number 10 curse! Lane has done the knee it seems and can't get up as play continues around him and almost over the top of him. Steve Walsh finally stops play and the replay looks FRIGHTENING. Knee turned inside out. He's already had a knee reconstruction and that's the end of his night and possibly his season. He's carried off and Ben Lucas - another 10 who has been out for a month with an injury - is out there. Harris stays at 12.

3rd min Now the Stormers mess up the catch from the restart and the Reds get an attacking scrum. Right back at ya. Queensland wins it and young Sam Lane has a dash at the Stormers line.

2nd min Well, that wasn't very clever from James Horwill was it (James, if you read this later, that was for pure dramatic impact). He's given away the penalty and Peter Grant lines up the shot from 30m out and on the angle. Gets it too. Stormers lead 3-0. Cop that.

7.35pm Thanks for joining the coverage tonight in what should be a very interesting one in Brisbane. The Reds are fresh from the bye, have some troops back in the squad and I get the feeling they are set for a good showing tonight. Of course, the Stormers are in great nick in 2012. They are second on the table and full of quality. Lovely night here for rugby and a big crowd rolling into this great old ground. Can't wait - Reds by a couple for me.
