Live rugby: Hurricanes v Brumbies

Date

Daniel Briggs

Thanks for joining us for our live blog. It looked like the game might be slipping away from the men from the ACT in the second half when they fell behind 25-16. But no one told them. The Brumbies laid on three unanswered tries from that point to secure another bonus-point win. You have to love how they are going about things. They can throw the ball about, play tough and play smart. Jake White has instilled an enormous spirit in his side and it's a pleasure to see them fight for every play. Now a first Super Rugby finals appearance since 2004 is so close they can taste it. A win at home next weekend against the Reds will confirm it in front of what should be a massive crowd at Canberra Stadium. Michael Hooper was again outstanding for the Brumbies tonight, while Zack Holmes was outstanding filling in for the injured Christian Lealiifano in the No.10 jumper.

Full-time: Game over! Just outstanding from the Brumbies. They haven't won in Wellington since 2003 but put those demons to rest tonight. Brumbies 37 - Hurricanes 25.

75th min: The Canes have been camped down near the Brumbies' line for the last few minutes. Tense stuff here.

70th min: TRY! Zack Attack! The Brumbies are coming home like stallions here! Zack Holmes cuts through to score under the posts. And he converts his own try. Give him a Wallabies jersey too. Give them all Wallabies jerseys! That's the fourth try and a bonus point as well by the way. Brumbies 37 - Hurricanes 25.

67th min: It's started to hail now! Chris Dutton reckons this will be one of the Brumbies' gutsiest ever wins if they can hold on.

63rd min: TRY! The Brumbies somehow get the ball back from the scrum and soon after Michael Hooper barges over. If this bloke doesn't get a Wallabies jersey I'm not here! Holmes converts and all of a sudden the score is Brumbies 30 - Hurricanes 25.

61st min: Pass the ball you blokes! The Brumbies applied a mountain of pressure on the Canes' line but too many one-out nothing plays instead of giving the ball to the backs results in the inevitable turnover.

53rd min: TRY! Lock it in! Scott Fardy cuts through some feeble defence before finding a looming Sam Carter to score arguably the greatest try in rugby union forward history (possibly). Holmes converts and we have a ball game again. Hurricanes 25 - Brumbies 23.

51st min: TRY! Jeffery Toomaga-Allen barges over from close range. Hurricanes 25 - Brumbies 16.

49th min: Michael Hooper gives away a penalty for a lifting tackle on Victor Vito. Not much in it but definitely a penalty. Beauden Barrett hooks it wide from 45m out right in front, so no damage done on the scoreboard.

48th min: The Hurricanes concede a penalty in nearly the exact same spot. Holmes nails it this time to cut the margin to four. Hurricanes 20 - Brumbies 16.

46th min: Reggie Goodes is penalised for coming in from the side. Holmes sprays the penalty badly. The rain is coming down heavily now. Hurricanes 20 - Brumbies 13.

43rd min: TRY! Shocking start to the second half for the Brumbies. They knock-on the kick-off and a couple of minutes later Perenara bamboozles their defence with a 25m dash to cross near the posts. Taylor misses an easy attempt. Could that come back to haunt the hosts? Hurricanes 20 - Brumbies 13.

Second-half: We're under way in the final 40 minutes.

The Brumbies are in a huddle out in the middle of the field before the second half kicks off. This is a huge 40 minutes for them.

'Blocka' Dutton is also a fan of the Arctic-like press box conditions. "I don't drink coffee but I've just gone to get a cup of boiling water to keep my hands warm,'' he says. "And I thought Canberra was cold!"

Some cracking half-time entertainment at Westpac. There's an AFL-style competition and our man at the ground Chris Dutton reckons 'there's a good reason why Kiwis don't play AFL'.

Half-time: That's all for the first 40 minutes. It's a very even contest at Westpac Stadium. The home side did well to reel in an early 10-0 deficit but after threatening to get on top of the Brumbies, ACT steadied the ship before the break. A massive 40 minutes are coming up in the second half. The game's right up for grabs and if the Brumbies can snatch it they will give their finals hopes a massive boost.

40th min: I hope no one's eating dinner. Matt Prior's head looks like something out of an Alfred Hitchcock movie. There's blood every coming from a deep cut under the left eye. Hopefully no one's eating dinner while reading this as well just quietly! Even the ref has been turned off his dinner, telling Prior: "You've got to go off, you look like you've been in a war."

39th min: The Brumbies looked dangerous close to the Canes' tryline after stringing together numerous phases but ultimately turn the ball over.

34th min: The Brumbies are getting sloppy. Stephen Moore turns the ball over for a poor lineout throw and the Canes get a hand down field from a penalty.

30th min: The Brumbies spill the ensuing lineout and from the scrum a beautiful set play from the home side sends Victor Vito in under the posts. Lovely stuff from Wellington but that's two soft tries that Jake White will be letting ACT hear about at the half-time break. Taylor converts and the Canes lead for the first time tonight. Hurricanes 15 - Brumbies 13.

28th min: Jason Eaton is bundled into touch in the process of trying to score a try in the left corner. Bit of justice for the Brumbies because a pass in the play directly before Eaton's effort went about a metre forward. The ref's eyes must be painted on!

27th min: The Brumbies are flirting with danger, they've let a couple of the Canes' midfield bombs bounce.

26th min: Big Auelua is down injured for the Brumbies. It looked like a nasty head clash with Zack Holmes. He looks pretty dazed but is going to continue. Go you big thing!

24th min: Ian Prior is having trouble clearing the ball down field for the Brumbies, that's two in a row that have been charged down by the Canes. It's tough being the size of a garden gnome!

23rd min: But the Hurricanes get a penalty of their own from similar range. Taylor sneaks it inside the right upright. Excitement plus at Westpac Stadium! Brumbies 13 - Hurricanes 8.

21st min: The Brumbies have another penalty, this time from 30m out and 15m in from the left touchline. Holmes drills it over and it's Brumbies 13 - Hurricanes 5.

18th min: Jesse Mogg lines up an audacious penalty attempt from 55m out and it comes back off the uprights. Brumbies 10 - Hurricanes 5.

16th min: TRY! Hurricanes half TJ Perenara picks up the ball from the back of the ruck and darts over. It was all too easy then for the No.9. Andre Taylor sprays the conversion from out wide. Brumbies 10 - Hurricanes 5.

14th min: Jesse Mogg denies a certain Hurricanes try, getting his hand on a ball to their unmarked winger. The home side will have a lineout from 5m out though.

9th min: We're going to the TMO for a possible try to big Fotu Auelua for the Brumbies. TRY TIME! Holmes converts and the men from Canberra have got off to a flyer here. The big man dived all of 12cm from the back of the ruck to go over. It's Brumbies 10 - Hurricanes 0.

7th min: Joseph Tomane cuts the Hurricanes to shreds from deep inside his own half after the Brumbies steal the ball at the breakdown. They're now deep on the attack!

5th min: Yes! Great stuff from the referee breaks up nine Brumbies phases in a row with the Hurricanes shot to pieces to gift the Brumbies three points from a penalty right in front. Zack Holmes converts and it's Brumbies 3 - Hurricanes 0.

2nd min: Nic White has come on to replace Ian Prior, who picked up a head cut trying to bring down Taylor. After three goes, the Brumbies finally come away with the scrum win.

1st min: Hurricanes fullback Andre Taylor cuts the Brumbies open from a kick return, but knocks the ball on 10m before halfway.

Kick-off: We're under way here at Westpac Stadium.

The heavens have opened in Wellington and it's cold enough to freeze the you-know-what off a brass bull. The boys from the ACT should feel right at home tonight!

Preamble: The ACT Brumbies are exciting their fans with running rugby, but this afternoon they head across the ditch for one of the toughest road tests in the game - against the Hurricanes in the cauldron.
