Live rugby: Brumbies v Reds

Nathan Gilson

Full-time: Thanks for joining us for our live blog. That result gives the Reds a chance of overhauling the Brumbies in the race for what looks like the only Australian Conference finals spot. But the one point loss means the Brumbies keep a five point lead over the Reds.

A tough contest, dominated by the forwards and in the end it came down to a brilliant piece of work from Luke Morahan in the third minute. Pity the rest of the match didn't live up to his fine effort.

In what could be a big blow for the Wallabies in June, Reds captain James Horwill went off in the second half with what looked to be a hamstring strain. Reds 13-12

80th min: Holmes shaves the post! Only a few centimetres in it surely as the Brumbies go down 13-12 in a brutal game. Not much running rugby but an absorbing contest.

79th min: The Brumbies are picking and driving and win a penalty 40 metres out. Holmes is lining it up for the win!

77th min: The Brumbies are camped on their line, a second scrum just five metres within a minute. But the ball comes out the side of the scrum and Nic White gives the Brumbies 70 metes with a massive kick. All set for a huge finish.

74th min: Mogg puts it out on the full to give the Reds possession just 25 out from the Brumbies line a costly mistake.

72nd min: Reds get within 10 metres of the Brumbies line but drop the ball. It's as close as anyone's been to the tryline in the second half.

68th min: The Brumbies built more than 10 phases in the Reds half, but Michael Hooper gets caught alone with the ball and gets pinged for holding on. A real chance for the Brumbies wasted.

65th min: No such troubles for the Brumbies lineout that time as Nic White kicks out of trouble and the Reds give away a silly penalty as Queanbeyan product Saia Faingaa has a word to the ref.

60th min: Little bit of comedy in the lineout from the Brumbies. Scott Fardy failed to hear his captain Ben Mowen's call and the two players turned straight into each other. Both players are now bleeding from the resulting head clash.

58th min: Jesse Mogg is producing some absolutely massive kicks from his own half. His boot is keeping the Reds pinned down and producing some excellent field position.

56th min: Clanger! Reds winger Digby Ioane drops a kick from Nic White on the halfway line to give the Brumbies some good field position.

54th min: Holmes pots a penalty from 40 metres and it's back to one point again. I get the feeling something's gotta give in the next 10 minutes. Reds 13-12

51th min: Harris kicks another penalty, he's not too bad of the tee this fella. He's kicked something like his last 15 straight. Reds 13-9

48th min: Horwill has ice on his hamstring, so not a knee injury after all. Still, he could be in doubt for the Wallabies Tests in June.

46th min: The Brumbies are building some good pressure early in the second half. Zack Holmes gets another penalty chance and slots it. Reds 10-9 but the Brumbies look good after half-time.

43rd min: Wallabies and Reds captain James Horwill is in trouble. He's limping from the ground after what looked like a nasty knee injury. He looks devastated.

Half-time: A pretty dour first half after an opening with plenty of feeling. A real arm wrestle so far. A bit of push and shove and then a moment of magic from Reds fullback Luke Morahan. getting the ball just outside his 22 he burst through the brumbies line and then chipped and chased from 40 metres out. Reminiscent of Jesse Mogg earlier in the season. More of that please... Hopefully from the blokes in white.

39th min: Reds goalkicker Mike Harris ends the half with a penalty. Reds 10-6

36th min: Zack Holmes kicks another penalty after the Reds infringe in the breakdown. The Brumbies would be pretty happy with the scoreline. Reds 7-6

31th min: Fans of forcings back are having an absolute ball at Canberra Stadium tonight. It's a kickathon!

30th min: For the first time the Brumbies get through some phases but get beaten out at the breakdown on the Reds 22. Better signs though after forgetting what the ball looked like in the first 15 minutes.

28th min: Zack Holmes gets the Brumbies on the board with a penalty goal. Reds 7-3

26th min: Take a bow Quade Cooper, 25 metres from his own line he's put it out on the full... just 30 metres out from his own line. If ever there was a hot and cold footballer, it's QC.

25th min: It's been penalty after penalty in the opening exchanges. Something both coaches will be none too pleased with. 11 penalties between both sides so far.

11th min: Brumbies finally get their hands on the ball and get two penalties on the trot to get themselves out of their own end. Nic White puts the ball into orbit from the free kick and the Brumbies get their first chance to attack.

9th min: Reds winger Dom Shipperley knocks the ball on over the line in a huge let off for the Brumbies. But the ball comes back for an earlier penalty.

8th min: Brumbies win a lineout against the throw but then lose the ball forward in the first phase. They just can't get their hands on the ball at the moment.

5th min: Quick throw from a lineout and the Reds go on the attack. It's looking ominous for the Brumbies. Phew! a penalty against the Reds on the Brumbies 22 relieves the pressure.

4th min: Mike Harris adds the extras from right in front. Reds 7-0

3rd min: Luke Morahan scores an unbelievable try with a huge chip and chase after making a bust in his own half. It goes upstairs but there's no doubt. Reds 5-0

1st min: Brumbies winger Henry Speight goes up for a high ball and gets cleaned up. A bit of feeling shows early after members of each team get into a little bit of argy-bargy.

Preamble: The Reds are still trying to find their form of last season, but the new-look Brumbies are looking to ensure themselves a finals spot for the first time in seven seasons. In Australian rugby terms, this is as big as it gets.

Join David Polkinghorne as he braves a maximum temperature of 11 in the capital. There are overcast conditions, and rain is a distinct possibility.
