Live: NSW Waratahs v Hurricanes

Join RugbyHeaven editor Stephen Samuelson as the Tahs aim to break their horror run in wet and wild Sydney.

POST GAME: What to say. The Tahs dominated possession, particularly in the second half, but either they didn't believe they could score or the Hurricanes adopted the famous phrase from General Robert Nivelle at the Battle of Verdun: "They shall not pass".

Whatever the reason, this is the first time the Tahs have lost six in a row and the first time they have racked up 10 losses in a season. The good news is they have four weeks off to lick their wounds with three international weekends followed by the bye.

80th min: And they have taken another one. TRY to Chris Eaton just seconds before the fulltime siren. That's a bonus point for the Canes and that's bad news for the Reds. The conversion is missed. FULLTIME: WARATAHS 12 HURRICANES 33.

79th min: The crowd tonight is just over 13,000 as the Tahs's attacking endeavour is going to go unrewarded tonight. They lack the attacking edge to kill off opponents and the Canes have taken their chances.

74th min: The Waratahs again rolling through the phases but where is the cutting edge? There it is. Bernard Foley slices them open but is brought down 10 metres out. He is tackled and gets up again. Bryce Lawrence does not miss it and penalises him.

68th min: TRY! Conrad Smith strolls over. The pressure was too much for the Tahs. Barnes hopelessly outnumbered tried for the intercept but to no avail. But really, the Canes should have been no where near the tryline to take that opportunity. Conversion kicked. WARATAHS 12 HURRICANES 28.

67th min: Disgraceful decision by Bryce Lawrence. Who would have thought those words would go together? Conrad Smith goes up for a high ball. The ball is clearly knocked on but not according to Bryce and eventually a scrum is packed down in the Tahs quarter with a Canes' feed. Lawrence has not reffed a game in South Africa this year and if he keeps this up he won't be doing too many more in Australia.

66th min: This match sums up the Tahs's season. Plenty of opportunities, not enough points.

64th min: TRY! Costly mistake by the Tahs. It's the human wrecking ball Motu Matu'u who crashes over after just coming on the field. But he would not have scored withouth the grubber and chase by Conrad Smith, the superb flick pass by Andre Taylor and a nice offload by Beauden Barrett. The conversion is missed. WARATAHS 12 HURRICANES 21.

62nd min: The Waratah players are imploring Bryce Lawrence to ping the canes for offside play, but Lawrence has lost his whistle - during the first half of the world cup quarter-final I believe. The Tahs are now in the attacking quarter which means a knock on is due. I was wrong, it was a turnover. They hoof it down field and Barnes collects it and under pressure boots out on the full.

58th min: The Tahs are running through the phases, 10 in all, but the knock-on comes while in the attacking quarter. The Waratahs are going to have to score a try to win this game. But can they?

55th min: John Ulugia is on and it is Kepu who is off. These conditions are making it tough for Pretorius, it does not suit his sniping game. The Tahs trying to run it out of their half, but Foley is isolated and is pinged for holding the ball. Predictably, Barrett steps up for the shot at three points. What post will he hit this time? None, it sails straight through. WARATAHS 12 HURRICANES 16. McKibben on for Pretorius.

50th min: The Tahs on the attack but the vigorous hurricanes defence forces a knock-on from the collision with Dave Dennis. Sitaleki Timani is off. Not sure what is wrong, if anything. Wycliff Palu is having a whale of a game as is his opposite number Victor Vito

47th min: Kane Douglas spoils an attacking raid and Dave Dennis counter attacks. The backs spread it and only a Hurricanes hand stops Bernard Foley from flying up field. There is a scrum for the knock-on. A free-kick follows and Palu busts them open, he passes to Kepu who drops a sitter. Try opportunity blown.

43rd min: The Tahs start the half with more vigour with Polota-Nau and Palu bulldozing towards the tryline, before the seemingly inevitable knock-on just a metre out. The Canes return the favour while counter-attacking and the Tahs get an ensuing penalty. Barnes makes no mistake. WARATAHS 12 HURRICANES 13.

Georgina Robinson at Allianz Stadium: The wet conditions might have kept a lid on the points but they've also saved the Waratahs more than once so far, most recently a minute before the bell when the Hurricanes lost the ball just as they looked to be running clear of Waratahs defenders. NSW look off. Their maul, traditionally a point of pride, was driven back metres by the visitors on two occasions at least and the backline hasn't got going. Not surprising considering the moisture but the Hurricanes managed to spread it wide even if they scored from it just once. In comparison the first we saw of centre Adam Ashley-Cooper was in his halftime interview. Drew Mitchell looks better this week but crikey it's scary any time he sits on the turf for more than 20 seconds, or touches anything below his knees. Halfback Sarel Pretorius's passing almost certainly cost his side five points halfway through the half but they eked out three points from a penalty. The Hurricanes scored in the 34th minute and the rain started. Not a good omen for Michael Foley and his men.

Halftime: The Hurricanes head into the sheds with a four-point lead. Tries are a premium in this match with Tahs unable to make too much of a dent in the Canes defensive line. They are going to have to because I suspect penalty goals alone will not win this game.

39th min: The Tahs are losing he forward battle at the moment. Is this the difference between a team that has something to play for and one that does not or is it a question of confidence? Jono Jenkins makes a desperate tackle as Barrett and Savea conspire to send Conrad Smith away, but the All Blacks centre drops the ball.

36th min: The entertainment is in full throttle tonight. Some aimless kicking and scrum resets.

33rd min: TRY! Julian Savea crosses in the corner. There was an horrendous error by Barnes whose pass to Timani goes asay and Foley could not clean up. The Tahs scrambe for a while but they run out of numbers. Barrett converts from the sideline. WARATAHS 9 HURRICANES 13.

30th min: Barnes makes a halfbreak and offloads to Pretorius. Bryce Lawrence plays the advantage and wards the Waratahs a penalty and Barnes does the job. WARATAHS 9 HURRICANES 6.

27th min: The Canes keep kicking for the in-goal area but to little effect. That's three times so far this match that an attacking kick has gone either dead or grounded in the in-goal area. From the restart the Tahs get the penalty for holding on at the breakdown. Attacking line out for Tahs.

24th min: The Canes grab the restart and are on the attack.

23rd min: The forwards pick and drive to within millimetres of the tryline but a poor pass from Pretorius sees a knock-on. There is a penalty however and Brnes does the job. WARATAHS 6 HURRICANES 6

20th min: Drew Mitchell makes a bust!

18th min: The Hurricanes make a bust but the ball is lost as Pretorius makes the tackle. A line out on halfway ensues after a kicking dual but Victor Vito steals the ball from Polota-Nau's throw.

15th min: Bryce Lawrence awards the penalty to the Canes and Beauden Barrett does the rest, with some help from the upright. WARATAHS 3 HURRICANES 6. Don't think there will be a four-try bonus point in this game.

14th min: Victor Vito's big hit forces a changeover and the Canes have the ball, but the kick is poor and Bernard Foley watches the ball go dead. Scrum 30 metres out from Tahs line.

9th min: The Hurricanes make a mistake as TJ Perenara slips before kicking and Tom Kingston claims the ball on halfway. The Tahs go through the phases before Dave Dennis knocks on but Bryce Lawrence blows the whiste for a penalty. Barnes slots over the three points. WARATAHS 3 HURRICANES 3

6th min: Sarel Pretorius pinged for hands in the ruck and Beauden Barrett steps up for the shot at goal. and it hits the crossbar and goes over. WARATAHS 0 HURRICANES 3

5th min: Poor kick No.3. This one is out on the full. Must be the coach's fault.

4th min: Another poor kick by Berrick Barnes nearly creates more troubles for the Waratahs as TJ Perenara swoops on the short kick and counter-attacks. A knock-on near halfway saves the Tahs. The Canes are going to run it from everywhere.

2nd min: It didn't take too long for the first aimless kick of the night by the Waratahs. The Hurricanes counter attack and Julian Savea nearly creates a try-scoring opportunity. The Canes are stopped 30 metres out before a much better kick by the Tahs finds touch in Hurricanes territory.

Pre-game: The players are coming out on the field. The Hurricanes are in a huddle as Benn Robinson leads the the Waratahs out on the field. They are also in a huddle ... I'm guessing they're not talking about a bonus-point loss.

PREVIEW

NSW Waratahs v Hurricanes at Allianz Stadium, Sydney 7.40pm
Head to Head: Played 17 Waratahs 10 Hurricanes 7
In Sydney: Played 8 Waratahs 6 Hurricanes 2
Last clash: Round 14 2010 - Waratahs 32 bt Hurricanes 16 at Allianz Stadium

NSW will be relieved to be back on home soil after a morale-sapping tour of South Africa, but it doesn't get much easier against the Hurricanes. The Wellington side thumped Melbourne last week, have a sniff of the playoffs and boast red-hot dangermen Julian Savea and Andre Taylor. The Waratahs' season is over, and with doubts over the future of coach Michael Foley, it could be a long final stretch for Super Rugby's underachievers. It remains to be seen how the Waratahs' Wallabies handle the unique scenario of playing just three days before possibly backing up for a Test match. They might have other things on their mind.

Tab Sportsbet: Waratahs $1.75 Hurricanes $2.00

  • The Waratahs are getting close to achieving their goal of having no one at the ground. Yes, I know it's wet, but that crowd is miniscule.
