That's all from our coverage from Suncorp Stadium. Check out Rugby Heaven and brisbanetimes.com.au in the morning and I'll have all the reaction from the coaches and players after a rather odd evening at Suncorp Stadium, in which the Reds fell over the line against the Hurricanes.

Conrad Smith says "that was one of the strangest games I've ever played."

    We hear you Conrad.

Meanwhile, James Slipper is talking like a man who just won his appeal on death row.

"We played in our own half and against a quality side like the Hurricanes, you can't do that. But our defence was phenomenal."

They've done it. Reds win 18-12 as Cooper dinks it into touch. I have no idea how they escaped with that one. Don't bother ordering the DVD box set. It was full of mistakes and Steve Walsh blew 24 penalties. But the Reds make it two straight - they win tonight.

Penalty Hurricanes. They find touch through Barrett 10m out and another chance to score. Just over a minute to go and a converted try wins the game. MASSIVE moment here. They lose it! But Liam Gill loses it right away! Tried to kick it instead of divin on it. Horror night for the Reds! Now a penalty to the Canes - and now they drop it! WHAT THE HELL IS HAPPENING.

Can Cooper find touch here? Reds win the scrum and they opt from Nick Frisbee, who ironically doesn't find touch either. But they get a penalty and boy oh boy oh boy did they need that. A bronx cheer as Cooper manages to boot it over the white line. Four minutes to play and the Reds need to get this from the 40m line down the other end of the park. But they lose it. Nightmare stuff from the Reds. Are they trying to lose?

Great move from the Canes off the scrum and Savea's chip ahead is cleared by a desperate Frisby! Great cover and great attack as the Canes look for their first try. The Reds under immense pressure and something has to crack. Have the Canes scored? A huge mistake from the Reds in front of their posts. But they will get away with it - Smylie knocked it on. NO TRY. Reds lead 18-12 with five to play.

This scrum taking an eternity as Radike Samo gets ready to take the field for the Reds. The Hurricanes bench has made a big impact so Samo needs to come up with something. Short arm penalty to the Reds is changed to a full penalty after a push and shove and Cooper can't put it out. Mistake after mistake from the home side. Samo on, Ed Quirk takes a seat. Reds lead 18-12 with nine minutes remaining.

Numbers for the Canes.... and they drop it out on the left! It was Andre Taylor who tried to flick it on and coughed up the ball. The Reds backed their tryline defence there and raced up to cut off that move. Reds clinging to life and they must clear this ball down the park.

Nice kick from the Hurricanes and Nick Frisby is forced to cart it into touch just a few metres out from his line. And is it a try? No! Touchies flag goes up! The Canes are gutted. They wanted a second look but no dice. And more pressure on the Reds - their 12th error. That throw wasn't straight. Reds lead 18-12 and they are in massive danger here.

Hello folks - back on deck, touch wood. In the meantime, this game has gone off the rails. Both sides all over the shop and it's starting to loosen up, like Frans Botha in the 10th round. Good grab there from Liam Gill and he wins his side a relieving penalty. He's having a ripper of a start to the year the Reds openside. It's 18-12 to the Reds with 15 minutes to play.

62 min: Chance to hit back for the Hurricanes via a penalty goal, but the kick hits the posts for the second time tonight.

Phil has computer issues, so we are babysitting from Sydney until he's back on line. Since half-time Rob Simmons has scored a try, which was converted by Quade Cooper. Reds lead 18-9.

The Hurricanes win the scrum but make a complete meal of things. Cooper chases hard and Barrett and Bateman run right into each other. All that was missing was the Benny Hill music. Reds lead 11-9 at halftime but Steve Walsh is just in front with 13 penalties.

The Hurricanes had the penalty but the advantage has now been lost. They are in good shape here though and keep hammering away at the Reds line from 15 or so metres out. They're happy to bash it forward now and might be looking to get a penalty. But they turn it over.... and the Reds do the same. Very, very scrappy stuff from both sides. Now a five metre scrum for the Canes on the stroke of halftime. Stay tuned....

Reds get a scrum feed 30m out from the Hurricanes line but this is a mistake fest. Canes have kicked it out on the full from outside the 22 twice in a row, while Ed O'Donaghue threw in a nice falcon as well when the pass went off the head. Now the Canes break away! Savea away and Perenara's kick just goes dead. Reds survive to lead 11-9 with five minutes left in the half.

Annnnnnnnnother penalty. Illegal entry. I'm losing count here. Too far out for Cooper to load up so the Reds find touch and throw the long line out to Liam Gill. But they lose it on the very first possession, the Canes kick it away, and now it's gone back for a Canes scrum about 15m out from their line. Reds lead 11-9. Big push from Qld but a penalty to the visitors. Steve Walsh, take a bow. Slipper the man at fault.

Good push here from the Canes. They're trucking it up right in front of the posts but turn it over and Lucas with the clearance under pressure. Good defence from the Reds and they buy themselves 30 metres. The Canes couldn't quite get the backline fanned out on that last raid. Let's see how they reload. Nope - scrum to the Reds. Wonky throw from Dane Coles. Reds lead 11-9.

Cooper can't add the extras from right on the sideline so the Reds remain in front 11-9. That's Ioane's first try since round 10 last year, can you believe.

Good pressure from the Reds and there's the TRY to Digby Ioane. He breaks a long, long drought. It's gone to the TMO and there's the green light. Nice work from Ben Lucas up the short side and the Reds lead 11-9 with a kick to come.

Another penalty. Canes right in front and surely Barrett makes this one. Steve Walsh has the whistle on overdrive this evening. Let it flow, Steve. Let it flow. Barrett hits this one more truly and the Hurricanes lead 9-6.

Barrett misses again, this time from a trickier angle. It hits the post and the Reds drop it out from the 22 with a very average kick from Cooper. The game not exactly reaching great heights at this point. It's 6-6 after 20 minutes.

Cooper puts Tapuai threw the gap but he's pulled down. Cooper has thrown about three forward passes here and Walsh has been in a position to call it every time. He's riding his luck thus far, Cooper. F'Sautia barreled into touch - Julian Savea more than up to that contest. Queensland a little ragged in attack so far but McKenzie will have them sticking to a plan. Savea chasing the kick.... but Shipperley takes the catch. Now a Canes penalty. Good pressure from the New Zealanders.

Nice little banana kick from Cooper to Ioane and he nearly got to the ball. It was skirting the sideline and Ioane was in space but it just went an inch too far. Now Cooper in strife for holding back Tim Bateman as the Reds turn it over. Saia Faingaa also the culprit. Barrett again.... misses for the first time this season. Score remains 6-6.

We're into the ninth minute mark and the Hurricanes are yet to touch the ball, until now. They get the turnover and Walsh has his hand out again. Penalty given right in front. Ben Tapuai was offside and Beauden Barrett won't miss from here. It's 6-6.

Another penalty. That's six in seven minutes. Cooper will have a ping from right in front. He makes no mistake and the Reds lead 6-3.

That's the fourth penalty in five minutes. Could be a long night. The Hurricanes pinged twice in succession for breakdown infringements. The Reds retaining ball pretty well and they get a good chance to attack here.

And now a penalty for the Reds in kicking range. No Mike Harris in the starting side so Cooper will take the shot. Great start from referee Steve Walsh. Wowsers. We're three minutes and 30 seconds into the game and it's already 3-3.

Away we go and Dom Shipperley takes the kick-off and motors back into a pack of white jumpers. And an early penalty for the Hurricanes as Quade Cooper caught with the pill. The Canes tee up a shot from right in front and Beauden Barrett makes no mistake. It's 3-0 to the Canes after just two minutes.

Teams about to make their way out onto the field here. No James Horwill still for the Reds and the mail is he might be a few weeks away yet. Awful luck for the big lock, with a training accident the culprit this time. Any wins the Reds can get in the bank before he and Genia return are going to be very handy. Ben Lucas has done a decent job in the nine thus far and Ed O'Donaghue keeps his place in the starting side.

A decent crowd building here despite the miserable weather that's been around. It's a bit of a shame given both of these sides love to throw the ball around. The Waratahs about to beat the Rebels as I type this entry so they get on the board after a loss up here last week. Beale scores at the death to get Melbourne a bonus point but the Tahs get up 31-26.

Good evening folks. I'm at Suncorp Stadium for Reds-Hurricanes. The showers about this afternoon look to have eased, although it's still going to get a little slippery out there. The Reds slight favourites at home after their win against the Waratahs. But let's see what Jeremy Thrush has to say about that.
