I am 61 and a single parent. I have been unemployed for three years until recently. I had to cash in my modest super and had to sell my house to pay off debts and I now rent in order to afford the expense of caring for my children. They have now all left home.
I recently got a job that pays very low hourly rates. I am worried about what will happen after I reach 65. My total assets are cash of $4000 and my household furniture. Would I qualify for the pension at 65?
Based on the information you have provided you would certainly qualify for an aged pension at 65 and probably rent assistance too.
However,I recommend you speak to the financial information people at Centrelink as soon as possible – you may well qualify for some benefits now.
