A letter from one of the Prime Minister's staff will have cost less than one cent for the paper and envelope.
In response to a question-on-notice in Parliament from Opposition Senate leader Eric Abetz, the Government has revealed the Prime Minister's letters are printed on Stephen Swiss White 115gsm A4 paper and matching DL envelopes.
A 500 sheet ream of the paper costs $32.87 or $26.40 if bulk orders are placed.
The envelopes cost $76.50 for a box of 500.
Ms Gillard's staff use standard white paper and white envelopes. The paper costs $6.50 per ream and the envelopes are ordered in batches of 5,000 at a cost of $748.
Government Senate leader Chris Evans said occasionally additional letterhead was purchased for the Prime Minister and her office. This occurred in 2010 and cost $8,189.
"The total cost, however, of producing letterhead for the Prime Minister and her office in any given period cannot be identified as stationery used for electronic letterhead is order in bulk, sometimes for several portfolio ministers, and then used over an extended period,'' Senator Evans wrote.
